Key Highlights of IoT6 2018

After a successful and very impactful IoT6 in the fall of 2017 in Austin, the spring IoT6 event centered around exploring smart infrastructure solutions and technology specific to roads, construction, events, buildings, and campuses. Adopting innovative and smart infrastructure enables businesses and government to enhance asset, infrastructure, and building performance. These physical structures are transforming into intelligence, cognitive, and predictive assets through existing and emerging technologies including Internet of Things, machine-to-machine communications, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, robotics, deep learning and other evolving technologies.

Smart Infrastructure

Smart infrastructure is such a broad area of opportunity for advancement and innovation, and as such IoT6 narrowed down the scope to focus the event around core topics specific to commute, public safety, buildings and venues, and others defined around managing assets, dispatching personnel, repair and maintenance and city services. A depiction of our conference focus areas is displayed below.

Advancing Smart Infrastructure & IoT 7 #IoT6

The global economic impact or more specifically the contribution of smart technology and IoT solutions around smart infrastructure is expected to contribute a total of $1.3 Billion in financial benefit to communities, city services, and infrastructure projects around the world by 2020. While the early focus will revolve around citizen-facing services and infrastructure management, business models for business and government entities to easily adopt, manage, secure, and scale are ideal based on conference feedback.

A great bit of discussion from the event centered around the concept of collaboration across different entities for projects and funding. This included varying parties such as government officials, IT and technical managers, vendor companies, department leaders, standard bodies, and citizens or community involvement. Disparate decision-making does the opposite of working towards “open government,” and closed or siloed projects will slow progress for scaling and synergies.

Sensor Networks

From a hardware perspective, the price of tags or sensors has decreased to levels that it is not only possible but cost effective to have complete visibility into core assets and fleets. Assets may range from equipment to parts and supplies to tools and products, while fleets may include dispatching vehicles, heavy machinery, public safety vehicles, and other in-transit vehicles. The ease of placing a tag or sensor on these devices that detect motion, location, temperature, water levels, humidity, and other metrics allows for ways to improve response times, citizen services, and public safety, as well as reduce theft, locate stolen or lost assets, and aid in new business models such as insurance and financing of vital assets to provide key citizen services.

IoT that Learns

Dell’s Kirsten Billhardt (IoT Marketing Director) keynoted on the 1st evening of the summit, and dove right into the many use cases, how to make IoT really matter, and the discussion around, “IoT that Learns.” Last year we learned that Dell Technologies committed to invest $1 Billion through 2020 to enable a centralized strategy, build solution architecture, and support in go to market with IoT technologies. This also meant building a uniform partner program and focusing in on domain expertise and vertical solutions.

As IoT performs analytics and other intelligence that continuously learns and adapts, customers can achieve

ongoing better outcomes. In addition, we learned that in government and business, stakeholder alignment is critical. In some industries, this means bringing together decision-makers, influencers, and other stakeholders to communicate and better plan. Many of the challenges Dell is seeing are not coming from technical issues but rather human or stakeholder issues. These stakeholders need to understand key requirements such as onboarding, monitoring, management, and security. Ongoing learning and stakeholder collaboration also means that IT and OT must work together, which was a common theme also included in the fall 2017 conference that centered around logistics and the supply chain. Building confidence early on and demonstrating a fast ROI will drive IoT adoption.

One interesting use case Kirsten shared was specific to farming or agribusiness. And based on a long history of watching the M2M and IoT market closely, the farming industry has been early adopters of IoT solutions for asset tracking and monitoring and for crop management. In this use case based in Newark, NJ, the client (AeroFarms), innovates the growing of food products in an in-door vertical farm. With the use of Dell and VMware technologies (Edge gateways), AeroFarms is tracking 130K data harvesting points to improve farming at a 400 to 1 ration improvement. This process initiated waterless farming and improved the success of overall harvesting and growing products.

“The ability to use data and be more precise, to move

from guessing to knowing…to deliver new customer experiences, anticipate on customer

wants and deliver.”– Kirsten Billhardt, Marketing Director, Internet

of Things, Dell

Data Brokerage and Monetization

Daniel Obodovski of The Silent Intelligence presented on the much debated and discussed topic of data. Big data is now becoming dumb massive data as the industry continues to collect data and most of it not acted on or made useful for business or government purposes. Today’s data is primarily monetized by 3rd parties, specifically data brokers and Internet Giants. Daniel included examples from LexisNexis, FICO, Experian, Google, and Facebook. More recent data being tracked by these companies include things such as browsing history, purchasing habits, mobile usage, location tracking, media and content preferences, and other e-commerce statistics. IoT data is on the horizon, as we merge and share data between work, life, and play.

Data may be of interest to varying stakeholders, yet more common data buyers include financial institutions, insurers, advertisers, retailers, and for tech companies it may end up being others in the ecosystem for competitive or end-user tracking. The value of data does not come in its raw form, but rather in use case driven products and services. This means we need to refine data and productize services so there is ease of use, value is recognized, and data buyers can use the data for action.

“The best way to monetize data is not to

try to monetize data…but focus on solving problems

instead.” ---Daniel Obodovski,

CEO of The Silent Intelligence

Risk-based Intelligence Analysis

VANTIQ’s Blaine Mathieu, Chief Product and Marketing Officer, shared insights around risk-based analysis when exploring IoT solutions and smart infrastructure automation. Blaine says businesses are finally at the stage of needing support around business decisions and process decision-making. VANTIQ is helping businesses with conceptualizing the business process and business side. He says this is happening more often than conversations about the technical aspect.

The industry is no longer hanging on to POCs (proofs of concepts) or prototyping but now moving to creating real, live applications. This trend has been brought on by the case of missing components such as security or management elements that are not always apparent during a prototyping phase. Better development and decision-making can happen through design thinking and exercises such as event storming. Event storming is where you gather key stakeholders in a room, and you conceptualize event inputs that are flowing into the organization, including IT related, and determine what could you do with this information. These exercises can support in evaluating and predicting risk factors and including security from day one. Security is the number one concern for implementing IoT projects.

Edge Compute

ClearBlade and NXP took to the stage on Day 2 to discuss the future of edge computing. There is not an “either or” when it comes to cloud and edge computing, but an “AND,” says Eric Simone, CEO of ClearBlade. Edge compute offers the unique capability to compute at the device or microcontroller level and not push large data to the cloud to process later. Instead of once an hour pings, devices can compute and only alert when there is an anomaly. “Basic microcontrollers at the device level can run machine learning algorithms to help predict fault,” says Steve Tateosian, Director, IoT & Security Solutions at NXP. Security, safety, and real-time monitoring and control are some of the core benefits of edge compute.

Distributed computing can run autonomously and only send bits to the cloud that is necessary. Logistics is a great use case

that ClearBlade sees as an opportunity, and more specifically shipping and the supply chain. ClearBlade runs real-time scans using RFID, while running that on an edge compute device and only ship out products on when it is needed. Steve also discussed the unique characteristic of edge compute even when running out of power or Internet. A good example is what happened at CES during the power outage. ClearBlade’s

“Security has to be the foundation that

everything is built on from day one. The edge

provides the layer of redundancy and failover.” --- Blaine Mathieu, Chief Product and

Marketing Officer, VANTIQ

“The cloud is needed for centralization where

needed, but as devices get faster, smaller and

more capable, then edge compute becomes

important for speed and resiliency.” --- Blaine Mathieu, Chief Product and Marketing Officer,

VANTIQ

software was running on top of NXP hardware partner at their CES booth and they were running applications such as facial recognition, RFID tracking, anomaly detection using low cost microcontrollers, and more, all running while the connection and power was down.

Heard from the Advisory Board

Some of the key current and future disruptors to the industry include the following Other Key Learnings Shared at IoT6

Daniel Obodovski believes the merging of IT and OT will happen, as delays due to conflict between information technology and operational technology can be the delay factor. Speed is very important and there is no time for data discrepancies, as technology is close to the process.

Chris Rezendes states that all businesses are fundamentally enabled by infrastructure (energy, communications, water, wastewater, sanitation, public safety). $307B in weather related losses last year. But our infrastructure is at risk. Money, risk tools, are moving to a place that we are not ready for as we introduce cyberphysical risk as a factor. We need to answer questions such as…Are our systems safe and secure and can I prove it?

Bob Egan states that IoT is driving AI. We are building learning enterprises. Learning infrastructure – being more predictive and being more practical.

Adam Stein says citizen development is on the rise, and businesses and government need to arm themselves. Give people the ability to develop the information, as they are the ones interacting with the information.

Stephanie Atkinson believes the most disruptive aspect to future smart infrastructure is the unique and emerging technologies coming together, as outlines below in the final section of this executive summary. AI and IoT come together to bring intelligence to the device and next level analytics.

CXO Perspectives

During a CXO panel at IoT6, we were graced with perspectives from panelists in a range of industries including government, higher education, manufacturing, and transportation. Some of the key projects and opportunities our panelists discussed include the following:

Tom Spoke of Trek Bicycles who leads their ERP solutions and is based in Wisconsin discussed evaluation IoT and automation solutions to support their sales office across the world.

Schneider’s (formerly Schneider National) Director of Supply Chain Solutions, Alex Khan discussed focusing on commercial development and using real-time visibility and predictive analytics to help grow the business in multiple areas of their company including intermodal, trucking, warehousing, and logistics.

John Martin, the CIO of Georgia Department of Natural Resources sees his department as microcosm of a city and was interested in IoT as they look at their strategy to develop the country’s first smart park.

Oral Roberts University’s Peter Kovaleski, who is the Senior Director of IT Operations says they are using Garmin wearables for student fitness tracking and exploring the use of data for students

to track and help with education. They are also using virtual reality and augmented reality technology with partner EON Reality for a global learning center to provide education online with more personalized experiences.

The Pieces Coming Together

As we dig further into various IoT solutions, many of the siloed conversations and research learnings are now being discussed in a more oderly and working together fashion. First let’s review some of the key buzzwords we continue to hear across the IoT sector and smart infrastructure. On the left we see a number of buzzwords, and of course many were discussed at IoT6 this spring. These pieces on the left are coming together and in fact many of the machine learning advancements means that artificial intelligence will be playing a role in conjunction with data analytics to advance highly intelligent assets that may learn and act without the support of a computer or robot. On the right-hand side, we have the emergence of additional new technologies and applications, as well as threats to consider as we implement IoT solutions in government and business.

The industry is in desperate need of data scientists and engineers to help manage, manipulate, and structure artificial intelligence technologies and implement business objectives. This will bring a host of new institutional and educational programs to support our younger generation of technologists coming into the workforce. Other advancements or topical discussions on the right include areas of security or access control, and automation of simple decision-making whether that be within a software structure, a communications or call center response, or using voice to automate and act.

In addition, some advancements on the left will drive further innovation on the right. While 5G brings new possibilities of embedded hardware and faster processing, machine vision and visual intelligence along with replicated intelligence systems supports advancements in operational efficiencies and incorporate intelligence with many unforeseen applications.
