Beijing Hotel Many people think that tourism as an industry in China originated in the 1980s, but this is a misconception. As a matter of fact, a more expensive tourist industry appeared in this country in the early years of the 20th century. An eyewitness to this embryonic stage of the tourist industry in China is the Beijing Hotel (known as Grand Hotel de Pekin in the old days), which has been reputed as a “living fossil” in the history of Chinese hotels. Sitting at the southern end of the Wangfujing Street, one of the busiest downtown areas in Beijing, and to the east of the Tiananmen Square in the heart of the city. The hotel consists of four structures of contrasting styles linked into a harmonious ensemble. It is a graphic illustration of the various stages of development of the hotel business in China. With its foundation first laid in 1900, the hotel has undergone four major expansions. The rapid growth of tourism round the world following World War 1 exerted its first impact on the ancient country of China in the early part of the 20th century. Most of the tourists in those days were Europeans and Americans. Seeing tourism as a Wonderful investment opportunity, a French-funded bank operating in China bought from an Italian the structure on which work had been suspended after reaching only the ground floor. The bank put in more funds and had the hotel’s five-storey red brick building completed in 1915. Later known as the ‘old building’, this structure brought the hotel very brisk business. Prospering with good management and the booming tourist industry in the world, the seven-storey French-style building with an investment of two million silver coins was added in 1917. This new structure, consisted of 105 suites furnished with central heating, telephone and toilet facilities, dining halls and kitchens, a hair saloon and a ballroom with a sprung floor. Otis elevators took guests to the bar and open-air terrace for dancing on the seventh floor. Foreign guests described it as the number one luxury hotel in the Far East. Its opening was attended by well over 800 distinguished guests who packed the lobby and dining halls to overflowing. The excellent facilities and immaculate French-style cooking in the hotel attracted large numbers of foreign tourists and local dignitaries to come and enjoy themselves. The hotel in turn made use of all this to build up its prestige through publicity in all kinds of foreign tourism guides and the only English language newspaper in Beijing, the North China Star. Among the distinguished guests who had stayed at the hotel were Marshal Ferdin and Foch of France and the well-known British author, Bernard Shaw. The Thomas Cook Travel Agency set up an office in the hotel and rented the liner Franconia to ferry tourists to China. In those days, a model of the ship was displayed in the Western dining hall and a banquet with dancing would be thrown around the model for each group of new arrivals. Gourmet parties, concerts and dances were often held, turning the hotel into a major venue of social contact for Chinese and foreign celebrities. Mr. Zhang Xueliang, the young marshal known for his bold action of detaining Chiang Kai-shek and compelling him to resist the Japanese aggression in the 1930s, often came here to enjoy dancing with young Miss Zhao Yidi. A century-old Bösandorfer piano kept here to this day recalls the hotel’s glory of those days. The hotel’s advantageous geographical location was also a great attraction to foreign visitors, and the rooms facing the west were especially sought after because they provided an excellent view of the Forbidden City. Umehara Rysanro, a noted Japanese painter, insisted on staying in a suite on the western side of the fifth floor so that he could admire from there the magnificent prospect of the old imperial palace and ancestral temple. “Looking at them I feel I could broaden my vision and enhance my artistic accomplishment’, he observed. His masterpiece, ‘The Bathing Imperial Concubine’, was done there. The hotel was also a site of important political events. General Feng Yuxiang, a Chinese patriot who staged the ‘coup d’etat of Beijing’, and Dr. Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China who came to Beijing to attend the ‘National Assembly’, once stayed here. The rooms they used are still kept to this day. The burgeoning tourist industry in china and the hotel’s business slumped after the ‘July 7 Incident’ of

71

1937 when Japan launched large-scale aggression against China. The hotel was taken over by the Japanese during their occupation of Beijing and later by the municipal government of the Kuomingtang after the war. Its business remained slack for the instability of society and the lack to foreign tourists. The People’s Republic of China founded in 1949 named Beijing its capital and offered the hotel a new lease of life. With the steady rise of the country’s international status, its diplomatic activities grew in frequency and many State and Diplomatic functions had to be held in a place with Chinese characteristics and high popularity and the hotel was selected to shoulder this important mission. Thus the plan to add a new extension to the hotel was conceived. With funding from the Government Administration Council (now the State Council), the new wing was completed in 1954 as a monument embodying the highest achievement of Chinese architecture, past and present. The 12 columns decorated with floral patterns and the five uniquely designed palace lanterns in front of the doors with intricate lattice work of the banqueting hall lend an air of solemnity and magnificence to the lounge of this new building. Mrs. Nixon, wife of the former U.S. president, was full of praise for its elegance when she paid a visit there. As a venue of important State functions of New China, the hotel stood as a witness to the glorious history of the People’s Republic in its early years. It hosted representatives to the new political consultative conference who formulated the ‘Common Program’, which served as the foundation for the People’s Republic. The banquet for celebrating the inauguration of the new republic was held in the hotel and among those attending were Communist Party and State leaders Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Dong Biwu and others. From then on until the beginning of the “Cultural Revolution’(1966-1976), all the national day receptions were either held in the hotel or with its help. The Beijing Hotel boasts a team of top-notch chefs specialized in the four major schools of culinary art of Tanjian, Guangdong, Huaiyang and Sichuan in China as well as Western and Japanese styles of cooking. It has prepared the complete banquet of Manchu and Han nationalities featuring scores of dishes and served dinner for thousands of guests at a time. It played host between the 1950s and the 1980s to visiting heads of State or government from about 50 countries including Nixon Tanaka, Khrushchev, Sukarno, Ho Chi Minh and U Nu. Several gererations of the hotel staff have done credit to the country and written a glorious chapter in the annals of Chinese hotels with their superior service and outstanding performance. Towards the end of the ‘Cultural Revolution’ and especially after China’s legitimate seat in the United Nations was restored, the country scored one diplomatic victory after another and an increasing number of foreign visitors came to China for sports events, cultural exchanges or tours, exerting great pressure on the existing facilities of the Beijing Hotel. To cope with the new demands, the hotel underwent yet another expansion with the approval of Premier Zhou Enlai. The old red brick building was pulled down and a new eastern wing was constructed on its site. Completed in 1974, the 89-metre structure was the highest building in Beijing at the time. Beijing Hotel then added building E which has many business suites and a well-equipped sports centre and fitness club for the 21st century. Now the four buildings linked together stand as mile-stones characteristic of four different periods in the development of Chinese hotels. Despite increased competition from new hotel chains entering the Chinese capital, the centennial Beijing Hotel continues to enjoy great popularity among Chinese and foreign guests thanks to its illustrious history as well as fine buildings and excellent facilities. The Beijing Hotel has been presented with the ‘Five Star Diamond Award’ by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, one of the most prestigious symbols of excellence in the global hospitality industry.

Henan Bureau of Nonferrous Metals Geology & Mineral Resources Henan Bureau of Nonferrous Metals Geology & Mineral Resources (hereinafter referred to as “the Bureau”) was established in 1959. In the past four decades, the staff of the Bureau firmly adhered to the principle of serving China’s nonferrous metals and metallurgy industry as well as the economic and social development of Henan Province. With that guiding principle, the staff have devoted themselves to exploring underground recourses and have made much achievement and provided large quantity of much-needed mineral resources for China’s modernization construction. Since its found, the bureau has done a great deal of work on the survey and exploration of the mineral resources in China, especially in Henan province: more than 1.3 million meters drilling, 30,000 meters pitting, 382 geological reconnaissance reports, 120 geophysical and geochemical exploration reports, and more than 180 academic reports of geology. It has explored 187 mineral deposits including 38 large scale ones, 69 middle-scale ones and 80 small deposits. The bureau has been awarded 18 excellent scientific achievements and 20 fruitful exploration achievements by the government. In November 2003, the newly-established party committee of the Bureau enhanced its efforts in exploring mineral resources and accordingly discovered two quality mineral deposits. The discovery was significant in Henan province. For the purpose of serving urbanization and agricultural modernization of Henan province, the bureau began to apply digital technology in urban and rural geology exploration. Against the background of insufficient fund for geology exploration, the bureau took effective measures in attracting social funds for exploration. Starting from November 2003, the bureau accumulated approximately foreign investment of USD 7 million and domestic investment of USD 100 million. In April 2004, a project was signed between the bureau and SKN, a Canadian resources company, which marked the first project utilizing foreign fund in Henan’s geology exploration industry. To tackle the problem of inadequate technical personnel, the bureau organized and established Henan Inquiry Development Centre of Nonferrous Metal Science & Technology. The center has employed 18 top retired geology experts, who serve as technical advisors for geology exploration or chief geology experts for certain technical fields. This practice has provided intellectual support for safeguarding Henan’s mineral resources. The bureau has great interest in the mineral resources of copper, gold and bauxite, planing to invest several million Yuan or more to the exploration and mining of the above mineral resources.
