Michael Caines RestaurantMichael Caines RestaurantMichael Caines RestaurantMichael Caines RestaurantABode Canterbury is a stylish boutique hotel that has

been beautifully designed and refurbished, maintaining the old wooden beams and traditional fabric of an ancient and historic building. The Michael Caines Restaurant is the stunning centerpiece of ABode

Canterbury’s food and beverage operations seating up to 70 covers and offers the ultimate dining experience, with delicious modern European cuisine accompanied

by an exceptional wine list, served with professional yet not too formal style. The restaurant combines classic

elegance with modern style and features a glass-fronted Wine Room, private Chef's Table in the kitchen area, and adjoining Champagne and Cocktail

Bar, it is a truly fabulous addition to the Canterbury dining scene and is the ideal place for private parties,

private dining and meetings, and all special occasions, whether for business or pleasure.

Amazing Graze LunchMichael Caines has pioneered a 'grazing' concept for

lunch, a changing seasonal menu that offers smaller portions of our à la carte dishes, presented and served

with the same Michael Caines style. This 'amazing graze' lunch gives a real taste of our high quality cuisine at an excellent value price. Moreover, we

respect the busy demands on your time and guarantee to serve you lunch within one hour.

Tasting Menu with WinesSeasonally, Executive Chef Jean Marc Zanetti devises

a special 7-course tasting menu that includes both dishes from the a la carte as well as special seasonal

creations. This is a finely balanced, carefully crafted menu that demonstrates the Michael Caines style of

cooking most wonderfully.

Early DiningOne of the most accessible ways to enjoy and

experience Michael Caines at ABode Canterbury is to come along from 6-7pm to enjoy our special Early Dining menu, a 2- or 3-course menu that changes

weekly. This is probably the best dining deal in the city!

The Michael Caines Wine RoomOne of the most striking features in our Michael Caines

Restaurant dining room is the modern, temperature-controlled Wine Room. This is at once a beautiful

space to display wines from our carefully selected list, as well as a practical working room where our trained

sommelier can ensure the proper service of wine.

8 Restaurant Guide 2012

Overlooking the beautiful sands of Minnis Bay in Birchington you will find the wonderful Minnis Bar & Restaurant offering one of the finest dining experiences in Thanet. It’s a great place to escape to and is the perfect location for a celebration, romantic meal, or simply a treat. Service is of great importance to us and you will find friendly staff, passionate about the products that we offer.

The restaurant is modern and stylish with the most amazing views through the wall of glass that runs the entire length, whether it be the beautiful sunsets, once painted by Turner or the majestic rolling waves, crashing over the promenade in winter, it proves to be a wonderful spot to watch mother nature in all her glory.

The chefs are well known for their passion when it comes to the food and creating mouth-watering dishes. They cure, pickle, brine, salt and smoke their own produce and the enthusiasm for this shines through in the flavours. They offer Kentish Salamis, Salt Beef, Pastrami, Sweet Cured Pork Loin, Corned Beef and even their own homemade Sausages, such as Chorizo, Venison and their version of the classic French Toulouse.

Fresh fish is delivered daily by Chapman’s of Sevenoaks who collect directly from the fishing boats. Beautiful pure bred Aylesbury Ducks come from Laughton’s Ducklings near Faversham, fresh free range Chickens and Eggs, Veal, Lamb & Pork all come from Monkshill Farm at Waterham, the Beef used here is bred less than five miles away on the Quex Estate, and the most recent supplier to join their list is the Cheesemakers of Canterbury at the Goods Shed, supplying fine Kentish

Cheeses. We try and source as many products locally as possible. There is an a la carte menu as well as a bar menu. In the winter they also offer a great value house menu priced at £12 for two courses and £18 for three courses.

In the summer months you can dine out on the patio or surrounding grass areas on the picnic tables, or even order something to take down to the beach. We also have a Kiosk by the seaside offering Ice Cream and Lollies, Cold Drinks, Beach Goods and of course Fresh Seafood, including, Cockles, Mussels, Jellied Eels, Whelks, Prawns and many other seaside favourites.

So from humble to extravagant ingredients, The Minnis Bar & Restaurant truly showcases the natural flavours of the Garden of England.

Eastwell ManorEastwell ManorEastwell ManorEastwell ManorQuality without compromise, peaceful seclusion – that is the Eastwell Manor experience. Eastwell Manor is a private, family owned hotel with its origins dating back

to the Norman Conquest.

Executive Head Chef, Carl Smith is passionate about food and how it is sourced. His menus change

according to the seasons and as much as possible is obtained from local producers.

As the days become shorter and the nights chillier, the Duo of Beef with a Root Gratin and Celeriac Puree with

Red Wine Jus and Aubergine Caviar should help to keep out the cold. The fillet and blade of beef used in this dish comes from Kent as do the root vegetables.

Venison and other game such as pheasant are used from the Eastwell Estate when in season and it is

always an advantage for the chef and the customer to know the origins of what they are eating.

Starters from the A la Carte menu now include Osetra Caviar which is farmed and sustainable and farmed

Colchester oysters. Native oysters are also used when available from Whitstable and Hythe.

Room for dessert? Perfect for Autumn is the Warm Tatin of Pear with Clotted Cream and Citrus Dressing or the Warm Chocolate Fondant with Dark Chocolate

Sorbet just to name two of the mouth watering puddings on offer.

The Manor Restaurant offers a Table d’Hote Lunch from Monday to Saturday at £15.50 for two courses

and £20.00 for three courses with a varied and

changing seasonal menu. The Table d’Hote Dinner is available seven days a week at £26.50 and the

traditional Sunday Lunch is £19.95.

The wine list is extensive and the Manor Bar offers an excellent range of cocktails and spirits including an

impressive collection of whiskies.

Janus Olason, the Restaurant Manager and his dedicated team look forward to welcoming you to the

restaurant very soon.

10 Restaurant Guide 2012

Since its launch in May 2009, Restaurant 54’s reputation for producing excellent freshly cooked meals has started to reach beyond the boundaries of Kent. Now established as a firm favourite in Broadstairs and the surrounding area, not just for the consistent quality of the food on offer, but for the welcome you receive and the attention to detail on display during service.

Here it’s about the whole experience. Crisp white linen and elegant, understated décor with a welcoming ambience that is both friendly and inviting. The atmosphere is formal, but relaxed. It is not uncommon to hear waves of laughter throughout the dining room.

Using fresh local seasonal ingredients, Head Chef Joe Silk is constantly tinkering with the menu, which changes on a regular basis without losing sight of customer favourites. Conveniently located in the centre of this pretty town just a short walk to the seafront.

Restaurant 54 offers an extensive menu with a fine selection of seasonal meat and seafood, alongside a good-quality, good value wine list. To greet you is homemade Olive bread, or Sun Dried Tomato bread. There is a modern twist on classic dishes, Vegetarian Scotch Egg as a starter, with homemade warm Piccalilli is particularly delightful, or a mixed Fish Plate with Cajun Spiced Prawn, Smoked Salmon, fresh white Crab Meat, accompanied by Lime & Herb Mayonnaise.

For the main course 54’s menu is divided between five Meat, five Fish and one vegetarian option. Roast Tenderloin of Pork with Bacon Mash, Hot Chilli Pickled Cabbage & Cider Apple Liquor is a real treat. The Pan Fried Fillet of Sea bass with Roast Aubergine & Chorizo

Confit, Baby Potatoes & Chive Sauce is another favourite. Or why not try their extremely popular, cracking posh Fish & Chips with Tiger Prawn, Monkfish, Plaice Fillet & Scallop cooked in Lemon & Coriander Batter with Minted Crushed Peas & Thrice Cooked Chips, simply divine! You can then luxuriate over the choice of desserts, Sharp Lemon Tart with sticky Strawberries & Marmalade Ice Cream, a Hot Apple & Cinnamon Charlotte with Lemon Meringue Ice Cream & Raspberry Puree. The homemade Ice Creams are amazing.

54 are clearly passionate about their food. It is highly popular with locals and visitors alike. The front page of the menu quotes George Bernard Shaw’s aphorism, “There is no love sincerer than the love of food”. Quite right too!

Richard Phillips’ first restaurant, Thackeray’s in Tunbridge Wells, is well known as one of the best

restaurants in Kent. In the ten years since it has been under Richard’s leadership Thackeray’s has won

numerous accolades including on three occasions a Michelin star, three AA rosettes and ‘Best Gourmet

Restaurant’ in the Kent Restaurant Awards in 2009.

HengistIn 2004, Richard took ownership of Hengist in Aylesford,

near Maidstone. The building is packed with almost as much history as Aylesford itself, which is one of the oldest towns in Britain. Dating back to the 1560’s,

Hengist takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon king of Kent, Hengist circa 449 AD. The restaurant offers a

modern French menu coupled with Richard’s passion for style and sophistication. He has created in the Hengist,

an elegant and intimate dining experience.

Richard Phillips at Chapel DownWorking together with England’s leading wine producer,

Chapel Down vineyard, delivering a restaurant in the Heart of the English countryside was an irresistible

combination for Richard. In 2008, he transformed the site into an outstanding restaurant full of character and

style, designed to reflect a modern English menu. With a strong emphasis on sourcing food locally, Richard

Phillips at Chapel Down has already received three AA rosettes and been voted ‘Kent English Restaurant of the

Year 2009’. Charming but with a modern touch of eclectic style, Richard Phillips at Chapel Down is fast

becoming one of Kent’s leading restaurants.

Pearson’s Arms by Richard PhillipsWith Richard’s knowledge and understanding of the

growing sophistication of Kent diners, he opened his first pub/restaurant in December 2010 offering customers

the finest beers to match a menu that reflected the coastal location. Sited on the beach at Whitstable,

Pearson’s Arms by Richard Phillips offers simple, but great tasting British food, sourcing ingredients from the

best of Kent’s countryside and sea. The pub is the perfect complement to his group of restaurants.

In 1992, two childhood friends, Esposito Tammaro and Vincenzo Esposito, left their hometown of Naples to seek their fortune in England. They were driven by their strong passion for Italian food and fresh ingredients and by 1994 they opened their first restaurant, Osteria Posillipo Pizzeria Broadstairs.

With little money left to buy professional equipment or fancy décor they focused on what was really important, the quality of food.

That is why our menu boasts a combination of fresh seafood, rustic pasta dishes and gourmet pizzas cooked in our handmade Neopolitan pizza oven.

We want authenticity and choose to import most of our ingredients directly from Italy. To ensure we offer you the finest quality, all our seafood and meats are sourced locally and are prepared on site by our experienced team of chefs.

Posillipo in Broadstairs has gone from strength to strength since it's opening in 1994 and is a very popular little corner of Italy in Broadstairs! It was voted the 4th best Italian restaurant in the country by Antonio Carluccio. With it's function room, outdoor dining area, and all weather balcony, Broadstairs Posillipo has lots to offer everyone.

Posillipo in Canterbury, adjacent to the Kings School, is fast becoming well known amongst locals and tourists alike and is a popular choice for theatre goers, being situated very near the Marlowe Theatre.

Osteria Posillipo Faversham is the newest addition to

the Posillipo family. It is situated in the creek side development of Provender Mill and offers a small piece of Naples within the river banks of Faversham.

The OrangeryThe OrangeryThe OrangeryThe OrangeryWith stunning, polished marble floors, soaring 12 foot windows and a sea view balcony, we believe that The

Orangery restaurant is the finest dining venue in Thanet. Set beside Smiths Court Hotel, the bay

windows have a great view across the bandstand and Oval lawns, and out over the sea. Seated in the

restaurant, you can experience great cuisine while staring out over spectacular Turner sunsets.

Our chefs are committed to using fresh, local produce: our meat comes from the Butcher of Brogdale in

Faversham, where the pigs are fruit-fed; our vegetables are from Nash Farm in Margate; our eggs from

Canterbury; and our fish from a Margate boat or from the New Romney fish market. Even our ice cream,

when not made in house, is provided by Taywells. No wonder we are an approved member of Produced in Kent! Everything from our kitchen is handmade, and

our chefs specialise in transforming seasonal ingredients into delicious dishes, under the leadership

of Head Chef Daniel Johnson.

We run an à la carte menu alongside a set-price table d’hote every evening, and these menus are redesigned regularly in line with seasonality. The table d’hote menu

is also offered for lunch, alongside bar snacks and sandwiches. We offer our famous Sunday carvery from

12pm to 3pm every Sunday.

To give you an example of the range of dishes we offer, dishes we have served in 2011 include cannon of

lamb, cherry and brandy pancakes, apricot stuffed breast of guinea fowl, smoked salmon and green bean fusilli, pistachio crunch tart, coquilles St. Jacques, and

Located in the Garden of England just off the A28 between Ashford and Canterbury is the chocolate box village of Chilham, where you can find a real gem; the 600 year old Woolpack Inn is nestled at the bottom of the hill in the shadow of the Norman castle.

With its vast oak beams and inglenook fireplaces it offers a glimpse into hospitality of yesteryear. The inn is said to be haunted by the Grey lady, a friendly ghost who wanders the main building.

Visitors can choose to relax in the cosy bar, the restaurant with its glorious bay window and country lane views or the patio courtyard where they will find the ancient olive tree which has been in situ since the inn was built. Parking is not a problem with availability for 25 cars to the rear of the hotel and space enough to accommodate a coach.

The Inn boasts a home-cooked menu with many of the ingredients being sourced locally. Fish comes off the boat in the morning and often is on the plate by lunch service.

Local mushroom sautéed in garlic butter, finished with stilton and cream and presented on a garlic ciabatta, real home-made steak & Masterbrew Ale pie, and homemade strawberry shortcake give a hint of the homely fayre on offer.

22 Restaurant Guide 2012

BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

The Coastguard Pub & Restaurant isn’t hard to find.

Head for the sound of the waves lapping against the white cliffs of Dover, follow the delicious aroma of local produce cooking in a busy kitchen, search out the glint of freshly poured ale. When the English Channel is about to wet your toes, you’ll be there.

Admittedly, it’s a location hard to beat. A pub with its own beach and views across to France when the weather’s clear. Couples say it’s decidedly romantic; families say it’s great fun.

It’s true that when you get to us your mobile phone might think you’re already in France (it is only 23 miles away) but The Coastguard prides itself on being an entirely British-orientated seaside “home from home.”

We like to keep things simple. Our friendly, family-run establishment has a garden with bench seating for sunny days, a large alfresco terrace for year-round drinking and dining, a busy bar for cosy evenings, and a restaurant for relaxed dining.

Chef Sam Wydymus takes the finest local ingredients and crafts her menu according to the tides, the weather and the seasons. The menu changes twice daily depending upon the availability of local produce but our sample menu on our website should give you an idea of some of the things that may appear on your visit.

RGs at Rowhill GrangeRGs at Rowhill GrangeRGs at Rowhill GrangeRGs at Rowhill GrangeExecutive Chef, Luke Davies, who worked at the likes

of The Milestone, The Capital and with Novelli and Chervaux has marked a new era at Rowhill Grange

securing it amongst the great and good in Kent.

His ethos ‘Bucking a tired trend of fancy for fancy’s sake’ has paid off, as his menus brim with new ideas

that showcase good honest seasonally inspired dishes and the biggest authentication - guests keep coming

back for more.

Utilising associations such as Produced in Kent and ongoing committed research, priority is given to

provenance and sourcing the very best local produce from local suppliers all around Kent. ‘It is now

expected by our guests that every consideration has been given to supporting local and food origin,

therefore part of our daily process is devoted to delivering that’ comments Luke.

‘Most recently we have joined the Big Fish Fight supporting sustainable fishing practice and found a

fantastic new vegetable supplier, Fresher By Miles who grows his own vegetables allowing us to almost ‘hand pick from our own backyard’ he continued. ‘This also

keeps the talented kitchen team on the ball creating new menus with the produce and flavours each

season affords’.

The results speak for themselves with traditional favourites complimented by the introduction of modern

and imaginative cooking methods and stimulating combinations.  Alongside runs a succulent grill menu

featuring timeless classics such as Romney Marsh lamb, dry aged steaks and daily seafood catch

completing a delicious transformation and a dining concept that goes down a treat.

24 Restaurant Guide 2012

It's hard to put your finger on what makes Elvey Farm such an enchanting choice for supper. Perhaps it's because of its location. As you drive down the little, winding country lane, across open fields, you get a real sense of going back in time. As you pull into the medieval farmstead, it's impossible not to fall in love with the little cluster of Kentish buildings; the medieval Hall House, the sixteenth century barn, the Stable Block, Oast House and Granary. The restaurant is housed in the Tudor timber-framed barn. In the winter, a crackling fire will greet you in the bar. In summer, the sun shines in from the surrounding fields. All around, ancient beams and brickwork remind you that locals have been gathering here for centuries. One of the reasons so many people make Elvey Farm their regular haunt, is the service. It's friendly, efficient and attentive. It's clear the staff love working here; some of them have been here since the place opened in 2007 and you can't help but be swept along by their enthusiasm and commitment. The food here is sublime. Chef Tony Lemaitre is meticulous in picking out fresh, seasonal produce. Elvey Farm is a member of Produced in Kent and works hard to ensure the food is as fresh as it can be - and as local as possible. The chefs work alongside Kentish vineyards, farm shops, bakeries, butchers... to ensure the farm lives up to its motto: 'Kentish to the Core'. Favourites might include a Salad of Seared Pigeon Breast & Roasted Plums for a starter, followed by Aga-Cooked Venison & Chestnut Casserole with Dauphinoise Potatoes, and finished with a hearty slice of Gypsy Tart with clotted cream.

So why not take a trip out to Elvey Farm? Enjoy a glass of Biddenden Wine under the grapevine - or by the log fire... sample home-cooked fresh food with a Kentish twist; chat to locals and listen to their stories... And if you're not ready to go home, why not try one of their beautifully appointed guest rooms? There are 11 rooms in total, in the Stable Block, Oast House and Granary, all with contemporary, stylish bathrooms and packed with period features. One thing is guaranteed... by the end of your stay, you too will have fallen in love with Elvey Farm.

This collection of archetypal Kentish weather-boarded buildings, once a village inn, is now a delightful family-owned and run hotel and restaurant with a refreshingly independent approach to hotel-keeping. Sophisticated in style, with a fresh contemporary atmosphere it offers an authentic taste of English Coastal living and as the sister hotel of award-winning Wallett's Court Country House Hotel a short distance away, The White Cliffs comes with an excellent pedigree.

The buzzing and lively Bay Restaurant & Bar at the heart of the hotel, attracts locals and visitors from near and far who are drawn by the classic Kentish menu featuring locally inspired dishes prepared simply with a focus on the fabulous, fresh, abundant and natural produce from The Garden of England. On the menu you'll find Romney Marsh lamb, Kentish asparagus, St. Margaret's Bay lobster, Deal crab, fruit and vegetables from the hotel's own gardens and ingredients foraged from the coast and clifftop countryside.

Ashford's competitive gastronomic scene, the Cinnamon Spice is well known and has already

made a great name for itself. This has been achieved by providing a variety of hot and fresh mouth-watering dishes made using the finest quality

ingredients alongside a highly efficient, polite, prompt and courteous service. There are also special event

nights held regularly at the Cinnamon Spice such as the 'magicians night' an evening of magic and tricks performed live and the 'Elvis night' an evening of live

music. The magicians night has become anespecially popular event due to being children and family orientated as well as the great food sold at a

great price.

The Cinnamon Spice also plays a pivotal role in local community work and fundraising, as well charity work

for people in the third world. This philanthropic approach taken by Ash Miah 'Young Restaurateur of

the Year 2010' owner of the Cinnamon Spice has resulted in local people and the local media/press

heaping praises upon the restaurant. So do not delay, make your booking today, whether its an evening out

The Old Brewery Tavern may look back to historical antecedents, but it is wholly contemporary in design, outlook, approach and style. With its striking sliding glass windows that allow us to open to the sunshine whenever it may appear, and with its decking, beer garden with heated jumbrella and bright modern furnishings, the courtyard area of the Old Brewery Tavern is anything but 'old' in feel.

A comfortable, more discrete lounge area contrasts this, with its warm modern fireplace, while wooden tables and chairs in the central area retain the feel of traditional British pub.

At the Old Brewery Tavern, we pride ourselves on our menu of both daily specials as well as foods that range from salads and platters to more substantial main meals, especially locally sourced meats cooked on the char-grill. Our burgers are definitely the best in Canterbury!
