"He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards hewas hungry." And no surprise! That's an incredibly long timeto fast. Undoubtedly Jesus' physical and emotional strengthwould have been extremely weak afl:er enduring such a mara-thon of abstinence. And isn't it interesting that the "tempter"should choose to appear at this particular moment? Whenbread must have soiuided better than ever, the devil comes andtests Jesus, saying, "Command that these stones becomeloaves of bread."
How hard it must have been to resist! Surely, Jesus could havecaved in. He could have shown the devil his power-and had abite to eat while he was at it-but he didn't. Instead, Jesus re-lied upon the word of God, and battled the devil by holdingfast to the truth. "One does not live on bread alone, but onevery word that comes forth from the mouth of God."
What an excellent model this provides for us. We too facetemptation of various kinds and degrees. As the first readingfrom Genesis reminds us, the "cunning" serpent has beenslithering around hutnanity from the begimiing of time. Evenwhen we have all that we need, the devil makes us want more,or want different, than what we have. Today's Gospel callsSatan "the tempter" for good reason. He tempts us to breakGod's law as Adam and Eve did when they ate from the tree"in the middle of the garden." But Jesus shows us the rightresponse by battling the devil with the truth of God's word.Whatever temptations might beset us, there is power in cling-ing to the truths that we fu'id in Scripture. In our moments oftrial, may we have the strength to claim these truths as ourown and, like Jesus, defeat the deceit of the devil.

Make the most out of Catholic Spring TrainingOne way to think of Lent is as Spring

help.Prudence - the
thinking virtue. Ithelps us live wisely iiithe middle groundbe?ween fear andrecklessness. For
example, we can takeout a mortgage to buya home that"s comfortable
but we avoid going imoexcessive debt to impress others.'Prudence helps us live with wisdom.
Justice - the "play fair" virtue. Welearn early to "play fair" by sharing toysand treats. Fairness is a basic ingredientof justice. Justice thrives when we give
what is due to God and others.
Temperance - the "just right"virtue. It is possible to have
too muc)?i of a good thing, such as too much food
or drink or watchingtoo much teleyision.
aJaemperance, alsocalled "moderation,"is the virtue that
helps us find thebalance. It keeps us
from becoming tooattached to the
world.
Fortitude - the
fearless virtue. This
virtue helps us to standfirm agains? fear and

strengthens our resolve to resisttemptation, overcome personalweala'iesses, and make saci'ifices forwhat is good.

]]And the Lord said, lLighten Up ...' "With all the fighting and suffering in the world
around us we can sometimes forget the joy ofbeiiig a child of God. I?ry these tips to lift yourspirits:
"Therefore I commend mirth, liecause there isnothing good for man under the surr except eatingand drinking and mirth" (Ecclesiastes 8:15).Laughter is like changing a baby's diaper. Thechange isn't permanent, but it makes everythingokay for a while. Eacli day, try to find at least one

thing that makes you smile. Even the act of lookingcan help.
?Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again:Rejoice! . .. I Tave rxo anxiety at all" ( Pliilippians 4:4,6a). St. Pau] wrote that while he was in prison -not a place conducive to hope. I Te knew that likethe most loving father, God wants us to be happyand carefree. All we l'iave to do is tmst him. Tum
your worries over to tbe Lord and know that hewill handle them better than you can.
fromcripture John 9:1-41,
The sight of faith
in tl'iis Gospel reading, ?esus cured ablind man on the Sabbath by makingclay and smearing it on the man"seyes. 'Ihis cure wastwo-fold; tl?ie man receivedboth physical sight and thesight of faith. As he wasbeing questioned by thePharisees, his undastandingof Jesus moved fromknowing him as simply a"man", to acdaimiiig himas a propl'iet, arid finally, toworshipping him as the Son of God.While the faith of the cured t'nan
prog, ressed, the spiritual sight of thePharisees did just the opposite. 71heiranger blinded them to tbe tmth-that
the curing of the blind man wasGod's work. F?irious that Jesus failedto observe the Sabbath, they refused
to believe tl'iat the man had beenborn blind and was
miraculously healed. In baptism, weare given the gift
of faith-the
ability to "see"God arid our
life in relation to
l'xis loving plan. The longer we follow Jesus and
learn from him, the better weunderstand him. The more we turnaway from sin, the sharper our"visioii" becomes.

March 1- Ash Wednesday. The firstdry of Lent. Ashes from the burntpalms of the previous Passion Sundayare bl.essed and placed on the foreheadsas a sign of penance.

March 18 - St. Cyril of Jemsalem(386). Born around 315 and raised in

Q Why do we giveA& things up for Lent?We give up things for Lent to help us
grow closer to God. We imitate Jesus, who spent foxly days in the desert, fasting
and praying. "By diesolemn forty days ofLent the Church unites
herself each year to themystery of Jesus in thedeseit" (Catechism of theCatholic Church, #540).Wbenever we think of
our sacrifice - wl'ietlier it is a favorite
food, pastime, or fifteen minutes ofsleep - we are reminded of Christ'ssacrifice of love for us.
C,iving things up for Lent is also anexpression of penance for the wrongwe've done. The forms of penance theChurch recommends are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (charitable deeds). To beeffective, however, tl?iese acts must comefrom a place of sincere repentance."Jesus' call to conversion and penance ...[aims atl the conversion of the heart,ii'iterior conversion" (CCC #1430). Itinvolves turning our hearts back to Godand away from that which separates usfrom him. "Going without" purifies usand helps us resist temptation moreeasily.
