So much to look forward to; cookouts, family gatherings, and vacations! As great as vacations can be, they arent cheap (do kids eat or what?). Especially if you need to rent a vehicle during your trip. Its amazing how fast a daily rental rate of $29.99 per day turns into $69.99 when you start adding in taxes, surcharges, and fees. So, the last thing you want to do is buy their insurance, right? Are rental cars covered by your auto insurance policy? This is one of the most common questions we get dur- ing the summer. In general, most insurance policies will insure a temporary rental vehicle for a covered loss in the same man- ner as your insured vehicles. In other words, the policy language will apply to the private passenger rental vehicle the same way it does to your sched- uled vehicles. Please be careful here. These policies dont magicallyadd coverage that isnt there already. For instance, if you dont have a vehicle with physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage, then your policy wont provide it to the rental car. In this case, you must definitely buy it from the rental company. Im also assuming the rental is for personal reasons. Call us first if the rent- al vehicle is being signed for and paid for by a business, or youre using it for your business and your current vehicle is not rated as business use”. Okay, so now we know (generally) how your insurance policy treats a rent- al car, but is that good enough for the rental company? Maybenot so much. The rental car company will offer you their Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). This isnt insurance. Its simply an endorsement which waives the contract provision that makes you liable for: Losing or damaging the vehicle while you are renting it, whether or not its your fault. The cost to repair or replace the rented vehicle. The loss of income to the rental company while the rental vehicle is being repaired. Your personal auto comprehensive and collision coverage typically only handles the cost of damage or replacing (up to the actual cash value) the vehicle. It usually doesnt cover the loss-of-income provision. Continued on page 2 Summer Means Vacation, and That Means Rental CarsAre You Covered?

Summer is here. So much to look forward to; cookouts, family gatherings, …and vacations! As great as vacations can be, they aren’t cheap (do kids eat or what?). Especially if you need to rent a vehicle during your trip. It’s amazing how fast a daily rental rate of $29.99 per day turns into $69.99 when you start adding in taxes, surcharges, and fees. So, the last thing you want to do is buy their insurance, right? Are rental cars covered by your auto insurance policy? This is one of the most common questions we get dur-ing the summer. In general, most insurance policies will insure a temporary rental vehicle for a covered loss in the same man-ner as your insured vehicles. In other words, the policy language will apply to the private passenger rental vehicle the same way it does to your sched-uled vehicles. Please be careful here. These policies don’t “magically” add coverage that isn’t there already. For instance, if you don’t have a vehicle with physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage, then your policy won’t provide it to the rental car. In this case, you must definitely buy it from the rental company. I’m also assuming the rental is for personal reasons. Call us first if the rent-al vehicle is being signed for and paid for by a business, or you’re using it for your business and your current vehicle is not rated as “business use”. Okay, so now we know (generally) how your insurance policy treats a rent-al car, but is that good enough for the rental company? Maybe…not so much. The rental car company will offer you their Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). This isn’t insurance. It’s simply an endorsement which waives the contract provision that makes you liable for:

• Losing or damaging the vehicle while you are renting it, whether or not it’s your fault.

• The cost to repair or replace the rented vehicle.

• The loss of income to the rental company while the rental vehicle is being repaired.

Your personal auto comprehensive and collision coverage typically only handles the cost of damage or replacing (up to the actual cash value) the vehicle. It usually doesn’t cover the loss-of-income provision. Continued on page 2

And…one more thing. Even if your insurance policy covers the actual loss, the rental company may come back and charge you for “diminished value” of the vehicle, because it is not worth as much as it was before the accident. Yikes! So, should you buy their coverage or not? Well, if money is no object; buy their coverage. Nice and simple. But, again, if your kids eat like mine…you might want to call us first. We may have just the solution for this problem. Some of the companies we represent offer endorsements which will cover loss-of-income, and “diminution of value”. The cost can be as low as $30 per year. These endorsements may even include reimbursement of travel expenses you didn’t expect because of the loss. We can check to see if your company has this option, and give you the peace of mind you deserve.

NOTE: I want to make a distinction. I’m not talking about moving vans, or trucks. Insurance policy language can vary in regards to them. Some carriers will cover a moving van as long as it isn’t a double axel truck, yet others won’t even insure a van if there is a partition between the front seat and the cargo area. When it comes to these, always, ALWAYS call us first.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that a good deal of my time is spent looking for my keys…my glasses…my mobile phone…you get the pic-ture (which reminds me; I’ve lost my photo ID as well). So, I’m the last person to judge anyone who can’t find their Auto ID card. Actually, it’s one of the most common requests we receive. If you realize you’ve lost yours’ and need a replacement, we’ve got a couple of ways to reach us: Besides calling or emailing us, you can request one from our mobile website. Simply go to our secure website on your mobile device and add a link to your home screen. Click “Request Auto ID Card”, and en-ter your name, phone number, email address, and your zip code. As soon as we receive your notice (during business hours), we will mail/email your ID cards for all your insured vehicles.

This is also a great way to have our contact information at your finger-tips should you need quick access. Eventually our mobile site and website will include an automated sys-

tem of providing auto ID cards. We are currently working with our ven-

dors for a means of doing so. I will let you know as soon as the system

is up and running.

In the meantime, many of our carriers, such as Hanover, Auto-Owners,

and Progressive, allow you to create an individual account that gives

you direct 24/7 access to your policy, billing information, and ID cards

online. Give us a call if you’d like to know how to set it up.

Most of my Saturday mornings (and even afternoons) are spent at my desk catching up, or preparing for the week ahead. Although the office is “officially closed”, I will answer the phone, and meet with cli-ents by appointment. I realize that’s when many of our clients are also doing their catching up. From billing questions to purchasing a new vehicle, it feels good to hear the relief in someone’s voice when they realize their issue will be handled immediately. However, this June is a busy month for me. Parents’ birthdays, weddings, and most im-portantly, my 28th wedding anniversary, will keep me from the office the next few Saturdays. So, please forgive my absence. Remember, we can’t bind coverage via voicemail, therefore it’s best to contact us a day or two before if you think you may need to make a change over the weekend. Otherwise, we will return all voicemails and emails the following Monday morning. Thank you for your understanding.
