It took 3 days to

extinguish the fire.

Battling the fire

was hindered by downed power

lines, high winds and low water pres-

sure due to the hurricane. Most of

the area had been evacuated prior to the hurricane making land. No injuries from the chemical smoke were

reported. According to the DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality) no harmful chlorine

levels have been detected.

The consequences of this fire is that there may be a shortage on chlorine tablets for some

months to come. We have already seen price increases.

Apartment complexes, hotels and other commercial water features use a lot of chlorine

tablets. Since 2020 seems to be a year of changes, (intended and unintended) maybe its

time to change the way these commercial pools and spas are maintained.

Christine Gains, the vice president of the San Antonio chapter, is retiring after 30 years in the indus-

try. We will all miss her she has been a big part of the IPSSA family in San Antonio and Region 9.

The San Antonio chapter president Jorge Martinez presented Christine with a plaque of appreciation

for her service as the vice president for the

last 4 years.

When asked what she would like for a going away gift, she said that a Mountain Laurel

shrub was her favorite and she would be re-minded of her time in IPSSA every time she

saw it. She plans on planting it at her new

home.

Christine is relocating to Indiana, were she will take

care of her 94 year old mother. But she did tell me she will come to visit, and keep in touch with all the

friends she has gained in her time in Texas.

Fort Worth Chapter Project Complete

The Fort Worth Chapter of IPSSA is proud to announce the completion of its Outreach

Project for 2012. The important need to help was brought to the attention of this

chapter when one of its longtime members, David Llewellyn of Pool Patrols was diag-

nosed with MS. David was hoping to install a pool in his backyard so that he would be

able to complete his daily physical therapy at home instead of a long day of commut-

ing back and forth to a facility.

KEEP CHLORINE AND PH FIGHTING FOR YOU, NOT AGAINST YOU

Who knew chlorine and pH are so important when it comes to sanitizing pool water and killing germs? We do and so do the experts at the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Chlorine and pH can both pack a punch; just make sure they’re fighting for you, not against you. Here’s

how to get and keep them in your corner.

DROWNING REPORT FOR 2013

Every year, CPSC compiles an end of summer drowning report to track the tragic toll of child drownings nationwide. According to information

reported by the media and compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation, more than 200 children under 15 years of age drowned in a pool or

spa during the 2013 summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends; 143 of those children were under the age of 5.

REGION 12

MEETING

REGION 9

MEETING

Please accept this letter as my official resignation from the Board. It will be effective at the conclusion of the September 9th meeting.

It has been an honor to serve the Texas pool and spa industry since 2007. Serving as a Aquatic Professionals Education Council board member (IPSSA), a 2 term Vice-President and President, guiding APEC through the transition into The Texas Pool & Spa Coalition, I have had

the great pleasure to work with and meet an outstanding group of men and women who form the backbone of a fantastic industry.

As has been my plan since the recovery/transition of APEC, once a new president was elected and my tenure as past-president expired, I

would tender my resignation. The extension of our terms notwithstanding, I believe that plan has come full circle.

I will, of course, make myself available to the Board as needed, whenever and wherever possible.

Thank you to all for your continued efforts in protecting the Texas Pool & Spa industry.

Sincerely,

Will Ainsworth

HAVE YOUR SICK ROUTE CARD ON FILE

Sick route coverage is provided in order to help protect chapter members from losing

valuable weekly service accounts and revenue, in the event of a qualifying personal

injury or illness. Fellow chapter members will band together to provide emergency cov-

erage of all or a portion of your service route, helping to maintain the route and protect

your livelihood. This coverage is (by necessity) limited in scope and is intended to be

used as a “safety net” only in the event of legitimate illness, injury or emergency.

One of the great things about IPSSA is the

underlying commitment to help others in

the industry.

After all, this association was created on

the principle of sick route coverage. But,

many members go above and beyond sick

route, helping other members and their

communities. These are IPSSA Heroes.

FREE LIFE SAVING MESSAGE DOORHANGER

Hello fellow IPSSA Members;

I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler temperatures. The cooler

fall weather has advantages and disadvantages. Pool water will

be more manageable as the water temps recede into the 70’s

and below. The down sides are storms and fall leaves which will

impact our pools in negative ways. Spring and Fall are the busy

times of the year, so remember you’re on your own, but you’re

not alone.

Should any of our members have any questions, feel free to call

me, the other board members or other IPSSA members for sup-

port and information. Fingers crossed, maybe, we can start up

member meetings by the end of the year. We have members who

are older and other members with families, so some members

do not want to chance being sick for weeks. Everyone’s situation

is unique. I would not want to risk some-

one’s health and livelihood. Most people

would rather be safe and well. With that

being said, have a good month.

Thank yall for your continued support.

Respectfully

Paul Nelson
