From the President.....2015 enters its final months culminating in our

annual Hoedown. This year we have Ken Bower, one of the premier national callers performing for our dancers on both FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. As of the third qtr. Council meeting we had only 27 reg-istrations for Hoedown. With less than 200 registra-tions we will lose money and the likelihood of future Hoedowns will be in doubt. Come on Houston send in your registrations.

The third quarter council meeting , August 22nd., Saturday, was held before the Frontier Squares dance. The executive board saw two new additions with the election of Linda Reeves of Frontier Squares as Secretary and Dave Goetz of the FairBees as 2nd V.P. Ms Reeves was sworn in as Secretary and will commence those duties immediately. The other elected board members will be sworn in January 1st. Dave and Carol Laufenberg return as your treasurers and Bill Jenkins and Sha-ron Stone have moved up to become 1st. VP with Nanette and Jerry Tucker returned as your Presidents. Bill and Kaye Lewis who are probably the most capable and qualified of all our officers decided to pursue their dreams of travel with their rv and declined to advance. District Direc-tors will be elected by the clubs at the fourth quarter meeting in November. This was a great meeting as we had representatives from all but two of our clubs present. The chair reminded the electorate that 2016 will bring the need for a commitment from our membership to step forward and volunteer their services to the council to ensure the continuation of our HSRDC’s leadership.

Nominations for our most prestigious awards, Dancer of the Year and Caller/Cuer of the year should be made before the late September deadline. Come on dancers send your choices in writing to the first Vice Presidents, Bill & Kaye Lewis. Any member of the HSRDC may submit a nomination (with the exception of the executive board).

Chaplain Bob Lester, who himself is recovering from heart surgery, asked the Houston members to please send him notice when one of our danc-ers is ill or we have any news to announce so he can perform his duties as chaplain.. To illustrate our

missing compassion I have to inform our distirct that Kelly Lundy, our 2006 Secretary has passed away this month of August following a massive stroke. To his son Patrick and Kelly’s loved ones the HSRDC gives its heartfelt condolences.

Those clubs in attendance who had submitted invoices for class graduations and anniversary cakes, received checks. One club had no representative at the council meeting and forfeited their check, A representative from the club must be present at the

meeting and it can not be an elected or appointed official of the council. For ex-ample, the Council Class Co-ordinator, an appointed position, can not represent their club. Or, a district director, (an elected council position), can not represent an individual club. ANY club officer or ANY member of a club may represent that club.

New undertakings discussed included an advertising campaign using bottles of

drinking water with the HSRDC logo and phone and internet numbers.

At our council meetings any member of the HSRDC may address the meeting and bring up any square dance topic or suggestion they have.

Check out the fall schedule of specials and get out and support our fellow square dancers., If you have made any memorable visits outside our district be sure and send a not to the Where N When to re-count any pleasant memories or incidents.

The 4th qtr council meeting will be on Tuesday, November 22nd. Before the Brazos Belles & Beus anniversary dane. It is anticipated this meeting will feature proposals from the Houston Callers Associa-tion to modify the lessons program which Houston callers have been using to the new program which is being adopted all over the country. The 2016 budget and other council business will be presented.

FRIENDS OF HSRDC

Dance Across Texas Into ColoradoMy name is Geri

Grieger. I have been dancing in the Hous-ton area since 1973. My husband Cecil, deceased, and I be-longed to the cypress swingers. In 1983 we visited fun valley in Colorado. It is cus-tomary to hang a club banner in the hall. So, we made one for Cypress Swingers and hung it in the dance hall along with hun-dreds of others.

I went back to Fun Valley this past June with Members of the Katy Prominaters and the Humble Wildcatters.

I was anxious to see if the ole Cypress Swingers Banner was still there, and it was. After 32 years it was right where we left it. Which just goes to prove that the club may die but the ban-ner lives on.

I signed the banner with the date 2015 and hung it back in the original spot. Maybe 32 years from now my great grand children will visit Fun Valley and say that was my great grand-parents. They loved to square and round dance.

Club ChatWhat is happening in your clubs?

District 5 continues to enjoy our Fifth Dances. Alvin and Hanger are having a lot of fun visiting back and forth, and we welcome friends from other clubs to come dance with us any fifth Thursday or fifth Saturday. The remaining fifth dances are on August 29th (Hanger’s Sadie Hawkins Dance), October 29th at Alvin and October 31st at Hanger.

Alvin Country Squares visited the Lake Jackson Promenaders on July 28th and brought our banner back home! And we brought the Lake Jackson banner home along with it. We were warmly welcomed and had a lot of fun visiting and dancing, as well as enjoying the great snacks. *** We’d like to thank all our friends who came to help us celebrate our

Lake Jackson and Hanger Squares taking banners at Alvin’s Anniversary Dance.

eleventh anniversary at our baked potato dinner and dance. The weather may have been gray and gloomy outside, but it was warm and sunny inside! Gary Sanders and Marilyn Wagues-pack were wonderful to dance to, and the hall was filled with smiles and laughter. Our sister club, the Hanger Squares, not only took back their banner but took ours home with them as well! Lake Jackson took their banner back home too. *** Our lessons are beginning now, with Coupon Nights on August 27th and September 3rd and Gary Sanders’ fun-filled teach-ing. *** We hope that many friends will join us on September 24th for our annual BARN DANCE. We will be dining on fabulous finger foods starting at 6:00 - we’ve allowed extra time for eating and visiting - and round dancers will enjoy Marilyn Waguespack’s cueing for early rounds at 7:00. Our Barn Dance will begin at 7:30 with National Caller Rick Gittelman. Please come and join us!

Bluebonnet Squares will have a Free FUN Night September 15 (Tuesday) evening from 7:30om - 9:30 pm as a kick off for Tuesday night lessons. The event will be held at the Spring Woods Methodist Church, 1711 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77090 and is open to anyone wanting to learn about square dancing. Lessons will then follow on Tuesday nights through May. Any Square Dancers are welcome to join the club on Mondays at the same loca-tion from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm. Watch the club’s web calendar for Theme and Special Dances throughout the year, http://bluebonnets.irisar.com, join us on facebook, facebook.com/blue-bonnetsquares or call, 281-740-5296. October 26th is our Halloween Dance where you can come in costume.

Houston Area Camping Squares Red, White and Blue Special in July was lots of fun. We had visitors from the Fair Bees, Katy Prairie Promenaders, Cotton Squares, Strawberry Squares and Frontier Squares. Brice Hesche and Terry Pimm called and cued a great dance.

You can’t come to the country and eat watermelon without having a Seed Spitting Contest. There were lots of laughs and good sports. There were challenges. When we went to buy watermelons all that could be found were SEEDLESS watermelons. What to do? Well, we got creative and found a substitute for watermelon seeds: DRIED PINTO BEANS. With a little “friendly persuasion” 5 ladies and 10 men signed up for the contest. The contestants were Bonnie Clements, Linda Edwards, Carol Laufenberg, Carolyn Smith and Becky Bulgreen for the ladies. The men were Rick Gaetz, Preston Smith, David Laufenberg, Nick Davidson, Brice Hesche, Steve O’Neal, Curtis JH, Jim S, Tom St. John, and Terry Pimm. The winner in the ladies’ competition was Bonnie Clements with a distance of 19’8”. In the men’s competition there was a five-way tie so we had a runoff. The winner of the men’s competition was Steve O’Neal. There were lots of laughs and “where did it land?” (It’s hard to see a pinto bean on the floor in the hall.)

We want to dance with you at Hoedown and invite you to our 4th Annual Harvest Festival Dance and Pumpkin Carving (decorating) Contest in November. Hope to see you at our danc-es. Our schedule is on our website: www.houstoncampingsquares.com You don’t have to be a camper to come dance and play with us — we’re looking forward to seeing you.

Dancer of the Year

The Houston Square and Round Dance Council has one most prestigious award. The Dancer of the Year. It is awarded at our Hoedown to the person or persons who have contributed , in the eyes of their peers, the most to promote and further the art of square dancing in the HSRDC.

This is not a longevity or popularity award nor a club achievement award. It is awarded for work promoting square dancing in the HSRDC over the previous one or two years. While work within your club is not trivial it is not the primary focus of this award. This award may be won only once in a lifetime.

The serving council executive board is not eligible for this award.

Qualifications for nomination are:1. Nominees must be an active current

member of a club in the HSRDC2. Nominees must be present at the Hoe-

down3. Nominees activities on behalf of the

Houston Square and Round Dance dancers in the preceding one, two or three years are the criteria for the award.

To make a nomination you must be an active current member of a club in the HSRDC. A short letter enumerating the qualifications of the nominees is all that is required.
