Institutional Profile Established in 2004 as a private Canadian university, University Canada West (UCW) offers an approach for students to obtain a university degree. Accelerated programs, based on market-driven curriculum and a flexible model of delivery give students the ability to pursue an education that suits their needs.

UCW operates under the authority of the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education, on recommendation of the British Columbia Degree Quality Assessment Board (DQAB). To review the governmental approval for University Canada West, please visit the Recommendations and Decision page on the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education website. Under the leadership of Dr. Verna Magee-Shepherd, BA, MSc, EdD, UCW offers 2 bachelor degrees and a Masters of Business Administration.

• Bachelor of Commerce, General Studies

• Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication

• Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Dr. Shepherd leads a core team of administrator, many of whom have taught at and held executive leadership positions at a number of universities and colleges across Canada. As well, the university is governed by an Academic Council that develops, adopts and changes academic policies and procedures.

University Canada West has introduced a number of innovations to make university education more accessible to both domestic and international students. These include:

• Guaranteed Admission Program that sets a 65% average as the prerequisite for admission to UCW undergraduate programs as well as a three-month term system to allow students to complete their degrees faster – in some cases, in just two years – than they would if they were in other universities.

• Degree Completion Program allows students to transfer a recognized Business Administration diploma as credit toward a Bachelor of Commerce degree faster. Students may also apply to transfer credits from a recognized Media or Communications diploma toward completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in Media and Communications.

• Modified Degree Completion allows students to transfer course credits from any previous post-secondary education towards completion of any undergraduate degree offered at UCW.

• Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition process to further extend access to potential students.

As well, UCW ten-week term system allows students to complete a greater number of courses than they would on the three-semester system used in most Canadian universities. UCW offers both undergraduate and MBA programs at campuses in Victoria and Vancouver as well as online.

Bachelor of Commerce, General Studies (BCom) UCW’s academic year is broken into four 10-week terms; fall, winter, spring and summer. This system allows students to take more courses each year than they could under a standard four-month semester system, yet all courses have 40 contact hours – slightly more than standard university programs.

The Bachelor of Commerce, General Studies degree program is designed to prepare graduates with the requisite knowledge, skills and values to effectively apply the various commercial practices and tools in a corporate environment. Students will develop a solid academic background as well as the real-world skills required by potential employers. The program examines a number of subjects including accounting, advertising, business law, management and entrepreneurship. In addition, specific attention is paid to the areas of International Business, Tourism Management, Strategic Leadership and E-Business.

This undergraduate degree program requires students to complete 120 credits. Students must complete 60 credits allocated to the Bachelor of Commerce Concentration Courses. In addition to the Concentration Courses, students must also meet the 45 credits allocated to the Foundations Courses and 15 credits allotted for the Capstone courses. Completion of the Foundations and Capstone coursework is a mandatory requirement for all University Canada West undergraduate degree programs.

MBA Degrees UCW developed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program that emphasizes leadership, action and solutions. The program enhances students’ professional abilities and gives them the skills sought by contemporary businesses. They learn to identify challenges and opportunities, draw on technology and information, and use advanced analytical and planning approaches that will allow them to create positive changes for an organization. Students in the MBA program also build competencies in critical thinking, persuasive communication, system analysis, change management, leadership, diversity and business ethics.

Two-Year MBA Program Students can complete a 16 course MBA on campus. UCW may be able to further accelerate a student’s MBA program by crediting previous students and work experiences.

The UCW MBA program is an intense and comprehensive program taught in small classes by outstanding professors. The program also brings together a community of students who are well-qualified, professional people from all over the world.

English Language Program UCW offers the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program which is designed for students who score lower than the required score on standardized tests such as TOEFL and IELTS.
