Our Vision: Performing music for enjoyment, friendship,
creative self-expression and musical success.
Welcome to your chosen music activity.
Whether you are a beginner, or an expert musician, we have music groups - vocal and contemporary - to suit a wide range of interests and abilities. Students involved in music have improved self-discipline and concentration, a good memory, dexterity and co-ordination as well as listening, thinking and creative skills. They display positive attitudes, perceptions and self-awareness.
As students develop their skills they can progress from an entry level group into a developmental group, and eventually to a high performance group. Entry to high performance is by audition (Grade 5 + equivalent).
Entry Level Ensembles The starting point for beginners and those with elementary skill levels
Developmental Ensembles
Students progress to these ensembles by audition or on the recommendation of their teacher/ ensemble director.
High Performance Ensembles In general, students in the High Performance programme are expected to
have a minimum of Grade 5 or equivalent.
Entry to the High Performance Programme is by audition. If you are successful with your audition you will receive a contract for the year.
There is a $30 per student per group which is used for visiting experts to come and run workshops. In addition, voice students are expected to have at least one year of experience in a PNGHS vocal group or choir.
High Performance Programme students are expected to be learning their
instrument privately in order to advance their skills within the High Performance ensemble.
1 Year nines can attend our Music Expo to see what is available to them, they can then apply for an ensemble or instrument lesson a that time. Please note that if you are learning an instrument privately - you will not be eligible to study the same instrument at school.
2 At the start of the year all students wishing to learn or join a group must
fill in a lesson application form. These are outside the music office.
3 Lessons start on Monday February 4th. You will be e-mailed confirmation,
start dates and a copy of the roster. All applications for lessons close after that date on the 12th of February.
• Instrument Music lessons take place in small groups, 30 minutes long once per week. The schedule rotates each week so students do not continuously mss the same period of class work.
We offer instrument lessons in; • STRINGS - Violin, Viola and Cello • WOODWIND - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone • BRASS - Trumpet, Tenor Horn, Trombone, Tuba • VOCAL - Singing / Voice • CONTEMPORARY - Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar • Any student may apply to learn and instrument or join an
ensemble. Places are limited and acceptance is not automatic.
• Students pay an instrument lesson fee of $120 for the year. This money
is used to extend the number of teaching hours available. If a student
withdrawals from lessons or is withdrawn from the programme after the
period of term one, we are unable to refund any instrument lesson fees.
Students who learn their instruments privately receive their ensemble
tuition for free.
• Payments to be made by end of term one either in person to the school
accounts office or via online banking to account number 03 0726
0499576 00 using student surname, form class and reference
