Ika Peiler - Conformation
Judge IWCC BC Regional
Specialty
Our first Irish Wolfhound came to
us in January of 1982, and Ulli
and I registered our prefix
Knocknarea with the Irish Kennel
Club soon after. We were
fortunate to find fantastic
mentors in Elizabeth C. Murphy
(Carrokeel), Jim Behan
(Bearnabui) and Tony Redmond (Atharne) who not only
introduced us to the wonderful world of showing and
breeding Irish wolfhounds but became lifelong friends.
They instilled in us a sense of responsibility to always aim
for a typical wolfhound, sound in body and mind. We were
lucky that at the time when we started there were many
great kennels around with excellent hounds to train our
eyes on.
Our first litter arrived in 1984. We soon improved on our
foundation stock, and our first homebred Specialty BIS
winner was Knocknarea Briciu who won the 1988 IW Club
of Ireland Specialty under Cynthia Boissevain.
We competed until 2009, winning ten breed Specialty BIS
- six in Ireland and four in the UK. Two of the successes
stand out the most: the English Club show 1998 with that
year’s Crufts BOB winner Juxtalia Macmathuna of
Knocknarea, and then again in 2002 with his son,
Knocknarea Phelix. In that period we also had four BOS
Specialty wins, twice taking the double. We had numerous
Hound Group winners and several BIS at All Breed shows.
Other achievements include Runner-Up Show Dog of the
Year and five Annual Champions (Top IW Ireland). In all
we bred twenty-six litters, with our last litter arriving seven
years go. Twenty Knocknareas became champions in
their new homes abroad.
I started judging Irish wolfhounds at Championship level in
1993. Although I have a judging license to judge some
other hound breeds I prefer to stick with “my” breed and
consider it a great honour to be invited to judge at your
show. I am looking forward to seeing all your beautiful
hounds – and their owners. Thank you for allowing me to
go over them. Please, show them on a loose leash.
Roger Tebbutt -
Conformation Judge IWCC Specialty
I have lived with Irish
Wolfhounds for forty years.
Debbie and I have had
some notable successes in
the show ring, including major hound group wins and Best
of Breed at Crufts. To have won the Graham Shield three
times for Best in Show at the Irish Wolfhound Club
Championship Show (UK) is particularly thrilling.
We have bred and owned several influential stud dogs; it
is wonderful to have owned and exhibited UK champion
hounds of the caliber of, among others, Yankeedoodle,
Jupiter and Galileo, and to see the extent to which their
bloodlines have spread through their progeny.
I love to watch fit, agile hounds hunting in rough country,
and we are fortunate that the farm is a good environment
to raise and exercise our hounds. I am constantly aware of
the history and purpose of our breed, and keep in mind
Captain Graham’s vision of the hound when I am judging.
In addition to my UK appointments, I have judged
wolfhound specialties in several European countries and
in North America; I also had the pleasure of judging our
second breed, Bassets Fauve de Bretagne, at Crufts
2010.
I have a huge affection for BC, so I am really looking
forward to meeting you and your hounds in September
Sid Wood – IWCC BC Regional Specialty
Sweepstake & Jr. Handling Judge
For as long back as I can remember, I had always known
there would be Irish Wolfhounds in my life. I never read
the stories about them, yet somehow I knew they would
be in my future. I clearly remember having my mother
take me to an All Breed show when I was 13 years old,
and seeking out the one lone Wolfhound entry. I
approached the ex-pen he was in, and stood eyeball to
eyeball with him - It was like magic! That moment
clinched the deal for me, and I knew the day would come
when I would be raising them. In February 2002, Kevin
and I brought our first hound home – Karontara Boba
Fett. Less than 2 years later, we acquired my foundation
bitch, Jadzia Freesoul of Castlekeep. Despite the
heartache that can come with this breed, we have never
looked back, and cannot imagine life without
Wolfhounds. I have been breeding under the Arahu prefix
since 2008. While still fairly new to this breed, I am lucky
to count among my closest friends breeders who have
been studying the breed for much longer. It has been a
great privilege to learn from these friends and mentors,
and to meet so many more wonderful and knowledgeable
people along the journey. One of the great things
about learning is that it never ends.
Right from our first hound, we have been involved with
lure coursing. I admire nothing more than a hound who
can both excel in the ring, and tear up the coursing field as
well! I also admire the people who compete in both
realms. While conformation showing is important for
maintaining the breed standard, it is on the field where the
14
hounds have the real fun and take my breath away. It is
unfortunate that so few hounds have the natural inclination
to want the chase the bag. I have been waiting many,
many years for another coursing hound!
One of the primary focuses I have for my hounds is to rear
them as naturally as possible through diet, natural
remedies, clean living, and minimizing stress. It is my firm
belief that each generation becomes more robust and
vital. It may not be the answer to the many health
concerns within our beloved breed, but I do believe that
each successive naturally-reared generation can withstand
and fight disease better than the previous generation, and
enjoys an excellent quality of life right up to the very end. I
strive to breed and raise correct, strong, athletic hounds
that possess free and easy movement – hounds that could
do the job they were originally bred for.
I am honoured to be invited to judge at this wonderful
show. I very much look forward to meeting and going over
all of your lovely puppies and hounds.
Guylaine Gagnon -
IWCC National Specialty
Sweepstake & Jr Handling
Judge
My name is Guylaine Gagnon, a
French Canadian wolfhound
lover and breeder from Québec.
I breed very few litters under the
name “Hemmingford” and those
experiences have been great moments in my life, of joys
and fears.
For more than 35 years now, my husband Clément and I
have lived on a farm in Hemmingford, a small township
south of Montréal. We bought our first wolfhounds a few
years after moving to the country; presently we share our
life and home with three wolfhounds and expect a puppy,
soon I hope.
Few years ago I retired from a long career in
Environmental impact studies. My working experiences
help me in organizing events, collaborate in projects and in
writing vulgarization on scientific subjects.
For past 10 years I have been involved in the IWCC
Québec Branch, acting as secretary-treasurer, show chair,
logistic planner and cook. I am a member of the IWCC
Board since 2008 and hope I am a good representative of
the Québec and French members. I also collaborate in the
IWCC Bulletin by writing original articles or translate
articles and official documents.
Being invited to judge the National Sweepstake is a great
pride and joy. I love puppies and I wish all those puppies
will love me too.
WHAT IS LGRA?
LGRA is sprint racing for Gazehounds. The
hounds run 200 yards straight after a lure con-
sisting of a fur bag and squawker. Up to four
hounds race a total of three times, called
programs. Depending on the order of finish, they
may attain national points towards a GRC
(Gazehound Race Champion) title. Hounds will
be hand slipped. More information can be found
at www.lgra.org
Hounds need to be one year of age or older to be
entered. They will also need to be registered with
LGRA. This can be done the first time the hound is
raced by including a photocopy of the hound’s
registration papers (either Canadian or American)
with the entry. After registration, your hound will re-
ceive an LGRA number that will be used in entering
future LGRA meets.
HOUNDS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER
WITHOUT A COPY OF PROPER REGISTRATION
AT THE TIME OF ENTRY. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL
BE ALLOWED.
All hounds will run muzzled to prevent damage to the
squawker. It is recommended that hounds be
accustomed to a muzzle before the event. A limited
supply of racing muzzles will be available for use so
please bring your own if possible. Numbered racing
blankets will also be available. Bitches in season are
not allowed to compete.
Previous experience is not required. Time allowing,
several practice runs will be held for new hounds.
Dogs five (5) years of age or older are considered
Veterans for Straight racing.
Try it and see – your hound may surprise you!
Volunteers are also welcome. We need help with
catching hounds, releasing hounds, line and foul
judging. We will train you at the meet. All support is
appreciated.
Details and premium list will be posted on the
Club website.
