Solid state soft start advantages …

Electrical benefits

The advantages of Benshaw’ssolid state control technology areparticularly important whenprocess conditions create varyingload demands on a motorduring startup.

For example, with competingtechnologies a loaded motor willrequire more inrush current—over a longer period of time—toachieve the torque needed tobegin moving a load. During thattime, circuits can trip and motoroverheating may occur—placingsignificant demands on yourpower distribution system.

In contrast, Benshaw’s patentedMX3 soft start technology rampsvoltage to the motor in a smooth, stepless manner, eliminating

Benshaw’s MX3 based solid state starters offersuperior performance when compared to any electro-mechanical starting technology.

For most applications,Benshaw’s solid state startingtechnology offers importantperformance advantages overother starting techniques.

◆ Lower acquisition andoperating costs

◆ Stepless torque control◆ Precise control over starting

and stopping times◆ Less mechanical stress on

drive train components◆ Extended motor life◆ Fewer power distribution

problems

Cost benefits

Solid state starters typicallycost less than competing reducedvoltage motor starting techno-logies, but they also offeroperating cost advantage byhelping to lower energy costsand by reducing wear on motors, drive train components anddriven machinery.

Benshaw’s solid state soft starttechnology provides precise, stepless control over motorstarting voltages (torque), whichresults in smoother accelerationof the motor, reduced shockloading to the drive train andmachinery, and better control ofmotor inrush currents.

Benshaw’s solid state startersalso provide superior built-inprotection for your motorand machine.

Intelligent motor control

Benshaw’s intelligent MX3

based medium and high voltagecontrols provide—as standard—a level of advanced functionalitynot available with traditionalmotor starters or competitivecontrol equipment:

◆ DC injection braking◆ Motor heater control◆ Anti-windmilling◆ Patented slow speed

Cyclo converter ramp◆ Phase controller◆ Current follower◆ ATL bypass◆ Precise SCR firing

excessive inrush currents, expensive voltage surges, over-heating and the damaging effectsof a sudden, stressful start.

Additional electrical benefitsinlcude.

◆ Reduced supply linevoltage drop

◆ Compliance with utilitycompany starting restrictions

◆ Elimination of oversizedgenerators

◆ Fewer branch circuitprotection trips

◆ Improved power quality◆ Reduced rotor and stator

stress◆ Extended motor life

Mechanical benefits

Benshaw’s MX3 technologyallows different starting ramps tobe programmed for loaded andunloaded conditions, providingmaximum soft start efficiencyin any situation.

◆ Reduced shock to motors, machinery, drive trains, loadsand the manufacturing process

◆ Reduction of transientaccelerating forces that canresult in damage to belts, endpulleys, gearboxes and chains

Process benefits

◆ Fewer process disruptionsresulting from a restart in mid-process (while product isloading the system)

◆ Reduced material damage◆ Reduced downtime◆ Increased productivity◆ Longer system life◆ Prevention of catastrophic

system failures

Solid state switched capacitance …

to variable frequency drives(VFD), reduced voltage auto-transformers (RVAT), reducedvoltage solid state (RVSS) and fullvoltage (FV) starting can beobserved graphically inFigure 2.

Variable frequency drives canstart almost all motors andconnected loads at 1.0 per unitcurrent whereas RVATs (reducedvoltage auto-transformers) andRVSS (reduced voltage solidstate starters) require a higherper unit current—although notas high as with full voltagestarting. MX3 Fusion TechnologySCS (switched capacitance sys-tems) result in further reductionof per unit starting current, toless than that of an RVAT.

Using MX3 technology, Benshaw can also incorporateswitched capacitance to further reduce the demand onyour power distribution system.

Using MX3 technology,Benshaw integrates a modularswitched power factor correctioncapacitor bank with a RediStart™medium voltage soft starter tofurther reduce the VAR demand(and therefore the current) on thedistribution system voltage bus.

MXMX3

This technology, known asMX3 Fusion, reduces the startingcurrent on the supply systemresulting in an increase in themotor bus voltage. This is graphi-cally depicted in Figure 1, amotor start comparison graph ofvoltage versus time.

MX3 Fusion

STRUCTURED ENGINEERING PROCESS

Benshaw’s ISO 9001 certified engineering process andproduction system delivers engineered solutions preciselymatched to your requirements—with guaranteed qualityand global compliance to any standard you specify.

Benshaw provides customengineered systems designed tocustomer requirements and ISO9001 certified quality by payingattention to the details right fromthe beginning. Benshaw startsby understanding the customer’smachine—the load that the motoris operating. Understanding themachine load, particularly duringstart, is a critical first step towardsan engineered solution. Often,Benshaw can assist by suggestingoptimal motor characterisiticsrequired for a satisfactorydesign solution.

Whether the motor is induction, wound rotor or synchronous,Benshaw has the technicalexpertise to understand howthe motor will perform duringstarting with a solid state reducedvoltage motor starter.

Combining the motor, the drivenload and the starter together topredict the performance of thecombination of the componentparts as a system is the next stepin the process. When the effect ofstarting such a system is criticalto the utility supplying power tothe system, Benshaw understandsall of the details and can predictperformance of the system andthe effect on the utility powersource. The result is detailedsystem requirements and motorstarter settings for the system.

Precision systems analysis …

MXBenshaw can custom configure intelligent, MX3-based motor control centers and lineups to meet thecontrol needs of any load … in any industry.

With a firm understanding ofthe objective (or technical con-cern—such as utility voltage sagor motor bus voltage sag),Benshaw’s engineering analysisstarts with gathering systeminformation either by e-mail,phone conversation or asite visit.

Once the pertinent informationis available, a motor startinganalysis is performed usingBenshaw proprietary engineeringsoftware. Using motor inertia, speed torque curves, motor dam-age curves and load data, anoptimum safe current startingprofile is generated using propri-etary computer software programsdeveloped by Benshaw based uponyears of engineering experience.

In order to correct for systemvoltage drop, power factor correc-tion capacitors can be used tocompensate for reactive powerdemanded by the motor.

Further detailed engineeringsimulations are completed usingadditional software such as EMTPto assure that there are no othertechnical issues to resolve. This isparticularly important whenusing power factor correctioncapacitors on the motor bus.

The control topology is selectedas determined by the application(such as TruTorque™ for pumps, current ramp for fans and KWcontrol for generators) in con-junction with the customer’smain objective. Once the motorstarting time and maximumcurrent is determined, a systemvoltage drop analysis is per-formed to determine the sag onboth the utility and the motorbus. MATHCAD® worksheetsbased upon sound engineeringfundamental principles allowprecise engineering calculationsto be performed based upon thesystem topology. Further dataintegrity checks are performed toassure that the power system, motor and load data look reason-able from a technical viewpoint.

Applications specialists atBenshaw are available to helpyou evaluate current and futurecontrol system requirements anddevelop a sound strategy forretrofit, upgrade or replacement. And when you’re ready to makea move, Benshaw can followthrough with a complete design, production, installation andtesting package.
