SUPPORT LOCAL SPORTS

Dear Future Donors My name is James Imes III. I am the newly appointed Athletic Director of the N.B. Mills Athletic Association. I have been coaching youth sports in the Statesville area for 7 years now, and it is my passion to teach life lessons to our youth through the medium of sports. The NBMAA is made up of parent volunteers that come together with the common goal of helping our students gain confidence, learn discipline, and become better students and individuals through athletics. As we continue to do fundraisers to raise money for our program, we would also like to turn to our community for support. We are seeking donations to purchase equipment, such as helmets, shoulder pads, football pants, uniforms, mouthpieces, balls, etc. In particular we must upgrade helmets and shoulder pads as a safety precaution for our student-athletes.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOU CONTRIBUTION

Emmanuel Teasley aka Billy Krash would’ve turned 21 on April 8th, instead he was killed last year just shy of his 20th birthday on April 2nd. He was a member of Karolina Mafia an independent rap group. He also was expecting a son who was born 28 days after he was murdered. Billy Krash was a tri-ple threat in the industry. He was originally from Hartwell, GA. and the way he sung, danced, and rapped... He was one of a kind. He co-produced the beat to Karolina Mafia’s Rokkstar Lyfe. Although he is not with us physically we still carry him with us in spirit. Although there is now only 2 members left Reggie Goodson aka Big Reggie and Tyree Fritz aka Reep. Karolina Mafia will always be 3 Da Hardway!

Entrepreneurship, Growth & Business Development

In 2006, PO started started his path to entrepreneurship when he created Mademan Entertainment. He figured that instead of creating music and attempting to get re-cord deal, he would create his music and distribute his products independently. The original Mademan Entertain-ment members include Scoota Woo, CaliCoby, LB, Troop and Block.

Following the release of Krazie featuring Slick Da Prince, Mademan Entertainment became Known In Mooresville, Troutman, Statesville and Charlotte. Thinking business, PO reached out to a friend in Beckley West Virginia and together, they were able to spread the brand and music into the West Virginia market. “We did events in Beckley for years. They showed us so much love,” says PO “The High light of my performances was when I was promot-ing “Dinner Dates. It seemed like everywhere we went, they already knew the songs.”

As PO continued to grow Mademan Entertainment, he wanted to change the way the company was perceived in the public. He started performing with a band and held a few benefit events with the sickle cell awareness founda-tion. And he invested into video production to ensure that the public would be able to view Mademan Entertainment as if it were a major record label,

Now with 10 years of experience, PO is adding madefits.com to his business portfolio. The idea to start madefits.com came from the concept of everyone making cloth-ing that highlighted their lifestyle. “If I feel like it, I will make a shirt that says, Through Proper Planning and execution, I can do anything.” says PO.

“Most people think an online business is easy. It’s not. I’ve learned so much about team building, business structuring, effective marketing, and myself from building madefits.com.”

Staesville native, Pervis Gillion, has done something that many musicians have been unable to accomplish, and that is to make a career out of music. For most people, music is a hobby or “just something I do for the church,” but for Pervis, music is a way of life.

Pervis Gillion began playing music at Bible Way Church No. 1, in Statesville, at the age of 13, under the guidance of Darryl Corpening. “He was the first person to sit me down and teach me about my drum rudiments. I always say, that I would not have accomplished what I have without him” says Gillion. “My uncle, Tony Gillion, who was the Minister of Music at Bible Way Church No. 1., would play the piano at the house and I would be outside beating a bucket. I al-ways wanted to be good enough to play with him.” Pervis recalls Mr. Willie J. Beatty helping him land his first drum-ming job at St. John Church, in Statesville. This was a job that he held throughout high school.

Upon graduation, Pervis ended up going to Georgia to play with two of his cousins, Michael and J.J. Minor. They played at various churches, as a gospel group called Psalms 150 and Pervis became known as a “Pocket Drummer.” “Pocket Drummers establish the beat and the pocket is the most important thing to me” says Gillion. When his cousin, Mi-chael was deployed to Korea, Gillion met Rudy Collins and began playing with a group called Kaya, which became Rudy and the Crew and was later called ATL Dreamvision. He was then recruited by the KlassBand Brotherhood, who are nationally recognized for their hit, “Sugaa Shack.” “I have been blessed to play with National artists, such as: CeCe Penniston, Lenny Williams, and Theodis Ealy, just to name a few. I’ve have opened up and shared the stage with Earth Wind and Fire, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Mon-ica, Eric Benet, the Temptations, Fantasia, SOS Band, Mel Waiters, Betty Wright, Avant, and many others.

“You have to think higher than your surroundings, that will allow you to accomplish anything you desire.”

When I moved to North Carolina in 2014, it became the sixth state that I have lived in. The first year was spent in Mecklenburg County, and then I moved to Iredell Coun-ty. The move was purely motivated by wanting to shorten my commute time. Not being very knowledgeable of the area, I lived in apartment for a while. What surprised me was how many people living here are from my home state of New York. It may sound silly, but finding out that Harris Teeter carries the brand of hot dog from my home town was a key indicator that I would be OK here. If they would only carry the right mustard and New England style buns, I would be ecstatic.

Every time I was out and ran into a fellow NYer, the first question was always “Do you like it here?”, and the answer was always “It takes some adjusting, but it’s a good place to be.” Then we would share the location of the best piz-za we’d found, and where to find pastrami, before talking about what brought us here (a job, the weather, a spouse). These conversations always included agreement that not having to brush snow off our cars most of the year is a wonderful thing. I had found a bit of home here.

As I went more places, and met more people, the combi-nation of people who grew up here, and people who had moved here, made it very interesting. Like everywhere, I found places I love to go, and places you won’t catch me in ever. I’ve made good friends, and met people I hope never to see again. The balance is in favor of places I like to go and good friends though. And I did something I nev-er thought I would do: I became active in a political par-ty, now holding two positions. Through those positions, I have met dozens of wonderful, bright, and determined people. I feel invested in what happens here, and happy to be part of influencing the future of the county.

I suspect there are some behaviors here that will always seem “foreign” to me, such as the discussion of religion in public. Where I grew up, polite conversation excluded sex, politics, and religion. Aside from that, most of what I am getting used to are positive things: people talking to

strangers in public, the friendly nature of people to each other, the affordable real estate, and so on. Between the respectable number of local events, and being a few hours’ drive from several metropolitan areas, there are a lot of op-tions for recreation. Considering the number of places, I have lived, perhaps the strongest statement I can make is to say that I have bought a house here, and don’t even want to discuss opportunities that require relocation when the recruiters call. When my friends ask me how I am ad-justing to living in the South, I tell them that aside from the embarrassment of HB2 (& attempts at similar oppression), this is a good place to be, and that we are working on fix-ing those problems.
