Hardware is Hard: Yes but Why?

I will explain why starting a hardware company has distinct challenges that software companies don't have.

Speed: By using video examples from our lead hardware engineer I will show that iterating with hardware is hard vs software where you can fix or A/B test quickly Raising Money: This has distinct implications for raising money as investors require different expectations.   By using examples I will show the different avenues to find money a) Crowdfunding b) Angel c) Corporate VC d) VC and use examples for each e) Accelerator (Start Up Boot Camp) Product/Market Fit:   Using examples from 150 Sherlock Beta Testers, I will show the method we used to know we really had a product that people wanted. Scale: Using examples from PARROT(Paris based) I will show how you can take an IOT to become a public company with a 3 minute video from the founder.   I will discuss ways to partner with factories in Asia and minimise supply chain headaches. Conclusion: I will argue that actrually hardware is not as hard as we all think, it just looks scary but if you follow the guidelines you can win

The Future of Connected Home: How to Win with Partners

Opening up the connected home market has shown to be quite difficult. Why is that? And what can be done to realize growth? Based on the sound experiences of a successful launch of an open connected home platform in Germany and extending it to the European market, this talk makes a case for collaborative approaches to tap into the smart home’s potential. It addresses the intricacies of highly fragmented markets and explains the need for open source software, customer-centric architectures and new business models based on partnerships.

Michael Mulquin has been working for the last twenty years on how technology can help neighbourhoods, cities and regions work better. He is an active member of most of the European and International standards bodies working on developing standards and guidance documents for smart cities.   He is technical author for two recently published British Standards Institution (BSI) publications: PD8101 Smart cities – Guide to the role of the planning and development process, and PD8100 Smart cities overview - Guide.   He brings a comprehensive understanding of the key issues involved in implementing a smart city and how IoT fits within these.

Standards – Building Blocks of a Smart City

A key secret to the success of smart city projects is the development of common approaches to tackling city issues. These can lead to the gathering of clear evidence as to what works, and a level of consistency that allows products and services to be developed at scale. The challenge is designing these common approaches and standards so that they can underpin, and not constrain, innovation. This session will cover the role of standards as building blocks of the smart city, describe the work going on in the UK, Europe and globally to develop smart city standards and show how these will help provide a consistent framework for the development of IoT smart city applications.

Putting the User Back in Control in the IoT

The Internet is huge part of our daily lives and it's difficult to imagine a world without information and connectivity (literally) at your fingertips. However, we've also made sacrifices to achieve these benefits, usually without considering the trade-offs. By adopting large centralised services we've made an implicit trade that in exchange for something useful, we will share all our habits and data with them. As we head towards the Internet of Things — where *everything* will end up connected to the network — we have to consider how we can put the user back in control. To achieve this, we need to build secure decentralised systems so that everyone can run their own piece of the cloud *without* having to become a sysadmin. The current tools are not really up to this task — so we first have to compose a robust and reliable software stack.

James is currently Head of Products for the Connected Homes division of British Gas where he is responsible for the development and management of new products that use data from smart meters and other sources to transform the customer relationship. He has over 20 years consumer & business experience in high change telecoms, technology and retail sectors ranging from start ups to blue chip organisations.  He has worked for companies such as Telewest, Centrica OneTel, Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Telefonica Digital.   For the past 5 years he has been active in the IOT and M2M sectors developing numerous new products and is a regular speaker and panellist at industry events.

Magic is a technology transforms your mobile device into a powerful shopping tool. Working in combination with the in-store tracking system, it allows your smartphone to automatically capture your product selections while you shop, offering the advantages of online shopping in the store. Customers can also use Magic to revisit and purchase their selections after they leave the store and receive promotions, invitations and offers. A royalty program allows shoppers to earn points just for browsing and exchange them by discounts. Magic is currently under trial in the renowned fashion retailer Giulio in Cambridge.

IoT and the Economics of Data

From the three pillars of the digital economy, 1 data, 2 software, 3 network, the last two are recognised and have economic models with value and price. Data is often in the implicit economy, with lack of transparency, and missed market opportunities. Data in IoT - They come first. Consider mineral extraction, it starts with data (sensors,Schlumberger brothers as the founders success story in this market). The same goes for Systems supervised by Control Rooms (electrical grid, transport network, communication network).

Joachim Horn founded SAM Labs in August 2013 while doing design research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. A Mechanical Engineering graduate of Imperial College London, Joachim was intrigued by the hype surrounding electronics & coding, yet frustrated by the process of making it work in reality. He decided to simplify electronics and coding the same way computers were simplified in the 70s: beyond traditional engineering and into the hands of creatives/designers who want to develop human-centred solutions. Thus, SAM was born. He began developing SAM alone in Tokyo and Brussels, before heading back to London. Co-founder and Chair of the Imperial College Design Collective, Joachim eventually formed an independent team of engineers, designers, and developers in their twenties from both London Imperial College and the Royal College of Art - bringing together two different elements for the good of human experience.

IoT, Big Data & Smart Cities – The Untold Story

Based on my TEDx talk, this keynote will challenge some established hypes around smart cities but also outline opportunities and challenges for the coming years. From the many possible angles, I will focus on the urban Internet of Things (IoT), its underlying technologies, the resulting Open Data and Big Data opportunities, and surprising insights into how citizen perceive their Smart City. I will argue that we are still far off an “Internet” of things, mainly due to mistakes committed in the technology but also business developments over the past decade. I will then expose major research and design challenges which need to be addressed to facilitate a truly connected cyber-physical world, including issues related to Big Data, Open Data and Privacy. This talk is inspired by the numerous issues I have come across with when actually trying to facilitate smarter cities through Worldsensing. Along with the untold challenges, I will outline some viable steps to address these in the hope to facilitate the emergence of truly smart cities.
