From chasing the endless summer sun through the South Pacifi c to theme parks and cuddly koalas across the ditch in Queensland. Sprinkle a dash of fairy dust and let the magic happen in Disneyland or go on a hunt to fi nd the real Simba on an Africa safari.

These are just some of our family favourites to get you dreaming. And remember to dream big… we know your little ones do!

W elcome to the dreamy South Pacific, where you’ll find dozens of serene islands nestled closely together, not

unlike diamonds in a crown. One of the shiniest

and most dazzling of these is Fiji, which is as

enticing to young children and families as it is to

loved-up honeymooners and retirees – essentially,

all are welcome on these beautiful islands.

WHERE TO STAY WITH YOUR LITTLE TOTSWhen it comes to booking your holiday

accommodation for you and the kids, we can’t

stress one thing enough: Look for kids’ clubs.

Fiji has some of the best in the South Pacific,

with plenty of deals to ensure your kids are not

only entertained on their travels, but aren’t racking

up a massive hotel bill to do so. Little ones aged

4-11 are generally included in these clubs,

with late night hours meaning you can sneak

away for some time off – and perhaps a cocktail

or two – in between child minding duties. Plenty

of Fijian resorts also allow your kids free dining

as part of their package.

ISLAND FAMILY FUNFamily-friendly accommodation options include

rooms big enough to take up to 2 kids under 12

years, special kids meal plans and a wealth of kids

activities to keep them more than occupied. Take

a look at Castaway Island Fiji, which was named

the best overseas family resort by Luxury Travel

Magazine, or check in to Treasure Island Resort

for a kids’ club complete with spa treatments

specifically for the kids. The three-tiered swimming

pool is also a real holiday treat.

Plantation Island Resort boasts an environment

so inviting that your family will struggle to leave.

Sign your sprogs up to the Coconut Kids Club for

free activities such as putt putt, fish feeding, weaving,

beach games, treasure hunts and talent quests.

MAINLAND PARADISEFor something trendy check out Radisson Resort Fiji

on Denarau Island, a stunning luxury beachfront

family resort. Its design screams relaxation, with

rooms nestled around lagoon swimming pools

and tropical gardens, and there’s even a special

toddlers’ pool in the shade for the tiniest swimmers

in your lot. The kids’ club here is called Pirate’s

Cove, offering supervised activities for those aged

between 4-12. Take some time off parenting and

enjoy all the resort’s lush amenities while your

offspring play on Fiji’s only 'white water tunnel'

slide, splash about in one of five lagoon pools

WHEN YOU’VE GOT YOUNG KIDS AND YOU’RE JETTING OFF ON HOLIDAY, THERE ARE TWO MAGIC WORDS THAT CAN MAKE ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE: KIDS’ CLUBS.

HAPPY FEETin Fiji’s kids’ clubs

ADVENTURE AWAITS in Vanuatu

I f your kids have fi nally reached the age where they can enjoy a little bit of rough and tumble with you on your family holiday, it’s time to take

them on their fi rst (of many, we hope) adventure

trip. So where’s your destination? None other than

the tropical oasis of Vanuatu.

Base yourselves on Efate Island, where you’ll

fi nd a number of resorts designed with kids in mind.

Many of these offer deals where the little ones play

and eat for free, making Vanuatu an impressively

affordable choice. Visit Port Vila and stop by the

local markets and stock up on fresh fruit and crafts.

Start by throwing on your togs and grabbing

some fl ippers and a snorkel and glide through

LIFE’S FULL OF FIRSTS. BE PART OF A MILESTONE IN YOUR CHILD'S LIFE – THEIR FIRST ADVENTURE HOLIDAY!

the marine sanctuary of Hideaway Island. You can

take scuba diving classes here too. Keep your eyes

peeled for vibrant coral and fi sh fl itting everywhere

you look.

If that’s not enough adrenalin for you, perhaps

the Vanuatu Jungle Zipline will do the trick.

The course features six different ziplines, suspension

bridges, a waterfall and breathtaking views across

the treetops – and kids of all ages can take part.

Next up you can horse ride at Club Hippique

Adventure Park, catering for beginners through

to advanced cowboys. Best of all, you can ride

through the rainforest, under a waterfall or along a

white sand beach at sunset. And last but defi nitely

far from the least, head to Mt Yasur for the most

spectacular fi reworks show you’ll ever see – and it’s

all natural! The volcano is one of the most active

in the world and is located on Tanna, a traditional

island that has an impressive cultural hub.

After all of this action you would have built up

a serious appetite – luckily this little paradise has a

buffet of different delicious cuisines. From French,

Mediterranean and Italian to Chinese and Thai – your

taste buds will be left as happy as your kids. Enjoy!

SUNSHINE & SERENITY in Rarotonga

There’s something quite magical about island life, where time seems to go a little slower and the people are just a touch

friendlier. Rarotonga embodies all that is great about holidaying in the South Pacific, from its laid back, casual vibe to its abundance of family-friendly activities.

Let’s start with its size, shall well? Rarotonga’s 32km circumference makes for easy transits, where walking and cycling are king and hire cars and buses are always available to help you out if your legs get tired. If you do rent a car, check out CocoTots for hiring car seats, along with cots and buggies – one less thing to lug to the airport!

While small in size, this island is big on families, which is why you’ll find interconnecting rooms and kids’ clubs in many of the resorts. Look to the Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa for one of the best kids’ club options in the South Pacific, complete with interactive educational experiences and of course, plenty of playtime. It’s open year-round and boasts free snacks and drinks along with movie nights. Other clubs can be found at the likes of The Edgewater Resort & Spa, where the kids can create island style costumes, decorate coconuts and hunt down crabs, just to name a few. And the Pacific Resort Rarotonga will keep their faces beaming with beach activities on Muri Beach.

OUT AND ABOUTExplore the island with 4WD safari tours or lagoon

cruises, or engage the crew in some good old

fashioned mini putt. Be taken back by Raro’s

cultural nights, either beach front at Te Vara Nui

Village or up in the hills at Highland Paradise,

where you’ll learn about the island’s heritage,

be entertained by music, dance and drumming

while chowing down traditional food.

Of course, there’s no shortage of picture-perfect

beaches to discover here, so you’re more than

LOOKING TO SLIP INTO A STATE OF TOTAL BLISS? RAROTONGA IS WAITING TO WOO YOU, WITH KIDS IN TOW.

welcome to spend your days lazing by the lagoon.

The School Holidays are the peak times for

travel to Rarotonga and travel packages to this

stunning part of the world get snapped up quickly.

So don’t beat around the bush – paradise is waiting.

Keen for some R&R in Rarotonga? Give us a call on 0800 838 747, visit houseoftravel.co.nz or come instore today.

Forever YoungESCAPING TO A DISNEY PARK IS ESCAPING TO A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN FEEL LIKE A KID AGAIN. A PLACE WHERE YOU’LL GET CAUGHT UP IN THE

MAGIC AS MUCH AS YOUR LITTLE ONES.

E nchanting. Magical. Mesmerising. Just three of the words that are inextricably linked with the sheer delight that is Disney. Indulge in a

whimsical holiday when you venture to Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort or Florida’s Walt Disney World

Resort, or make your mark at both… a Disney extravaganza!

DISNEYLAND RESORT, ANAHEIMSouthern California is an ideal place for a family holiday, and the Anaheim location of Disneyland Resort places you perfectly to explore this area when you’re not hunting out thrills and spills at the Theme Parks. The original Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park can each be explored over the course of a day, or fit them both in to an indulgent weekend of fun in the sun (note: we cannot promise good weather but who cares – you’re in Disneyland!).

Disneyland Resort consists of the two Theme Parks plus three Disney Hotels and Downtown Disney District, a district that features dining, shopping and evening entertainment. And in terms of rides, it’s safe to say you’ll be well catered-to. Let adrenalin take over on California Screamin’, a rollercoaster that takes you up almost 36 metres high before plunging down at top speeds and

diving into a 360-degree loop-de-loop. If that sounds like it’s all a bit much for your delicate nerves, keep things cool on water with Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes, where you paddle your way to relaxation.

Also, this year is a biggie for Disneyland as they celebrate their 60th birthday, the Diamond Celebration! If you can, time your trip to coincide with the festivities that will kick off mid-May. You’re promised to be part of something truly spectacular.

WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT, FLORIDAWhile Disneyland Resort in California can be explored in a short period of time, Walt Disney World in Florida is the kind of place where you need a fair few days up your sleeve to really make the most of the experience. Five days is the recommended stay, but for those with curious kids (or perhaps parents who want to live out their childhood dreams) it may be worth putting aside a week or more.

Spanning more than 100 square kilometres, this fun-filled destination is bigger than Manhattan and boasts four Theme Parks, ESPN Wide World

of Sports Complex, two Water Parks, Downtown Disney Area and a whopping 26 accommodation options, catering to all budgets. Such is the size

of Walt Disney World Resort, the different Theme

Park entrances are miles apart and you’ll need

to commute for 10-30 minutes to get between

them. But when you stay at an on-site Disney

property you’ll have access to the resort’s

transport, meaning you can get from park

to park with ease.

Start at Magic Kingdom Park, where you’ll

fall in love with the Cinderella Castle, take a ride

on Dumbo the Flying Elephant and head down

the famous log flume ride at Splash Mountain.

If you want to sneak in a wee bit of education

take a trip to Epcot, where you can watch a short

film on the beauty of France at Palais du Cinema,

or pass the time at Future World where you’ll be

engulfed in a world of space-themed activities.

Disney ’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park contrasts

beautifully with the hustle and bustle of the

resort’s rides, providing families with the chance

to embark on a privately guided VIP expedition

though the native habitats of various exotic

African wildlife, such as hippos and crocodiles.

Want to live happily ever? To find out more give us a call on 0800 838 747, visit houseoftravel.co.nz or come instore today.

MONKEYING AROUND IN BALI & PHUKETMASSAGES FOR YOU, ACTIVITIES ON TAP FOR THEM. THESE ASIAN GEMS HAVE GRACIOUSLY TRANSFORMED INTO

TOP-NOTCH, FAMILY-FRIENDLY HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS WHERE NO ONE WILL BE LEFT UNSATISFIED.

T here was once a time when the words 'Bali' and 'Phuket' were synonymous with 'party' and 'surf'. While these two elements

are still very much a part of the culture in these two special parts of the world, a new wave of holidaymaking has opened up. These days, you’re just as likely to see families traipsing down the beach as you are young travellers, such is the friendly and inviting nature of these Asian destinations.

WHERE TO SLUMBER One of the perks of a holiday in this corner of the globe is the affordable accommodation options. Many hotels in both Bali and Phuket offer seasonal discounts and bonus packages, where you receive free nights’ accommodation after staying for a

certain length of time. Inter-connecting rooms also keep families together while allowing everyone a bit of peace and quiet.

Bali and Phuket are family favourites for good reason, both offering resorts that cater for the clan. Like Bali Dynasty in South Kuta, which has fun bunk beds for the little ones and an on-site waterpark. And if Phuket is calling your name, Centara Karon Resort is a goodie, boasting a huge kids club, 3 pools and an E Zone, a separate space for teens.

EVERLASTING ENTERTAINMENT It’s not a case of what there is to do in Bali and Phuket, but rather a question of what can’t you do. You name it, they’ve got it – from kayaking and snorkelling in spectacularly serene coastal waters through to indulging in your Master Chef fantasies with a cooking

class that even lets the kids get in the mix.

Splash out with a Bali Hai boat trip, where you

board a luxury catamaran to cruise around Bali and

Nusa Lembongan before mooring at a pontoon

to embark on action-packed activities such as

banana boat rides and watersliding. Let the aquatic

adventures continue at Bali’s Waterbom Park,

where children can enjoy the slides and rides while

you sneak away for a massage and a bite to eat.

Speaking of massages, these are pretty easy

to come by in Bali and Phuket and are typically a

fraction of the price of what you’d pay back home.

Indulge in an hour-long foot massage in exchange

for a tenner (we’re serious) and then you’ll know what

affordable luxury truly feels like. Your mini-me can even

have her nails painted at the same time… cute!

Page 13: Inspire Family Holidays magazine Feb/Mar 15 - House of Travel

1 3INSPIRE // HOUSE OF TRAVEL

Like many Asian destinations, Bali and Phuket are enhanced by their cultural attractions. Immerse yourselves in the local history by visiting temples, such as Bali’s Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple, and don’t forget to add a trip to the Phuket Heroines Monument to teach the kids a thing or two while they holiday. Many resorts also offer cultural evenings where you can try your hand at traditional dancing and enjoy some local entertainment.

FEEDING THE KIDS AND YOUR BUDSIt’s no secret that the street food in Thailand is some

of the best in the world, and it’s cheaper than almost anything you can fi nd in New Zealand. Look for busy stalls with lots of locals for the best picks.

Alternatively, there are plenty of western-style food outlets throughout Bali and Phuket and convenience stores seemingly on every corner to help keep the troops fed and watered throughout your stay.

Take the kids to an exotic paradise. Give us a call on 0800 838 747, visit houseoftravel.co.nz or come instore today.

Drift away into holiday bliss SAIL OFF INTO FAMILY HOLIDAY PERFECTION. THESE FLOATING MASTERPIECES ARE EQUIPPED TO CATER TO EVERY

OCCASION (AND EVERY CHILD). TRUST US – THERE'S NOTHING THEY HAVEN'T THOUGHT OF ABOARD THESE BEAUTIES.

K ids love water. Kids love boats. Parents love relaxation. Put these three factors together and you’ve got the recipe for the perfect

concoction – a cruise. One of the best things

about cruising is that you can visit a range of

different destinations in the one holiday, without

the hassle of packing up your bags each time

and hopping on multiple forms of transport.

Your cruise ship is not only your transportation,

but also your accommodation and entertainment

provider. What more could you ask for?

Well yes, there is more. Factor in cost-effective

packages, specially designed kids’ programs

and some of the best food you’ll fi nd outside of

a Michelin restaurant (yes, there are kids’ options

if you’ve got fussy eaters on your hands!) and

you’re well on your way to cruising into happiness.

Australasia is blessed with an abundance of

family-friendly cruises, with companies such as

P&O Cruises and Royal Caribbean International

going above and beyond to put on a show for

you and your little ones. Opt for a 4-berth cabin,

family suite or interconnecting cabins to help keep

your brood comfortable while cruising, and know

your wallet’s being looked after thanks to your

accommodation, travel, meals and most activities

all included in the price of your ticket. Too easy.

"Age-specific kids’ clubs are included in your cruise fare, catering to everyone from tiny tots through to too-cool teens"

ALL ABOARD P&O CRUISES! P&O Cruises offer some pretty special options when it comes to family cruising. Let your children play the day away at the on-site kids’ clubs, which stay open late and provide an even later child minding service – perfect for those nights when you want to indulge in some wining, dining and dancing sans-kids. It’s not a one-size-fi ts-all option, either. Age-specifi c kids’ clubs are included in your cruise fare, catering to everyone from tiny tots through to too-cool teens. Anyone aged 12 months and older is welcome to come cruising with P&O, and no one has to feel left out.

With around 40 activities taking place every day designed specifi cally for children, there’s no reason for anyone to be bored while cruising. Take them on in a game of kids vs. parents laser tag or get together to watch a live circus, all from the comfort of your luxury vessel. Older kids can take part in the Broad Shorts Stop Motion Pro Filmmaking program, where participants make an animated short fi lm using top of the line technology.

When you’re all tuckered out after a day of fun

in the sun, settle in for a gourmet meal aboard your

ship. Plantation Restaurant on P&O Cruises offer

a kids-only dinner every night, while there are kids

menus and platters made for sharing available

at Waterfront Restaurant.

So where to next? Depart from Auckland

and make your way to some of the world’s most

delightful destinations, all without venturing too far

from home. P&O’s cruises can take you all around

Australia and the Pacifi c Islands, with stops in exotic

lands such as Noumea, Port Douglas, Rarotonga,

the Whitsundays and even some of New Zealand’s

most special places.

DISCOVER NEW HORIZONS WITH ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISESCruising with Royal Caribbean International was

always going to be a favourite with the kids, for

a number of reasons. Being able to conquer a

rock-climbing wall and showing off their inner Kelly

Slater on a 40-foot long surf simulator, are some

for starters. Learn how to salsa with professional dance instructors, tick off your shopping list in duty free, and when you’re ready to slow things down (without the kids by your side) treat yourself to a soothing hot stone massage.

Your cruise fare covers pretty much everything you could possibly want while you’re at sea, from tip-top (or should we say ship-shape?) accommodation through to attractions including rock climbing, surfi ng on a surf simulator, mini golf, ice skating and more.

My Family Time Dining is perfect for those parents who want a little time to themselves while sailing the seven seas. Kids aged 3-11 are served tasty meals and are collected by Adventure Ocean staff to allow parents the chance to have a breather and enjoy their meals in peace.

Royal Caribbean International offers cruises around California, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacifi c islands, from short sampler cruises of 3 nights to longer 16 night itineraries, with some of the most picturesque destinations right at your fi ngertips. Discover the history of Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, relax on the idyllic shores of Champagne Bay in Vanuatu and explore the untouched wilderness of Darwin when you cruise with this company, with the kids under one arm and a cocktail in the other. Could there be anything more perfect?

Shaka Mahalo!EXPECT A MASSIVE MAHALO (THANK YOU) FROM THE KIDS AFTER ESCAPING TO

THIS TROPICAL NIRVANA. KICK BACK AND GET READY TO RIDE THE HAWAIIAN WAVE.

T here would be few people who haven’t dreamed of a Hawaiian holiday at least once in their lives. So taking the kids here

is making a dream come true at an enviously

early age. And we can assure you it’s the perfect

distraction from your ever growing inbox back

home… because let’s be honest, it’s hard to be

stressed when you’re in one of the world’s most

beautiful places!

HAWAII’S HEART – OAHUThere's an abundance of drool-worthy

accommodation options in Oahu, and elsewhere

in Hawai'i, but one of the most family-friendly

slumbering options is a condo. Think of this as

your home away from home, complete with

separate living and bedroom areas, and kitchen

facilities in case you ever get sick of dining out

(this is not likely).

Get out and about and spend a day

snorkelling in Hanauma Bay, nestled inside a

volcanic crater with a marine environment quite

unlike anything else in the world. If your kids can

swim, they can snorkel, and they’ll love the fish,

turtles and other charming aquatic life.

So, what do pineapples and Oahu have in

common? The Dole Plantation. There’s plenty of juicy

fruit and even more attractions to explore with the

kids. Ride the Pineapple Express train and get lost

in the Pineapple Garden Maze.

Pearl Harbour is also a must-visit when you’re

in Oahu. After all, it’s never too early to teach your

kids a bit of history. And if you have any spare time,

wind down with a spot of shopping. Ala Moana

Centre should do the trick – it’s one of the largest

outdoor malls in all of America!

TAKE THE PLUNGE IN MAUIStart the Maui leg of your holiday with a splash at

the Maui Ocean Centre, where your clothes stay

dry but your imagination is well and truly based

underwater. Here you’ll find more than 60 exhibits,

housing water babies such as sharks, Hawai'i

sea turtles and stingrays.

Maui definitely has the beach bunnies

covered thanks to its many sandy shores with a

relaxed family-friendly atmosphere. The West and

South Maui beaches are perfect for little ones to

play in the shallows, while Kuau has a sheltered

cove for tiny tots to frolic in tide pools. Snorkel from

the beach or boat, or try your hand at paddle

boarding or surfing.

Head to the Pools of Oheo to discover

swimmable, waterfall-fed pools of utter tranquillity.

Catch some whale watching during the migration

period of December-May, or dry off with a zipline

through some of the island’s most stunning forest.

Trot down memory lane with a family horse

ride at Piiholo Ranch in Makawao, where you can

peel back the history of Hawaii’s original cowboys.

HAWAI'I ISLAND – NATURE’S WONDERLANDThe kids will be overwhelmed with the amount of

things to see and do on Hawai'i Island, also known

as the Big Island. Start off with some education at

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, home to one of

the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea. Then

check out Mauna Kea, one of the best places in

the world to go stargazing. Let the kids stay up late

(they are on holiday, after all) and venture up the

mountain to see the night sky at its best. If you’ve

got a budding astronomer in your brood, a visit to

the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i is a must-do.

Like many of Hawaii’s other islands, there

are opportunities to swim with creatures such as

manta rays (which are more adorable than you

may think), kayak, snorkel, whale watch and more.

With all that in store for you and your kids,

it will be tough to drag yourself away from Hawai'i

– but you can always come back!

Say aloha Hawai'i! To find out more give us a call on 0800 838 747, visit houseoftravel.co.nz or come instore today.

T here’s almost nothing kids love more than theme parks, and very few things parents crave more than a little bit of quiet time

while on holiday. On a trip to the Gold Coast and

Sunshine Coast, you can have both! How? By tiring

your kids out with the wide variety of activities

on offer in this warm, sunny part of the world

and sneaking in some rest and relaxation while

they’re at it. In the glitzy Gold Coast and relaxed,

refreshing Sunshine Coast, everyone’s a winner.

Both the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are

just a quick fl ight from home, whether you fl y direct

or stop off in Brisbane for a taste of big city life

en route to your fi nal destination. If you pick your

accommodation wisely, you can organise to be

greeted to a fridge full of pre-selected food at your

apartment, making it incredibly easy to settle in

to your home away from home. Once you get over

the magic of a full fridge (when was the last time

that happened?!), it’s time to start exploring.

AUSSIE’S SILVER LINING – THE GOLD COAST You’ve promised the kids theme parks and now it’s

time to deliver. Luckily, the Gold Coast’s selection

has become increasingly sophisticated over time,

offering rides and attractions that parents will love

almost as much as their offspring. Head to Wet'n'Wild

and fl oat down the decidedly subdued river at

Calypso Beach and pretend you’re on a tropical

island, or pick up the courage to race your kids

down the Super 8 slide – remember, no matter

what the result is, your kids will always win.

Sea World, Movie World and Dreamworld

are also worth a visit, with plenty of educational

and outdoorsy elements to keep everyone happy.

Of course, you’ll also fi nd gut-wrenching rollercoasters

taunting you at every turn, but those are best left

to the kids, right?

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where you’ll also

encounter crocs, lorikeets and even a Tasmanian

devil. Go all out with a special encounter (yes, you

can cuddle a koala) or simply observe the majestic

animals from a comfortable distance.

Cool off after all that adventure on one of the

Coast’s patrolled beaches, which are lined with surf

clubs for easy, tasty and affordable family meals. If

you’ve got a Sporty Spice in your family you may wish

to treat them to a surfing lesson, while jet boating and

jet skiing may be appealing for adrenalin-lovers. Leave

them to it while you relax with a cocktail in one hand

and a book in the other, content in the knowledge

that your kids are falling in love with the Gold Coast.

FROM THE LION KING TO TARZAN; RELIVE ALL YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD STORIES ON YOUR VERY OWN AFRICAN SAFARI.

Y ou’re never too old for the Lion King – or Tarzan for that matter. Why not combine a family holiday with the stories you hold

closest to your heart? You may not meet Simba or Tarzan on your safari, but when you see your first pride of lions in the wild you’ll forget all about your cartoon-filled dreams and focus on the beautiful reality that is Africa.

Take the kids along to share this experience with you and give them something to brag about for years to come. After all, not many seven-year-olds can say they’ve come face to face with a wild elephant!

Are you convinced? Pack up your khaki safari

suit, grab your camera and muster up all the enthusiasm you can – you’re going on a lion hunt.

YOUR AFRICAN FAMILYWhen you get to Makutsi Safari Springs in northeastern South Africa, expect to see more nature and wildlife than you can poke a stick at. The family run private game reserve is just an hour away from Kruger National Park and features mineral spring water and complete serenity. Stay for a week or longer and embrace this little slice of African paradise that is about as far away from Kiwi life as you can imagine.

Your safari package includes private

accommodation, open Land Rover safaris and excursions, two meals a day and guidance from some of the most knowledgeable nature enthusiasts around. Your whole family will be warmly embraced here, and it won’t cost an arm and a leg either. And if you’ve got kids under the age of 12, they’ll be lighter on the wallet with half price deals!
