Introduction to Addition and Subtraction of Integers Online About Me

I am Helen L. Wong and I teach at John F. Kennedy Middle School, in El Centro, California. This was my 21st year teaching the same grade level. I work with sixth graders.

About this Lesson

In this lesson I used Technology to introduce the addition and subtraction of integers using number lines and chip boards. This is one of California’s State Standards in Mathematics to be presented to students at the sixth grade level.

My Expectations

When I began the program, I only expected to become more competent with Technology as it refers to my use of it; to further develop lessons to motivate my students. Little did I realize that this was a new door opening. This door opened to a room full of opportunities that widened the spectrum of my teaching as well as my students’ learning.

I did not realize what was really in store for me. I thought I was only to learn what was necessary for me to implement a limited amount of use of technology in my classroom. Boy, was I wrong!!!

Introduction to Addition and Subtraction of Integers Online Actual Learning

There were many actual skills that I learned during the preparation and presentation of this and many other lessons that I have developed.

I have learned to use Excel to create spreadsheets. I have spent many hours, and sleepless nights learning the many ins and outs of presenting an effective lesson using the Powerpoint program, as well as including all the necessary sound wavs, and animation pics that are essential to the lesson.

I have also learned how to use various search engines, web sites, and other resources that are made available everyday on the internet. It is such a vast treasure trove of information. Along with the research, I have also learned to upload, download, save, zip, unzip and defrag with only using the computer,

its printer and a small pen-drive. CTAP Online Teaching with Technology

Introduction to Addition and Subtraction of Integers Online Successes

When I began the program, I immediately realized that if I wanted to develop an effective lesson to present to my students in which they would acquire learning, I would need to spend the a lot of time answering the following question: What do I want my students to know after they see and go through this lesson?

This lesson is a visual representation of the process of adding and subtracting integers. After this lesson, the students will be able to understand the terms in the “red” and in the “black” as well as know how to add or subtract integers by just remembering the movement of the chips on the chipboard.

Shortcomings

* It is a lesson that takes more than one 45 minute period to complete.

* Preparation of chipboards and chips are necessary for this lesson to be effective.

*Students work in cooperative groups to assist each other.

Student Data Continued

*The comparison of the Pre-test with the Post-test indicates that students acquired and ultimately learned

the processes of addition and subtraction of integers.

*In the Pre-test, students had very little knowledge of either process. Just a small percentage of students had knowledge of both processes. After the Post-test, there was a great increase in the learning growth of the majority of my students. Big Difference!

*Students also felt very proficient in their learning and in their Post-test results. They were very pleased to compare both tests and see that they grew in their learning. This promoted further motivation from the students to continue with their learning of the multiplication and division process of integers.

Introduction to Addition and Subtraction of Integers Online Lesson Revisions

•I plan to give the students more time to explore and work with the chips and chipboard as well as with drawing number lines.

• I also would like them to make a poster which would demonstrate visually and in written form their explanation of both addition and subtraction of integers.

•The Pre-test is a good diagnostic tool because it determines the amount of information that the students know before you begin the lessons and that will direct the teaching and lessons that you need to present to the students.

My Experiences in the program are never ending. It is the beginning of a new stage in my teaching career. I am no longer frustrated trying to find lessons to reach the various modalities in which students learn. My job as a teacher is to facilitate experiences or opportunities in which my students will be motivated to find out more….I also am there to provide them with the immense fountain of resources available to them for this learning process.

I began creating lessons in Mathematics because it is the easier subject to demonstrate and explain. But, now I am utilizing the resources available and am preparing lessons for Social Studies, Language Arts, Writing and many others for this upcoming year. The only thing that stops me is the lack of time that I really need to find everything possible for my lessons. But I know that as time goes by, I will become even better.

Concluding Statement

I am already looking forward to sign up for more Technology classes so that I may become more knowledgeable and prepared to teach my students what I know to them. That might be a bit difficult because some of these students have more Technological savvy than many adults. I might learn more from them than they from me. Not only that, there is a young teacher that has been challenged by what I have learned in Technology during the past 7 years. Since he was the one that first taught me how to use my first classroom computer, and now I know a bit more than he does.

I plan to utilize what I know to bring the “World” to my students so that they may have the same opportunities that other students have in better schools, larger cities, and higher socio-economic settings. I refuse to let those minor setbacks stop my students’ learning. This program has given me the motivation necessary to do this for MY

kids.
