As a nursing student at PCC, Feny Widjaja has big dreams. One of them is to secure

funding for buses to travel through rural areas in Indonesia to provide health care for

children. Doctors are very rare, she said. Health care in my country is considered a

    privilege.

When Feny decided to go back to school for nursing, she chose PCC for the reasonable

tuition and the range of opportunities available for her new career. The advisor here

is really helpful in explaining it all, describing all the options that are available to me,

she said. These include getting an associates degree in nursing at PCC or transferring

to a four-year school to earn a bachelors degree.

Feny thinks international students should consider PCC because they have everything

available here. All the advisors can give them all the information they need to

Before Seong Su Kim came to the U.S., he spent six years working at the U.S. Embassy

Seoul, the last two years as a clerk in the non-immigrant visa branch.

Its all about customer service, he said, referring to the average of 2,000 people who

pass through their doors daily. Perhaps it is because of this experience that Seong

appreciates PCCs array of support services. He named the Student Success Center, the

Writing Center, and the English Conversation Program as just a few of the services hes

taken advantage of while at PCC.

I met really great instructors and they were really helpful, really approachable, he

said. Whenever I had a question, they eagerly answered me by e-mail, phone so I

could get the answer. As part of the English Conversation program, he meets weekly

with other local and international students to practice conversing in English.

After PCC, Seong hopes to continue on to earn a bachelors degree. After

Seeking adventure and something new, Uyen Tran began thinking about study abroad

opportunities a couple of years ago.

She visited PCC online and found herself drawn to radiography, which combined her

interests in medicine and technology. Once she came to PCC, she embraced the less

uniform learning environment she found in the U.S. I love the education here, she

said. The student and teacher relationship is really interesting to me. Its really

    comfortable .

Also on the list of Uyens favorite things? I love Portland! she said. In the city, she

likes shopping, but on the weekends, she and her friends often take trips to Mt. Hood

or the coast. Uyen also cites the friendly people and the multicultural aspect of

Portland, where she said you meet people from all over the world, not just Americans.

When Yuko Mitomo rst came to the U.S., she spoke little English and didnt know a

single person in the country. She started school at a private four-year college, but

soon switched to PCC to save money and get the extra support she needed to excel.

PCC is better than other schools because students can take regular classes while

taking [English Speakers of Other Languages] classes, she said. [ESOL] teachers are

experts in teaching English and supportive, so your English will rapidly improve. At

PCC, a TOEFL score is not required before you can start taking classes for credit.

To Yukos surprise, she ended up choosing Womens Studies as her major. In Japan, we

dont have womens studies. Women have more condence and courage here. In fact,

moving to a new country and learning a new language have made Yuko

more condent. She said, I didnt know anybody in the U.S., so I
