The Osher FoundationThe Bernard Osher Foundation, headquartered in San Francisco, was founded in 1977 by Bernard Osher, a respected businessman and community leader. The Foundation seeks to improve

quality of life through support for higher education and the arts. Mr. Osher is a community-oriented businessman whose philanthropy created Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) across the country. Our OLLI is in a network of 121 lifelong learning programs on university and college campuses across the country, with at least one grantee in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

OLLI owes its existence to Bernard and Barbro Osher, whose vision and continuing moral and financial support of lifelong learning is unprecedented and unparalleled. We are very fortunate and proud to have an OLLI at Texas Tech University.

At Texas Tech University, we aspire to provide students an experience that is transformative, one that promotes intellectual curiosity, and promotes life-long learning.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Texas Tech University embodies these attributes. It offers unique opportunities for local citizens of more than50 years of age who have a common interest in continuing their learning experiences

and intellectual stimulation in an organization of like-minded people who value the joy of learning.

Many individuals have taken advantage of the offerings afforded through this exciting program. Courses are developed by peers with the goal of providing a high quality learning experience accessible to all. In addition, OLLI membership provides an opportunity for social interaction and new friendships with members who bring a lifetime of personal and professional experience to class.

I welcome and encourage your participation in this program that will provide opportunities to grow intellectually and socially.

Sincerely,

Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D.President.

Welcome to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Texas Tech University!

Our MissionThe mission of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Texas Tech University is to provide enjoyable and stimulating non-credit learning and cultural opportunities for its members.

What is Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)? OLLI began as a continuing education program at Texas Tech University in 2002-2003 as Texas Tech Lifelong Learning. In 2008, endowment support was received from the Bernard Osher Foundation. In recognition of its affiliation with the Osher Foundation and as one of 120 such institutes nationwide, Texas Tech Lifelong Learning was re-named Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Texas Tech University. We are self-sustaining, supported through membership dues, class fees, an endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation, donations and in-kind support from Texas Tech University. No tests, no grades, no research papers – just intellectual stimulation.

What are the requirements to join? Everyone age 50 and older may join. The only prerequisite is a desire to learn.

What does membership cost? Membership is $35 per person, valid for a year from date of purchase, and does not include cost of individual courses.

Who teaches OLLI classes? Most of our classes are taught by distinguished professors, both active and retired. Other instructors are experts in their fields, university doctoral students or OLLI members. There is one common denominator: they teach because they enjoy education and OLLI students.

How do I sign up? Below are the methods to register for memberships, classes and other events:

• Register securely online at www.olli.ttu.edu. We accept VISA, MasterCard and Discover.

• Mail a completed registration form with a check. The form can be found in this catalog or printed from www.olli.ttu.edu. See form for details.

• Bring completed form with check to the Lubbock OLLI office during office hours.

What if I have to cancel my registration? Because space in classes is limited, please let the office know as soon as possible if you need to cancel a class registration. It is important that you are aware that canceling any class requiring bus transportation, food or supplies will result in loss of the registration fee unless the member is able to find a replacement to attend in their place.

For all other classes, we ask that members let us know of their cancellation at least four days in advance to be eligible to receive a credit transfer to be applied to another class or a refund. Members may also choose to donate their refund if they wish to support OLLI operations. We do provide full refunds on a case-by-case basis for illness, medical emergencies etc. Membership fees cannot be credited or refunded.

What happens for weather or other emergency cancellations? OLLI follows the same policy as Texas Tech University for cancellations because of weather or other acts of nature or emergencies. If TTU classes are canceled, OLLI classes are also canceled. Postings can be found at www.emergency.ttu.edu as well as on local television or radio stations. OLLI reserves the right to substitute instructors, rearrange class schedules, or cancel classes because of low enrollment or illness. In case of class cancellation or a schedule change, you will be notified and may receive a credit for another class in the same semester or a refund.

Where is the OLLI office? Our office is in the Texas Tech Plaza, 5th floor, Suite 513 at 19th and University Avenue, Lubbock, Texas. Our email is [email protected], and our phone number is (806) 742-OLLI (6554).

My Characters Did It: “Surprise, Texas” by Andy Wilkinson

Non-fiction writing is done by an author grappling with facts. Fiction writing is done by an author grappling with their characters. Join celebrated author and poet, Andy Wilkinson, as he introduces us to his story about “Surprise, Texas” – a historical fiction, or a fictional history – you decide which. Intended to be read aloud, this is a story about how we sometimes must become what we pretend to be. Set in the ephemeral village of Surprise in the hard-scrabble oil patch of Andrews County, Texas, Thom Ed Jones recounts the history of the place and its peoples, a tribe by choice living by design in obscurity, quartered in homes with wheels. Surprise, Texas, is the sort of place you drive past as quickly as you can; though after reading Thom Ed’s story, you might want to lighten your load of possessions and throw in with all these surprises.

Instructor: Andy Wilkinson is a poet, songwriter, singer and playwright whose particular interest is the history and peoples of the Great Plains. His work has received several honors, among them the Texas Historical Foundation’s John Ben Shepperd Jr. Craftsmanship Award and five National Western Heritage “Wrangler” Awards in four different categories. He is an artist in residence at the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University.

The Rise and Fall of the Average Rock Band(Told in two films)

Most pop and rock bands, if they experience success at all, do so all too briefly. Sometimes known as one-hit wonders, the story behind these groups often follows a predictable script, something that is delightfully presented in this two-film series. We will first watch Tom Hanks’ debut as writer and director in 1996’s “That Thing You Do.” Set in 1964, it follows the rise and eventual fall of a Pennsylvania pop/rock band. The second week we will watch director Alan Parker’s 1991 film, “The Commitments.” Although set in early 90’s working-class Dublin, the music is all 1960’s and 70’s American soul, and rhythm and blues! The performances are just wonderful; but be warned, this working-class cast of characters uses quite colorful adult language – in abundance! If you love music and the behind-the-scene stories, please join us for these two films!

Instructor: Larry Hess, M.M., is a retired Lubbock ISD educator. He is also a professional musician having retired after 30 years as a percussionist with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.

“It Happened One Night” (1934) See the film that provided the template for romantic

comedies. Every rom-com since 1934 has been influenced by this film. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert star in this story of two people thrown together by fate, who at first can’t stand each other, but eventually do fall in love. “It Happened One Night” won the Academy Award for Best Picture (1935) as well as winning in four other categories. Come join us for a fun evening filled with food and laughter.

FinanceCurrent Budget Projection for 2019

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a substantial revision in U.S. federal tax law especially as that law applies to corporations. The law was lauded as providing jet fuel that will supercharge the economy. Supporters promised that the lower corporate tax rate would increase jobs and wages as firms would use their tax savings to reinvest in the U.S., building more plants, investing in new equipment and hiring new employees. Critics argued that firms would use the money instead to pay dividends to shareholders and/or buy back stock. The extent to which the actual response of corporate America leaned toward the former prediction versus the latter will effectively determine the economic and revenue effects of the tax change. In this course, we will review how U.S. firms responded to the new tax law and how major economic indicators have changed since passage of the 2017 tax law.

Instructor: Robert Ricketts, Ph.D., is director of the School of Accounting and the Frank M. Burke chair in taxation at the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University (Lubbock). He has studied, taught and conducted research in taxation for more than 30 years.

“Harvard Beats Yale 29-29”Flipping through the Sunday sports section of the

Avalanche-Journal on November 24, 1968, attention was paid to #9 Arkansas defeating TTU 42-7; Oklahoma crushing Nebraska 47-0; or maybe #2 Ohio State’s triumph over #4 Michigan 50-14. Getting little attention was the Ivy League championship game: Harvard “defeats” Yale 29-29. This year marks the 50th anniversary of that contest known since as “The Game.” The class will view and discuss the documentary “Harvard Beats Yale 29-29” that tells the story of this clash of undefeated teams and the players and spectators including Tommy Lee Jones, Calvin Hill, Al Gore, Brian Dowling, Gary Trudeau and Meryl Streep. This game is a prime example that the game is not over until it is over.

Ruthie Foster: Grammy-Nominated Blues, Folk and Soul Singer

In the tight-knit musical community of Austin, Texas, it’s tough to get away with posturing. You either bring it, or you don’t. If you do, word gets around. And one day, you find yourself duetting with Bonnie Raitt or standing onstage with the Allman Brothers at New York’s Beacon Theater and trading verses with Susan Tedeschi. You might even wind up getting nominated for a Best Blues Album Grammy – three times in a row. And those nominations would be in addition to your seven Blues Music Awards, three Austin Music Awards, the Grand Prix du Disque Award from the Académie Charles-Cros in France and a Living Blues Critics’ Award for Female Blues Artist of the Year. There’s only one Austinite with that résumé: Ruthie Foster.

Reduced Shakespeare Company: Internationally Renowned Acting Troupe

It’s back! “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” is the original and timeless classic from the Reduced Shakespeare Company (RSC). Every ten years, give or take, the RSC goes back to the source, the fountainhead, the birth of all things that followed.

All 37 plays in 97 minutes! “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” is an irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard’s plays. It was London’s longest-running comedy, having clocked a very palpable nine years in London’s West End at the Criterion Theatre! The show has been seen at the Kennedy Center, Off-Broadway and from sea to shining sea. Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s comedies, histories and tragedies in one wild and memorable ride that leaves audiences breathless and helpless with laughter.
