Cooling Tower and Condenser /Chiller Systems
The major problems in these water systems are:-
• scale
• sludge
• bio-film/slime
• legionella and
• algae.

Non-Chemical Control of Scale, Sludge and Bio-film/Slime
Scale-X Magnetic Fluid Conditioners can control and eliminate scale, sludge and bio-film/slime deposition in water process systems.
Typical treatable scales include the following:-Calcite (calcium carbonate)Gypsum (calcium sulphate)Magnesite (magnesium carbonate)Dolomite (calcium/magnesium carbonate)

The smaller crystals have a tendency against adhesion to the surface of pipes and vessels as scale
Reduction in Surface Tension
Existing Scale Removed
Existing Scale Becomes Soft
After treatment the scale becomes soft and the liquid velocity must be fast enough to scour away the softened scale.
Pipe Insert Type MFC
Installation of a Pipe Insert Type MFC in a carbon steel pipe of a single pass cooling system. Does not require cutting or flanging of pipes. Note the wooden guides used during installation.
External Bolt On Type MFCsFor use only on non-magnetic type pipes.
Typical cooling tower efficiency Scale-X MFCs vs Chemical
treatment
Biofilm increases energy usage up to 4 times faster
than calcium carbonate
Some deposits are more insulating than others and thus have a greater impact on the head pressure and energy requirements. For example, calcium carbonate scale deposits transfer heat up to 4 times better than biofilm deposits (slime). As a result, slime increases head pressure and energy requirements and will shut down a chiller much faster than “normal” scale.

Scale thickness and increase in energy usage
Biofilm/slime can cause an increase in energy usage of up to 4 times that of calcium carbonate for the same thickness of buildup.
Biofilm reduces efficiency and
accelerates corrosion
Biofilms also plug water passages and piping, help to accelerate corrosion, and reduce heat exchanger efficiency.

Controlling Bacteria
Bacteria feed on the bio-film and scale in fluid systems.
By reducing and eliminating scale and bio-film, bacteria can be reduced and eliminated.
Scale-X Magnetic Fluid Conditioners can control and eliminate bio-film and scale when correctly applied.
Control of Algae, Bacteria and Legionella
Scale, sludge and corrosion in the fluid systems provide the nutrients for bacteria, fungus and algae to live. Legionella lives on a bacteria in the water which derives its nutrients from the scale and sludge in the water. Magnetic fluid treatment prevents scale from forming, cleans away existing scale and the water becomes cleaner.
Thus Scale-X MFC’s reduce and/or remove the food chain (nutrients) on which the harmful bacteria lives.
This can result in a significant reduction and/or elimination of the bacteria and algae problem.

MFC Control of Algae, Bacteria and Legionella in
29 Cooling Tower Systems
A survey of 29 cooling towers using magnetic fluid conditioners and not using biocides and scale inhibitors showed no towers were a health risk and Legionella
had been controlled in all towers.

Note:- Magnetic Technology recommends that the system be cleaned before the Scale-X MFCs are installed so that bacteria and algae elimination are not delayed by the removal of existing scale.
