Project Title International work camp on Gender sensitivity among the rural community of West Nile region. Youth Action against Gender inequality

Date 5th - 24th July 2016Duration 3 weeksProject Code UPA/005/16Project hosts UPA Arua BranchProject theme “Be the change you want to see “promoting positive attitudes on

gender amongst youth.Project location The project will take place at UPA Arua Branch, Ezoova Village,

Driwala Parish Pajulu Sub-county 3 Km from Arua Town. The administrative and commercial headquarter of the district is 520 Kms from Kampala.

Project Background Women in Uganda constitute majority of farmers and unpaid workers as they are responsible for most of the care economy.

Less than 12% of economically active women are in paid employment as compared to 25% of economically active men. The rest are either self-employed or contribute to unpaid family labour.

Male participation rate in wage sectors is more than 3 times that of women. Even in paid employment, women are more likely than men to be in low-status, poorly paid jobs.

About 50% of employed women work in the lowest paying three sectors, namely agriculture, household and mining and quarrying as compared to 33% of men working in those sectors.

In Uganda as in many African countries, gender discrimination means that women must submit to an overall low social status than men. For many women this reduces their power to act independently, become educated, avoid poverty, and or escape reliance upon abusive men. Many girls and young women become forced into sex or are forced into trade sex for economic survival. It is common for girls to come sexually active at a much younger age than men, causing the rise of HIV / AIDS to become even more prolonged. Older men are breaking the long established norms and choosing younger

Page 17: International Workcamp Projects for 2016 - 2017

and younger girls to be their sexual partners. In doing so in fact these men are infecting them with HIV. In some districts, HIV prevalence rate among 13-19 year Old girls is at least 10 times higher in male of the same age. This work camp therefore is intended to prevent gender inequality in the Peri—urban setting of Pajulu. This project is in line with Uganda Vision 2040 which has a part which aims at addressing gender issues and building women capacity.

Project objective To equip 200 stakeholders with skills in forum theater To mobilize and sensitize 2000 community members in Pajulu
