Cogeneration and Trigeneration

An Investment that pays off

Nowadays competitiveness in production processes demand better planning and design

on energy efficient systems. Retech Energy has the experience and know-how to offer

their clients tailor-made solutions based on various fuels such as Natural Gas and Biogas.

A Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant simultaneously generates electrical and ther-

mal energy. Compared to a conventional power station, a CHP plant has an overall very

high energy efficiency. Such significant energy savings will consequently lead to consid-

erable savings on operating costs.

Sustainable and decentralized generation of electricity and heat needs careful planning

and Retech Energy offer themselves as a partner in your project, no matter whether this is

a greenfield project or integration in an operating plant. Existing periphery will be care-

fully studied and optimized solutions will be provided.

Biogas - Biomass

The region and its ever increasing demand for energy still depends to a large extend on im-

ported fossil fuels and grid power but is realizing that domestic resources to convert them

into Renewable Energy are readily available. Such resources are process waste and by-

products such as organic loaded wastewater streams and solids. They typically originate

from agriculture based industries such as cassava, palm oil, sugar cane and ethanol as well

as from the food and beverage industries. Retech Energy has successfully developed pro-

jects for biogas production and its utilization, as well as for biomass combustion and heat re-

covery. Since recently also energy crops planted solely for the purpose of biogas production

became part of the National Renewable Energy Agenda.

Biogas from Organic Waste / Waste Water / Energy Crops Retech Energy offers technology or turnkey

plants for Biogas Production and Utilization

projects, in partnership with leading technol-

ogy providers and local contractors. Well

proven technology for Biogas Production has

been delivered in the past years and Retech

Energy is now recognized as a local solution

provider for both the technology partners and

the end users.

Various Methane Reactor designs, depending

on the types of Organic Loaded Waste Water,

Solids or Crops provide maximum and relia-

ble biogas yields. Most important is the suffi-

cient retention time (HRT) and automated

functions in order to achieve highest efficien-

cy and availability.

Page 16: Introduction & Mission - Retech Energyretech-energy.com/downloads/retech_brochure.pdf · Introduction & Mission Established in 2004 Retech Energy focuses on Project Development and

Biological H2S Scrubbers

The content of H2S in the raw biogas depends

on both the organic substrate and the preceding

production process. Typically the H2S will be

in a range from 0,1% to 3% (1.000 - 30.000

ppm). During combustion the H2S will convert

into SO2 and when in contact with moisture

forms sulphuric acid (H2SO4) which will lead to

severe corrosion of gas engines, burners and aux-

iliary equipment as well as air polluting emis-

sions (SOx).

The corrosion will reduce the gas engine’s lifetime. Furthermore, revenue from power

sales will be lost during overhauls and break downs. On top of that there will be sub-

stantial expenses for repairs and frequent oil changes as well as for spare parts. Due to these

facts leading gas engine manufacturers limit their warranty to biogas not exceeding 100

- 200 ppm H2S. Where required, the H2S content can be reduced to even lower levels.

Retech Energy offers a full range of biological

H2S scrubbers: from small gas cleaners to large sys-

tems for very high H2S concentration.

The scrubbers can be designed to handle any biogas

flow and H2S content in the raw biogas and thus

eliminates the corrosive gas fuelling gas engines or

burners, meeting local emission regulations and pre-

pare the biogas for upgrading systems.

A new MBR (Moving Bed Reactor) type Scrubber

has been added to the program and is already in suc-

cessful operation. The MBR system has been devel-

oped especially for molasses based distillery waste

waters with high (> 10.000 ppm) H2S content.

Gas Engine Generators

Retech Energy integrates gas engine generators into their biogas projects. Such installa-

tions suggest either power house options, containerized packaged units or simple enclo-

sures. Furthermore Co- or Trigeneration can be proposed by recovering generated Heat

from the engines.

Depending on the available amounts of

biogas a suitable engine size configura-

tion will be proposed.

Installation and connection to the plant or

to the national grid will be provided.

Retech Energy has delivered systems in-

cluding the entire gas treatment before gas

engines such as complete instrumented

gas pipelines, blowers, scrubbers, gas dry-

ers as well as the electrical installations,

transformers and switch gear. Packaged

combinations with prefabricated skids can

be supplied as well.

Retech Energy integrates leading system

manufacturers in the field of Decentralized

Energy Technology and Bio Energy. Gas

Engine Generators, packaged generator

sets and co/tri-generation units run on ei-

ther Biogas or a variety of other gases

such as Natural Gas, Landfill Gas, Syn

Gas and Combustible Industrial Waste

Gases.

Page 19: Introduction & Mission - Retech Energyretech-energy.com/downloads/retech_brochure.pdf · Introduction & Mission Established in 2004 Retech Energy focuses on Project Development and

Landfill Gas (LFG)

Landfill gas production results from chemical reactions and microbes acting upon the

waste as the rotting materials begins to break down in the landfill. The rate of production

is affected by waste composition and landfill geometry.

The frequently undefined nature of the substrate makes landfill gas production more diffi-

cult to predict and control than standard industrial bioreactors for sewage treatment.

Retech Energy has aligned with exper t par tners in order to develop LFG Energy

projects which result in power and heat sales revenue. Series of specially engineered

wells extract the Landfill Gas for ultimate use in Gas Engine Generators, for this purpose

usually delivered as containerized units for flexible and future allocations.

Page 20: Introduction & Mission - Retech Energyretech-energy.com/downloads/retech_brochure.pdf · Introduction & Mission Established in 2004 Retech Energy focuses on Project Development and

Biogas Upgrading (CBG)

Biogas is traditionally used for power and/or heat generation in engines and boilers. Raw

biogas produced from anaerobic digestion contains usually between 45% and 75% me-

thane (CH4) the balance being Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) plus

traces of other gases.

In order to utilize Biogas as CNG/LNG replacement, CO2 and H2S has to be removed.

This upgrading Process can be achieved by either membrane technology, Pressure Swing

Absorption (PSA) or by chemical separation, just to name a few alternatives.

Retech Energy will offer the most suitable process considering existing energy sources,

investment and client’s particular requirements

Water (H2O)

Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S)

Ammonia (NH3)

Page 21: Introduction & Mission - Retech Energyretech-energy.com/downloads/retech_brochure.pdf · Introduction & Mission Established in 2004 Retech Energy focuses on Project Development and

Biomass and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

Retech Energy provides technology for the sepa-

ration and sorting of Municipal Solid Waste.

Non-combustible and non-biodegradable materi-

als such as glass and metals are removed during

the sorting process and can be sold for recycling

purposes.

The organic fraction (OFMSW) serves as an excellent feedstock for anaerobic digestion

and the produced biogas will be utilized as a valuable fuel for heat and electricity genera-

tion.

RDF is a fraction of MSW and consists largely of combustible components such as plas-

tics, paper, rubber, textiles, wood and other waste, and is suitable as a boiler fuel or com-

bined with other fossil fuels such as coal.

While the utilization of MSW is clearly in the national and environmental interest, the

potential of converting the various fractions in the MSW stream to energy has motivated

Retech Energy to offer here complete technical solutions.

Optimizing existing Biogas Plants

Plants which have been in operation already for some time, not always deliver the results as

expected.

The reasons therefore can be outdated design, unsuitable construction materials, too many

manual operations, change of your manufacturing process or simply a wrong design right

from the beginning.

Retech Energy, together with a highly specialized network of technology and know-

how partners offer now an unmatchable service for repowering your plant.

Typically a fact finding tour through the plant will be the first step and than by further dis-

cussion your desired expectation will be the basic for our work.

Needless to say that existing equipment will be maintained to the maximum possible extent.

The result will be a highly efficient and automated plant with a high availability.
