WELCOMEWelcome to our Summer concert; Songs of Power.
Although it has only been four years since we held our
first rehearsal in Southampton, I have been incredibly
proud of everything we have achieved in that time. We
have really grown into a family who rely on each other
and help each other out, both musically and in day
to day life.
Many of our singers had never performed to this level,
not to mention singing from memory with a world class
British orchestra. I know you will hear the hard work that
every single one of them has put into today’s concert
and see the smiles on their faces as we tackle our usual
broad range of music.
If you are interested in joining us then our next ‘Open
Evening’ rehearsal is on Wednesday 18th September
2019. Our Choir is open to everyone to come and join
our happy family so if you fancy coming along to have a
look and see what we’re all about, then please do come
and join us at Richard Taunton College in Southampton,
starting at 7.15pm. No pressure or commitment, but a
fun evening guaranteed!
Pete Harrison, Inspiration Southampton Music Director
About Gary…I have been singing for as long as I can remember. Wolverhampton Grammar School was my major musical influence – School Choir, Choral Society, Musical Theatre Group, Jazz Band – alongside the Youth Orchestra and the Concert Band.
When it came to University it had to be music, and so to York. Three wonderful years of music making also included being Chorus Master for York Light Opera and MD for Pickering Musical Society.
I then became a tenor in the Choir of York Minster with all that entails; daily services as well as many world tours, concerts and recordings. After 18 years , I left and became part of the creative team behind the formation of SingLive.
Now, with Inspiration as my sole focus, I really do have my dream job. Weekly rehearsals and trips around the country and abroad are a joy.
A VERY SPECIAL PLACE IN OUR HEARTS
The songs in this concert have a very special place in
the hearts of Inspiration. We are recreating the very
first Inspiration concert from 10 years ago, up north in
Leeds and Newcastle. In the four years since Inspiration
Southampton joined our singing family, they have
performed many of these iconic numbers, and under
the marvelous conducting of Pete, have developed
into the wonderful group of performers you are about
to hear.
We have a very loyal audience, thank you, and I hope
you will hear and feel the development that has
happened in those four years. Not only have they
grown in number but also in the quality of performance.
Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the show.

“Taking music beyond the concert hall
lies at the heart of the BSO’s commitment
to give back to the community”
The BSO remains at the forefront of the UK orchestral scene since its foundation in 1893. A cultural beacon, it serves communities across the South and South West and extends its influence across the whole of the UK and internationally with regular festival appearances, an extensive catalogue of recordings, numerous plays on Classic FM as the station’s Orchestra in the South of England and continued live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3.
Taking its lead from founder Sir Dan Godfrey, the BSO is one of the UK’s most dynamic and innovative symphony orchestras. He established a world class ensemble and during his tenure not only did the Orchestra work with such illustrious figures as Bartók, Sibelius, Holst, Stravinsky, Elgar and Vaughan Williams, Bournemouth was also the first orchestra to have performed all the Tchaikovsky symphonies in the UK and gave more premières than any other orchestra at the time. More recently composers who have worked with the BSO include Sir Michael Tippett, Sir John Tavener, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Rodion Shchedrin, David Matthews, James MacMillan and Mark Anthony Turnage.
Kirill Karabits is the BSO’s Chief Conductor. He continues the fine pedigree of esteemed past Principal Conductors including Sir Charles Groves, Constantin Silvestri, Rudolf Schwarz, Paavo Berglund, Andrew Litton, Yakov Kreizberg and Marin Alsop.
Taking music beyond the concert hall lies at the heart of the BSO’s commitment to giving back to the community. BSO musicians take part in an extensive portfolio of learning and community projects, from national curriculum based workshops in schools, through to tea dances for the elderly, performing alongside enthusiastic amateur players, pioneering work involving people living with dementia and 18 Music Education Hubs across the region. A brand new addition to the portfolio is the creation of a ground-breaking disabled-led ensemble which will soon be giving performances together with the full BSO. The BSO was also awarded the Alzheimer’s Society 2017 Dementia Friendly Organisation of the Year (Small and Medium).
