Motivation

• Customer products in everyday life gets user friendly• Users expect this from industrie produtcs as well• User-centered approach helps to reduce error costs

• Forrester Study1: “Human-centered design improved product outcomes and reduced the risk of costly failures”

The current development processes are guided by norms (from Safety, Quality and IT Security).

These three areas ensure safety, functionality and reliability.

What about efficiency, effectiveness, satisfaction and joy?

CENELEC 50126/50128 V-model

• The EN 50126 defines the V-model• Often used in phases:

• Concept, system definition, risk analysis, requirement, architecture, software/hardware design, implementation, integration, validation, system acceptance, operation and decommissioning

• Each phase has it verification measures• Overall is RAMS(s)

• New agile approaches, often used only in implementation

• Fun fact: “user needs” are only mentioned in the validation

Human Factors and UX

Human factors: Which human characteristics have to be considered in order to • enable smooth interaction at the human-machine interface

(Surface)• optimally match a technical environment to the individual

(Framing)• optimally distribute the tasks, authorities and responsibilities

between the individual and the computer (Structure)• mitigate the consequences of technical and human errors

(Scope)• improve the safety and efficiency of the overall human-machine

system (Strategy)

ISO 9241-210 – UX process

• Goal: Requirements and recommendations for human-centered design principles and activities throughout the life cycle of computer-based interactive systems

• No separate process• Human-centered activities are integrated into

existing processes• Design is based on an explicit understanding of

users; they may be involved throughout development

• Process is iterative until the user needs/requirements are met

UX and CENELEC

• UX and CENELEC are not a contradiction• UX has to be integrated into development

processes• Iterative or agile process fits to ISO 9241-210• In addition to safety, function and security, focus on

user needs• Awareness of UX in all roles

• Easiest task to start: • Talk to your users not only with your contractors
