INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTUS

CANTERBURY INTERNATIONAL COLLEGEPartnership with University Of Canterbury & UCIC

Welcome to Canterbury International College (CANIC).We have been involved as an NZQA registered PTE since 2003. Initially we provided academic courses in pre-university subjects including English at all levels. Over the years we developed strong links with sever-al local high schools and our students attended senior NCEA courses. Our students had a high success rate and most went on to further academic study at NZ universities.

Currently we provide courses in English language from beginners to advanced, creating pathways to high school courses, pre-university courses and full university study. Our courses are flexible and individually designed. We have experienced, dedicated and caring teachers and admin staff who give excellent support to our students.

Christchurch is the big city in the South Island of New Zealand. It is modern, safe and exciting with the chance to explore the beautiful South Island’s towns, lakes, ski fields and mountains just a few hours away.

If you decide to study with us, you will be part of a wonderful learning environment and you will have laid a strong foundation for your future career plans.

Christchurch City Christchurch is New Zealand’s second largest city and the gateway to the South Island. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps. Located on the east coast of the South Island, Christchurch is a city of contrasts. There is nowhere else in the world where within two hours of an international airport you can ski at a world class alpine resort, play golf, bungy jump, go rafting, mountain biking, hot-air ballooning, wind surfing, whale watching and visit world class wineries and gardens.

Auckland CityAuckland is a city in New Zealand’s North Island. It is the largest city in the country, with a population of around 1.5 Million. And Auckland is the economic center of New Zealand, an international city that connects the world, and a rapidly emerging innovation center in the Asia Pacific region. It is where all kinds of large-scale events are held and home of quantities of top technology companies. Auckland’s fabulous lifestyle has attracted a large number of international investors and entrepreneurs to develop here.Auckland has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Livable Cities in the World for successive years.

New ZealandNew Zealand is a small country, about the size of Great Britain or Japan. It is a country of beautiful landscapes, mountain chains, volcanoes, beaches, lakes, fiords and forests. The first human settlers in New Zealand were the Maori people who arrived about 800 years ago. Settlers from Europe started arriving in New Zealand from about 1800 onwards. The European settlers gave special recognition to Maori as the indigenous people of New Zealand and this understanding was enshrined in the Treaty of Waitangi signed by Maori and European representatives in 1840. The Treaty of Waitangi respects and protects Maori customs and culture. Canter-bury International College acknowledges and honours the Treaty of Waitangi and respects the cultural needs and protocols of the Maori people.

Code of Practice To ensure that international students are well informed, safe and properly cared for, the New Zealand Government has developed a Code of Practice for Pastoral Care for International Students (The Code). NIZBT is a signatory to The Code, which provides a framework for a high standard of service. Copies of The Code are available on request or can be down-loaded from the NZQA webpage: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/studying-in-new-zealand/coming-to-study-in-new-zealand/international-student-care/. Please refer to your Student Handbook, available via our website, for further information on the Code of Practice.

Accident Insurance The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and tempo-rary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz.

Medical and Travel Insurance All international students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance for the duration of their valid student visa period at CANIC. We can organise the international student insurance for you, please select this option when completing the Student Application Form and we will add the cost of the insurance to your invoice.

Withdrawals, Refunds, Student Fee Protection and IndemnificationStudents who do not complete their enrolment at CANIC must apply in writing to the Campus Manager of NZIBT within the first ten (10) working days of the programme for a refund of their prepaid tuition fees (less a deduction of 25% of costs already incurred). No refunds are provided after the tenth working day of the programme. International students wishing to withdraw from a programme after ten working days must apply in writing to the Princi-pal. There is no fee refund in this case. CANIC is obliged to notify Immigration NZ of the withdrawal. If a visa renewal is rejected by INZ after the programme has started there will be no refund. If a visa is cancelled for breach of visa conditions at any time during the duration of the programme there will be no refund. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) requires that a Private Training Establishment (PTE) such as CANIC has an arrangement in place to protect student fees in the event of a programme closure. CANIC’s Trust Account protects students’ fees should a programme close. Programme closure events are outside of a student’s control, such as a cancel-lation of a programme, the withdrawal of either accreditation or programme approval by NZQA.

Conditions of Refund CANIC’s refund policy and the availability of complaints and appeals processes does not remove the right of the student to take action under New Zealand’s consumer affairs laws. In the situation of a programme closure or cancellation, the student will receive a full refund. Refunds will be paid in New Zealand dollars directly into a nominated overseas bank account or sent by cheque to your overseas address. The refund will be paid within the four weeks after receiving your written claim or within two weeks of CANIC being unable to meet contract obligations with you. CANIC adheres to Section 236A of the Education Act 1989 and subsequent amendments. It has an approved Trust Account for Student Fee protection and Student Fee Indemnification (the remaining portion of a student’s fee at any point of the programme). The Trust Account is sufficient to cover the full amount of student fees and is administered by The Public Trust.

Eligibility for Health Services Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health and can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.
