What is the integrating sphere

The integrating sphere is a technical optical component.It serves to generate diffuse radiation from directed radiation or to integrate radiation sources that diverge strongly from optical radiation.Our product range offers integrating spheres that cover a useful wavelength range from approx. 250 nm to approx. 20 μm depending on selection of the coating inside the sphere.

Structure This is a hollow sphere, of which the internal wall has a diffuse refl ective coating. For many applications, a barium sulphate (BaSO4) coating is used, whereby the usable wavelength range extends from approx. 320 nm to 1,300 nm.However, the best refl ective properties over a broad wavelength range of approx. 250 nm to 2,500 nm are achieved with our optically diffuse refl ective material OptoPolymer. A number of further advantages of this material are described under the product itself.With infrared radiation > 700 nm, a gold coating is used. The area of the internal sphere wall is specially pre-treated before gilding, in order to obtain a Lambertian characteristic that is as ideal as possible.

The diameters of the sphere ports (openings) are signifi cantly smaller than the internal diameter of the sphe-re. Here, the area of all openings should not exceed 5 % of the total area of the sphere.Furthermore, it should be guaranteed that the light entering the output opening is only such as has been pre-viously refl ected many times on the internal surface.

Our product range of so-called “standard integrating spheres” with barium sulphate (BaSO4) coating compri-ses diameters from 30 mm to 1800 mm. Here, we pursue the philosophy of considering the pre-fi nished half shells of diameters 30, 50, 80, 100, 150, 170, 200, 250, 300, 500 and 800 mm as stock goods. Depending on the application of our customers, the desired sphere diameter is now available. The respective openings are made in consultation with the user. The procedure here is such that users send us their drawing with their requirements or we send users our drawing for approval. We generally distinguish the ports by three types: 1st port; 2nd port with “knife edge”; 3rd port customised.

In the case of universal spheres, we offer a selection of different coatings and sphere diameters. This chapter presents so-called universal spheres for general applications. All spheres have standardised connections of different diameters, onto which additional components can be fi tted with no problem. As well as seals, screens, reducers, light traps, fi lter holders, internal and external light sources, diffusing screens, fi bre adapters, sample holders, detectors, detector holders and satellite spheres, we offer plenty of custo-mised components that can be connected to the so-called “modular port”.

Each of our universal spheres has a baffl e (chicane, light screen) in the equatorial plane, at 45°, to prevent direct light exchange between 0° and 90°.

All openings on our spheres are supplied with so-called port plugs, so the spheres can be completely sealed when not in use. This considerably increases the service life of the respective coating.

The accessories available as standard are co-ordinated and optimised for the respective design of our inte-grating spheres. The fact that the dimensions of the sphere connections (ports etc.) and therefore also the accessories are selected in inches is due to our international orientation in this market. We are happy to implement dimensions in mm after consultation.

Optional accessoriesWe offer a very broad range of optional accessories for your application, taking into account the respective wavelength range used and the geometric dimensions of the integrating sphere. We are happy to help with the selection of any components that might be required.

Integrating spheres with a cylindrical or rectangular external shape in our diffuse refl ective material OptoPolymer

With some applications, which have been increasing particu-larly in recent times, the usable wavelength range of barium sulphate is no longer adequate. The user needs either wave-lengths of < 320 nm or > 1,300 nm, or an extended tempe-rature range. In this case, only one integrating sphere in our diffuse refl ective material OptoPolymer is possible.As well as the extended wavelength range of approx. 250 nm to 2,500 nm, the extremely broad temperature range from -80°C to +280°C is an outstanding property. Note that these specifi cations apply only for the diffuse refl ective ma-terial itself and not necessarily for the complete integrating sphere.

Our diffuse refl ective material OptoPolymer is a solid materi-al that is produced by machine for the respective product. In many cases, it is easier and therefore also cheaper to design the external geometry of the integrating sphere in cylindrical or rectangular form.

This is the preferred practice specifi cally with customised applications in which an integrating sphere is used.From this product segment, we supply individual items and even larger series for the broadest range of users.

These are therefore customised productions. The size of the internal spheres here ranges from a diameter of a few mm to 1,000 mm*.

*A 1,000 mm diameter is the largest integrating sphere that we have supplied to a customer in this material to date.

Light measurement spheres

The light measurement spheres are ideally suited to measuring the total luminous fl ux of lamps. The stan-dard diameters of our spheres are designed from approx. 250 mm to 1,800 mm. We therefore offer sphere diameters for measuring from small lamps/LEDs to fl uorescent tubes of length 120 cm. The internal sphere wall is coated with our OPRC barium sulphate coating. This covers a usable wavelength range from approx. 320 nm to 1,300 nm.

The OPSB-250-LMK / OPSB-300-LMK measu-rement spheres have a diameter of 250 mm or 300 mm and serve to measure miniature and sub-miniature lamps as well as LEDs. The sphe-res are designed for light sources that shine into the spheres, i.e. for measurements without the need to open the spheres. However, both vari-ants have also been supplied as a fold-out tab-letop model.

The OPSB-500-LMK / OPSB-800-LMK measu-rement spheres have a diameter of 500 mm or 800 mm. Both variants are designed with a fold-out frame for tabletop use. The fold-out confi gu-ration allows opening of the spheres in order to place measuring objects inside the spheres.

The OPSB-1000-LMK measurement sphere has a diameter of 1,000 mm. Here too, the structure is implemented with a fold-out frame and the fi xed half shell is designed as the stand variant with robust, lockable rollers. The fold-out confi -guration allows opening of the sphere in order to place measuring objects inside the sphere.

The OPSB-1600-LMK / OPSB-1800-LMK mea-surement spheres have a diameter of 1,600 mm or 1,800mm. Both models are supplied as a stand structure mounted on a rail construction. The structure here comprises one fi xed half shell and one half shell that can be moved on rails. To load the measurement spheres, the mobile half shell is simply moved away from the fi xed half shell, on rails.

Structure options inside the measurement sphereInside, we offer you the broadest range of options for placement of the medium to be measured.For example, we supply an assembly table with electrical contacts in order to be able to connect the res-pective lamp to be measured to a power supply.The respective lamp fi xing / power supply that you require can be implemented through the sphere from the top or the bottom.When producing the respective lamp holder required, we therefore respond completely and entirely to the needs of the user. This also applies for additional ports required or other accessories. The standard spheres specifi ed should merely provide you with an overview of the sphere diameters available.

Spheres for refl ection and transmission measurement

One important application of the integrating sphere is to determine refl ection, transmission and ab-sorption of materials. The integrating function is an essential factor here for optical radiation. This property allows measurement of optical radiation, regardless of whether it is directed or diffuse.

As “standard spheres”, we have specifi ed internal diameter 150 mm (6”). This diameter offers a com-promise with respect to number and size of opening ports, for the level of the measuring signal.

With measuring spheres of smaller diameter, the proportion of port area increases relative to sphere surface.With measuring spheres of larger diameters, the limited level of the measuring signal can have a ne-gative impact on your application.

However, here too, we have produced integrating spheres with diameters of 200, 250 and 500 mm for refl ection and transmission measurement.

Three standard designs are offered, which differ with respect to internal coating of the spheres.

1. OPSB-150-RT Barium sulphate coating, usable wavelength range 320 – 1,300 nm2. OPS-150-RT OptoPolymer coating, usable wavelength range 250 – 2,500 nm3. OPSG-150-RT OPGold coating, usable wavelength range 0.7 – 20 μm

Furthermore, these three coating variants are subdivided into two groups. The fi rst group of measurement spheres has fi ve 1-inch ports.

OpeningsThe RT sphere features fi ve fl at openings. Four openings serve to attach the sample and the reference. The-se four openings are arranged geometrically such that an 8° double beam shape is possible for both refl ection and transmission measurements. These are located in the equatorial plane and each has a diameter of 20 mm. In the north pole position, there is a detector opening with a diameter of 14 mm.For better cosine behaviour, the sample openings are angled in a funnel shape (cutting edge). At each ope-ning, there are four M3 threaded holes to make the attachment of accessories such as sample holders or light traps as easy as possible. As only one opening is required for hemispherical transmission measurements, the delivery includes two sealing plugs. We also supply a sample holder.

AssemblyThe sphere housing can be placed directly on a table; no further assembly is required. There are fi ve M6 threaded holes on the bottom of the sphere to facilitate assembly on an optical table or on the double pivoting baseplate that is available as an option, on request also with pneumatic control.

AccessoriesA light trap is required for diffuse refl ection measurements. The proportion refl ected directly is absorbed in the light trap.

This area focuses on collection of the total radiated power from very divergent or collimated radiation sources.

So-called baffl es are used with all measurement spheres. These prevent the coupled-in radiation from being able to go directly from the input to the output port.Due to special requirements for the input and detector ports, this baffl e is omitted in the case of our spheres for laser performance measurement.Regarding this, please see the illustration below on the structure of our laser performance measurement spheres.

Homogenous light sources

A homogenous light source provides a very homogenous and very stable ray density. This is the essential condition for calibration and for testing CCD sensors, detectors, CCD cameras etc.We have defi ned a number of sphere diameters as standard, which have emerged as the result of several ap-plications. The sphere diameter here is based on the required size of the homogenous opening. This opening should be no larger than 1/3 of the sphere diameter. The homogeneity achieved at the output is 98% here.These systems specifi ed as standard represent examples. According to your application, we can create and construct the optimum system for you on the basis of your requirement profi le.Depending on the size of the sphere, a monitor detector can be integrated, which continuously monitors the lamp power inside the sphere. So-called port plugs are supplied in order to allow sealing of the monitor de-tector ports if they are not required.

The homogenous light sources with a sphere diameter up to 300 mm, i.e. up to a homogenous opening of diameter 100 mm, can also be supplied with a satellite sphere. In this case, the light radiates into the satellite sphere. At the connecting point of both spheres, the quantity of light radiating into the larger sphere can be varied by means of an integrated iris diaphragm. Furthermore, there is an integrated diffuser to improve the homogenous properties.All sphere systems are coated with our OPRC barium sulphate coating..

Nearly all Integrating spheres offered previously have had an external shell made of pressed aluminium half shells. When selecting the suppliers of the half shells we use, we place great emphasis on the quality of the moulds employed here. This governs the uniformity of the spheres used subsequently, both internally and externally.However, no Integrating sphere with pressed half shells can guarantee really precise alignment of the mea-surement openings to each other.To help here, our precision spheres are produced completely on a 5-axle machine. Admittedly, this means more costly production of this product range, whereby the complete body of the integrating sphere is created from one solid aluminium block. However, for extremely precise alignment of the measurement openings to each other, this process is highly recommended and possibly essential.

The internal sphere diameters we offer range from a few mm to approx. 500 mm.
