Study requirements, architecture, evolution and convergence of future networks

Studies focused on network aspects of mobile telecommunication networks,

including International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), wireless Internet, convergence of mobile and fixed networks, mobility management, mobile multimedia network functions,

internetworking, interoperability Enhancements to existing ITU‑T Recommendations on IMT.

Why new network? New network appears when important features

change Implementation technology, application, …

It’s possible to use old one, but optimized one is often more convenient and cheap We can access the internet with telephone & modems

??? Is it time to find a new network ???

NGN NGN features: packet-based, managed QoS, improved

security, separation of service/transport stratum, etc. These are good, may apply in the future, but the focus

may shift …?

Definition of FN: A network able to provide services,

capabilities, and facilities difficult to provide using existing network technologies.

A Future Network is either:a)A new component network or an enhanced

version of an existing one, orb)A heterogeneous collection of new

component networks or of new and existing component networks that is operated as a single network.

Four Objectives Environment awareness

FNs should be environmental friendly.

Service awareness FNs should provide services

that are customized with the appropriate functions to meet the needs of applications and users.

Data awareness FNs should have architecture

that is optimized to handling enormous amount of data in a distributed environment.

Social-economic awareness FNs should have social-

economic incentives to reduce barriers to entry for the various participants of telecommunication sector.

Design Goals, selection FNs should have device, system, and network level

technologies to improve power efficiency and to satisfy customer’s requests with minimum traffic (Power Consumption)

FNs should have mechanisms for retrieving data in a timely manner regardless of its location (Data Access)

FNs should be designed to provide sustainable competition environment to various participants in ecosystem of telecommunication by providing proper economic incentives (Economic Incentives)

FNs should accommodate a wide variety of traffic and support diversified services (Service Diversity)

FNs should facilitate and accelerate provision of convergent facilities in differing areas such as towns or the countryside, developed or developing countries (Service Universalization)

Network Virtualization

Network virtualization is the technology that enables the creation of logically isolated network partitions over shared physical network infrastructures so that multiple heterogeneous virtual networks can simultaneously coexist over the shared infrastructures.

Also, network virtualization allows the aggregation of multiple resources and makes the aggregated resources appear as a single resource.

The detailed definition and framework of network virtualization are described in (ITU-T Y.3011 (01/12) “Framework of network virtualization for future networks”).
