the path of Growing Up, taken from any reputable developmental model you wish (with all of them highlighting, as we have noted, the same basic 6-to-8 levels of development; in this figure, the vertical axis has the basic 7 levels as given by Integral Theory that we just de-scribed, which are summary generic descriptions of these rainbow lev-els of altitude development). And then across the top are the major 4–5 states of consciousness, which, as we have seen, all complete or full paths of Waking Up tend to emphasize in the order given, from left to right. (These states can also be focused on separately, to yield: as a unity with the total gross realm, Nature mysticism; a unity with the subtle realm, a Deity mysticism; a unity with the formless causal/Wit-ness realm, a Formless or Abyss mysticism; and a unity with the ulti-mate nondual realm, a Nondual or pure Unity mysticism. These are also listed with each major state in the top row.)

And the point, we have seen time and again, is to aim for the highest

major perspectives or dimensions, the “4 quadrants”—the inside and the outside of the individual and the group—perspectives/dimensions that are intrinsic to the Kosmos at all levels, top to bottom.

As we will see, there are many, many ways these 4 quadrants can be represented. Figure 3.1 is one of these, and simply shows a few ex-amples of the items found “in” each of the 4 quadrants, up to the leading edge of evolution today, namely, the turquoise Integral level. Notice that the same basic developmental levels—or levels of “alti-tude”—appear in all 4 quadrants, so that each item listed has corre-lates in all 4 quadrants/dimensions, highlighting the fact that the 4 quadrants are 4 different views or perspectives of the same fundamen-tal occasion. But, looked at through the different quadrants/views, each item appears quite different and, in a certain sense, is quite differ-ent, since each perspective simply highlights a different dimension of the same event. The problem starts—as we will see with increasing

clarity—when not all 4 dimensions are included in any account of any event; the result is a categorical distortion and denial of the reality of what’s actually happening. This is one of the primary contributing fac-tors to the fractured, fragmented, broken, and shattered world in which most humans find themselves now living. And one of the sim-plest ways to begin healing this smashed and splintered world is by including the view from all 4 quadrants in any significant discussion of any important event.

Figure 3.2 is a simple summary of how we did this with Integral Business. And keep in mind that each of the quadrants also “contains” levels (also known as waves, stages, or structures), and lines (or streams), and states, and types. We have been focusing on structures and states in the Upper Left quadrant—the interior of the individual, or the “I” space (and the “I-I” space)—but these general areas (levels, lines, states, types) are present in all the quadrants. But there’s no rea-son to worry about these specifics right now; once we get a little better understanding of quadrants themselves, we will do some truly eye-opening Integral Mindfulness on the quadrants, which will dramati-cally make their reality vividly obvious, thus clarifying all of this merely “theoretical” discussion. We will particularly focus on per-sonal relationships as examples, which is guaranteed to bring much

modern and postmodern modes of culture. The “Culture Wars” are anchored not only in structures of consciousness (mythic, rational, and pluralistic) in the Upper Left, but in techno-economic modes of social interaction (agrarian, industrial, and informational) in the Lower Right. We are especially waiting to see what techno-economic mode in the Lower Right will accompany the Integral structures and cultures of the Left Hand quadrants. (My guess? Cyborg, or humans with direct computer/machine interfaces.) What we can take away from this dis-cussion is the central idea that, as the essential ingredients in any man-ifest universe—what’s required to actually get a world up and running—all 4 quadrants are ever-present, a part of the Total Painting of All That Is, and a part it behooves us to be well aware of. Practicing awareness of (and mindfulness on) the quadrants will help clarify and

masters around, and they are expounding purely ethnocentric recom-mendations of militarism, authoritarianism, murder or war, and other prejudiced notions.* Their Enlightened awareness simply supports their ethnocentric prejudices, because their nondual Suchness looks through the hidden maps of their structure development, and if it is at amber ethnocentric, then that is what the world actually looks like—that is, the Enlightened world is thought to look exactly like that amber ethnocentric version because that is the map through which the world unknowingly is viewed. And since none of the Traditions are aware of these hidden structure maps, none of them know how to spot and rectify these inadequacies. Hence, this is why we need to include these stages of Growing Up with our stages of Waking Up. Examples like this can often get the point across fairly strongly.

Of course, we could also say that the structure-stages of Growing Up in the paramitas are archaic, magic, mythic, rational, pluralistic, and integral (or any vertical axis taken from a well-established devel-opmental model), and that would be true. But the simple 4 stages we have been using, starting with Gilligan, will do just fine (“low/ego- centric,” “medium/ethnocentric,” “high/worldcentric,” and “full/in-tegrated”), and can be displayed as in figure 5.1.

If you succeed in showing a group the importance of including
