Rahana reports: Based on the order of Tehran’s Prosecu-

tor, all families of political prison-ers can only visit their loved ones by phone or in visitation booths (behind glass windows and phone conversations) from now on. Per Kalameh Reports, although regu-lar prisoners are allowed to have in person visitation with their fam-ilies but political prisoners will not be granted such privilege. Here-after, the families are only allowed visitation in person with the pris-oners by a special order from the Prosecutor. It is being said that the reason for such measures is to control and prevent the state-ments and letters that has been coming out of the prisons.

The hard-line spiritual mentor of Iran’s president has made

a rare public call for producing the “special weapons” that are a mo-nopoly of a few nations, which represents a veiled reference to nuclear arms. The Associated Press on Monday obtained a copy of a book written by the spiritual adviser, Ayatollah Muhammad Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, in which he wrote that Iran should not deprive itself of the right to produce these “special weapons.”

Iran’s government, as well as its clerical hierarchy, has repeatedly said that the country is not seek-ing to develop nuclear weapons, as the United States and other Western nations suspect.

The United Nations Security

Council last week imposed a fourth round of sanctions in re-sponse to Iran’s refusal to halt ura-nium enrichment, which it main-tains is only for a civilian nuclear energy program, but which could conceivably be used to produce material for nuclear weapons.

The new United Nations sanc-tions call for an asset freeze of 40 additional companies and organi-zations in Iran, including 22 in-volved in the nuclear program or developing ballistic missiles.

Mr. Mesbah-Yazdi’s hard-line views have had a strong effect on President Mahmoud Ahmadine-jad of Iran, who has shown him more respect than he has any oth-er senior cleric.

According to Human Right Activists News Agency

(HRANA), Over 900 people were arrested on the one year anniver-sary of protests against the fraudu-lent Iranian Presidential election. According to HRANA reporters, at least 300 of the detainees are women and their families are una-ware of their situation. Security forces prevented gatherings by families of the detainees by clos-ing “Shohada ye Jandarmery” and “Kargar Jonoubi” intersections lo-cated in front of the Tehran police headquarters. It is worth mention-ing that so far the family of at least 15 women detainees who did not have identification cards at hand were asked to submit their docu-ments. The families of the male

detainees were told by authorities to refer to the security police office today to inquire on the situation of their loved ones. This morning at 2:00am, 30 detainees ranging from 20-25 years old were driven with a van to Enghelab Square and released there.

Activist gathered on June 12, 2010 to mark one-year since the disputed election. The event host, Iranian Progressive Youth, organized “Cycle 4 Iran” — a walk & bike-a-thon through Amsterdam. Participants

wore t-shirts demanding the release of Iran’s prisoners of conscience, attached posters to the back of their bikes, backpacks, shirts, painted themselves green, and biked alongside a mini-mobile billboard (also be-ing biked through the city!) highlighting Bahareh Hedayat. Other prisoners of conscience highlighted at the Netherlands event include the 7 Baha’i leaders and Mohammad Amin Abdollahi, who faces execution.

Iran Ranks 104 out of 149 in Global PeaceIndex 2010 Source: PeyvandJune 12, 2010

The results of the Global Peace Index (GPI) for 2010

suggest that the world has be-come slightly less peaceful in the past year.

The GPI, which gauges ongo-ing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society and militarization in 149 countries, registered over-all increases in several indica-tors, including the likelihood of violent demonstrations and perceptions of criminality. In some nations, an intensifica-tion of conflicts and growing instability appears to be linked to the global economic down-turn in late 2008 and early 2009.

This is the fourth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). It has been expanded to rank 149 independent states and updated with the latest-availa-ble figures and information for 2008-09. The index is com-posed of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from re-spected sources, which com-bine internal and external fac-tors ranging from a nation’s level of military expenditure to its relations with neighbor-ing countries and the level of respect for human rights.

The average score for the coun-tries surveyed in the 2010 GPI is 2.02 (based on a 1-5 scale), a slight rise (less at peace) com-pared with last year, when the average stood at 1.964.

With the opening of FIFA Soccer World Cup in South

Africa, “June 12” human rights group organized a campaign to draw attention to the plight of po-litical prisoners in Iran by putting pictures of some of the prisoners on city buses in Johannesburg.

Pictures of Behrouz Javid Tehra-ni, Mohammad Oliayaifard, Shiva Nazarahari and others were seen on city buses which are supposed to run in the city for at least a month.

Since the opening of the games coincided with the anniversary of the controversial presidential elec-tion in Iran that has led to wide-spread protests and fierce govern-ment crack down, the “June 12” group decided to appear at the international event in South Afri-

ca with banners in support of the growing number of political pris-oners languishing in Islamic Re-public prisons.

To draw attention to “human rights violations in Iran”, the group has also prepared a video clip of their presence in Johannesburg which was posted on You Tube. The “June 12” group is planning to stage demonstrations in front of the Islamic Republic embassies in 87 cities across the globe on the anniversary of June 12 elections of 2009.

Iranian authorities have arrested scores of protesters in the past year to quell the turmoil which has gripped the country since the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last June.
