IRIS-T SLM

Modular Ground-Based Air-Defence System

Diehl Defence, a technology leader and supplier of modern guided missiles, has developed an efficient, modular, thus customer-specific solution meeting all requirements of ground-based air defence – IRIS-T SLM. This surface-to-air missile system has been optimized for 360° protection of objects, areas and mobile troop units in current and future mission scenarios in mobile and stationary 24/7 operation, in all weather conditions, with minimum personnel and least logistic effort.

Free choice of system componentsWhether reconfiguration, modernization or expansion of weapon systems – the modular system architecture and the hardware-independent fire-control system provide utmost flexibility. There are plenty of options particularly in the selection of system elements for target acquisition and tracking, warfare and weapon employment. Modern mul-ti-function radars for display of the air situation and target

acquisition can be integrated into the IRIS-T SLM air defence system. Individual system elements can be selected to replace or supplement older system elements in existing air defen-ce systems. Thus, armed forces no longer have to rely on a single manufacturer‘s product but instead can choose the best equipment available on the market.

Short- to medium-range protection with a single mis-sile systemIRIS-T SLM is the first system allowing 360° protection, from short to medium range, with just one missile. A wide variety of threats can be engaged within this range spectrum. Pos-sible targets include modern fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and tactical attack missiles as well as short-range ballistic missiles. Even helicopters and aircraft featuring small radar cross sections and extreme maneuverability can be hit directly. High hit probability is achieved through precise con-trol of the missile during terminal approach by a high-resolu-tion, imaging IR seeker rendering countermeasures, including blinding lasers, ineffective.

Command and fire control systems

Low cost of operationSystem design focuses on permanent system operation. Highly automated processes permit operation with minimum person-nel. Energy-efficient sensor and signal processing electronics reduce the failure rate and logistic support requirements despite permanent operation.

IRIS-T SLThe core of the new air defence system is the IRIS-T SL gui-ded missile system – a consequent refinement of the IRIS-T air-to-air guided missile used on modern fighter aircraft with eleven air forces worldwide. The upgraded IRIS-T SL version is specifically designed for ground-based operation by the German Air Force and features exceptional range (up to 40 km). A data link transmits target data from the ground radar to the missile. The imaging IR seeker provides an additional highly precise target data source for accurate precise terminal approach with maximum direct hit probability. The combined advantages of both sensor technologies enable the unique performance of IRIS-T SLM under all weather conditions.

Under contract by the German Ministry of Defence, Diehl Defence developed the new IRIS-T SL surface-to-air guided missile as part of the German Armed Forces‘ Tactical Air De-fence System. IRIS-T SL is designed for easy integration into various existing and future air defence systems through links

to command and fire control systems via standardized, soft-ware-based interfaces. Furthermore, all functionalities for employment of the IRIS-T SL missile were implemented in the related launcher allowing greatest flexibility, regardless of the employed sensor and command systems.

Another logistic advantage is provided by the storage, trans-port and launch canister for the IRIS-T SL missile. All IRIS-T-SL missiles are delivered, transported, stored and finally loaded to the launcher for firing in the canister.

IRIS-T An interesting option is available for all armed forces with IRIS-T inventories. Requiring no modification, this high-per-formance, air-to-air guided missile can be integrated, in conjunction with the associated IRIS-T SLS launcher, into a ground-based air defence system. It is capable of engaging the same targets as IRIS-T SL at short range, e.g. for object protection. Thus, one and the same missile can be employed in two different roles, in an air-to-air and a surface-to air version. Under contract by the procurement agency Försva-rets Materielverk (FMV), Diehl Defence equips the Swe-dish armed forces with IRIS-T SLS systems. Highly mobile tracked vehicles serve as platforms complemented by a sensor-based integrated network as well as a new command and control system.

Sensors

Plug & Fight system componentsBoth missile systems were successfully tested in numerous tri-al campaigns with a wide range of sensors, including firings at target drones. Given a multitude of possible sensors, the radar systems GIRAFFE AMB from Saab Electronic Defence Systems (EDS) and the Ground-Based Multi-Mission Radar from the Australian manufacturer CEA Technologies were employed. Further multi-function radars such as G4A, TRS4D, Kronos 3D and GM200 are currently being investigated at customer‘s request. Electro-optical sensors can be used as well.

Diehl Defence developed a fire control system as a central element for integration into various command and control systems. Apart from the proven command and control systems of SAAB EDS, TERMA AS und AIRBUS Defence & Space, Diehl´s fire control system can also be emplo-yed with systems of other manufacturers. For mobile use, all system elements are delivered on a standardized 10‘ or 20‘ ISO frame, allowing employment in almost all vehicle types with sufficient load capacity operative in the armed forces as well as in future vehicle generations. Remote operation of all system components is possible as well.
