2004

• IAEA TECDOCs on Status of Advanced Reactor Design, TECDOC-1391, 1485, 1536(2000-2004)

2009• ARIS design and first launch

2011• ARIS contains ~40 design status reports (~90% are WCRs)

2012• 1st Booklet published (Status of Small and Medium Sized Reactor Designs)

2016• New version of ARIS database launched, including MSR category

2018• ARIS contains 70 design status reports (~50% are WCRs)

2019• New ARIS template sent to ~65 organizations for almost 100 reactor designs

2020• Launch major update of ARIS - content, organization and functionality

HISTORY OF THE IAEA ARIS DATABSE

Modernization & Utilization

❑ Funding secured in 2019 (RB-WCR Team)

❑ Technical Specification developed by C.

Batra, M. Krause, T. Jevremovic

❑ Call for proposals released in Q2, 2020

❑ Selected designer started the development

of a new ARIS platform from Q4 2020

• Regular virtual meetings

• Progressing as planned

• Completion by mid of 2021

Modernization & Utilization

General Scope of Information

IAEA Advanced Reactors Information System (ARIS)

Member States interested in having ready access to the most up-to-date information about all available NPP designs, and important development trends.

ARIS is web-accessible database that provides balanced, comprehensive and up-to-date information about advanced NPP designs and concepts: reactors of all sizes and all types from evolutionary NPPs for near term deployment, to innovative concepts still under development.

General Source of Information

ARIS - Home (iaea.org)

Goal – provide up-to-date information on technical features and design

parameters of Advanced NPPs

IAEA Definition of advanced NPPs [TECDOC-936 → new NES in 2021]

Advanced nuclear plant designs - designs of current interest for which improvements over

their predecessors or existing designs are expected

Evolutionary designs - advanced designs that achieve improvements over existing

designs through small to moderate modifications, with a strong emphasis on

maintaining design proveness to minimize technological risks.

Innovative designs - advanced designs which incorporate radical conceptual changes

in design approaches or configuration in comparison with existing practice. Substantial

research and development efforts, feasibility tests, and a prototype or demonstration

plant are probably required prior to the commercial deployment

Scope of Information on Advanced Designs

ARIS can sort according to:

• Reactor Type (PWR, BWR, GCR, ....)

• Coolant

• Moderator

• Spectrum (thermal, fast)

• Thermal capacity (MWt)

• Electrical capacity (MWe)

• Design Status (e.g. conceptual, basic design, detailed

design, site specific,...., under construction, etc -- IAEA

definitions are in ARIS)

• Non-electrical applications

• Design Organization

ARIS ReportsCharacteristics of Advanced Reactors

Example of a graph report

available from ARIS, which

illustrates operating inlet and

outlet temperatures of different

types of nuclear power reactors

Other available ARIS graphs and

data reports are on:

• thermal capacity

• power density

• plant efficiency

• discharge burnups

THERPRO DATABASE TRANSFER & MODERNIZATION

❑ Transfer started in 2020

❑ Analyses of the database and compatibility with IAEA

systems and rules by T. Jevremovic and J. Kinker completed

in early 2021

❑ Internal approvals completed in March 2021

❑ POC to be developed internally using product-based

approach

❑ Funding secured in March 2021 (RB-WCR Team)

❑ Technical Specification developed by T. Jevremovic and J.

Kinker

❑ POC by Jun 2021

❑ CM in July 2021
