Slide Rail Systems are made up of steel panels, which are similar to the sidewalls of a trench box, and vertical steel posts. The panels slide into the posts, creating a two, three or four-sided configuration. Using a “dig and push” method of installation, the panels and posts are pushed gradually into the pit as the site is being excavated. Because the Slide Rail System is installed gradually in concert with the progress of the excavation preventing trench wall loss.

TPR FiRsT in seRvice

Slide Rail Components offer the option of using lighter equipment when installing the system. The cost of rental and installation of the system is approximately 50 percent of steel sheeting. One of the biggest advantages of Slide Rail is that installation of the system and the excavation are completed together, saving time and reducing cost.

Typical Plan

Slide Rail Systems have proven to be a highly adaptable shoring system. Having the ability to provide open pits and trench depths of up to 30 feet, and huge spans without the use of Walers.

Save 30% TO 60% off conventional sheeting.

Great for pipelines.

Second to none in pit applications.

Can be installed by a small crew and an excavator (No Drill Rig required).

Flexibility of components – almost any size and configuration is possible.

Utility crossings are easy to accommodate.

Larger cantilever means large structures or pipe can be accommodated.

Multiple operations can be performed simultaneously, creating greater productivity.

TPR FiRsT in seRvice

The second type is a LINEAR Multi-Bay System which has open ends on the trench and does notuse corner posts. This configuration is idealfor installing long pipelines, even over great distances. The open ends allow contractors to install pipe in the front bay, while back-filling in the back bay and “leapfrogging” the system forward.

4-Sided Multi- Bay Multi-Bay Systems: the first is a 4-SIDED Multi-Bay system which uses corner-posts and panels to enclose the ends of the Multi-Bay system. 4-sided Multi-Bay systems are ideal for tankinstallation, long structures, or increasingly more popular: microtunneling and other types of boring operations.

The Quicksheet Guideframe from Trench Plate Rental is a special shoring solution for excavations with crossing service lines or unusual encumbrances.

Quicksheet is assembled and inserted as a complete unit into a pre-excavated trench. KD-6 overlapping sheet pile is inserted into the frame and driven to grade; creating a two, three, or four-sided shored area. The pit or trench can then be excavated while protecting the excavation walls.

The configuration of the guide frame system is adaptable, allowing for a wide variety of excavation sizes, differing elevations, or crossing utilities. Sheeting caps are used to protect the top of the sheets, as well as to allow for a larger pad to push the sheet into position.

Pre-Assembled, Pre-Engineered vertical shoring systems are quick and easy. Because they are light-weight, most shores can be handled by a single person, thus increasing productivity. The fact is in most situations, you can shore a trench as fast as your excavator can open the trench. Quik-Shor aluminum hydraulic shoring can be easily installed from above ground, keeping workers out of unprotected trenches.

Fall Arrest The use of a personal fall arrest system is used as personal protective equipment for fall hazards. A personal fall arrest system consists of a full-body harness, lanyard, and anchor point OR a full-body harness, lanyard, lifeline, anchor point, and deceleration/grabbing device. All fall protection equipment shall meet or exceed appropriate American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. All employees whose work exposes them to falling in excess of 7 1/2 feet from the perimeter of a structure, unprotected sides and edges, leading edges, through shaft ways and openings shall use only commercially manufactured equipment specifically designed for fall protection and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

Common Active Systems

Components of an active personal fall protection system:● Anchorage point must support adequate loads.● Harness (or body belt for fall restraint or positioning) must be worn as per manufacturer instructions.● Connector (lanyard) must be adjusted so worker will not reach the ground below.● Free fall distance must never exceed 6 feet.

Types of active personal fall protection systems:1. Personal Fall Arrest System2. Personal Fall Restraint System3. Positioning Devices

Personal Fall Arrest System● Use harnesses, not body belts● Use shock absorbing lanyard with 2 locking snap hooks.● Anchorage point must support 5,000 lbs.● Inspect before use.● Inspect & document each system at least twice a year.● Plan for a prompt rescue.

Personal Fall Restraint System● The fall restraint equipment should be set and adjusted so there is no free fall over the edge.● A harness or body belt may be used● The anchorage point must support 4 times the intended load.

Positioning Devices● A harness or body belt may be used● The device must be set and adjusted so there is no more than 2’ free fall.● The anchorage point must support 2 times the intended load or 3,000 lbs, whichever is greater.

► Confined Space

► Permit-Required Confined Space

► Non-Permit Confined Space

► Hazardous Atmosphere

OSHA defines a confined space as any space in which the following three conditions exist concurrently:

1. The space is large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work; and,2. The space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit; and,3. The space is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.

Examples of spaces which qualify as confined spaces under the OSHA definition include, but are not limited to: pipelines, storage tanks, vaults, vats, process vessels, catch basins, digesters, sewers, passageways, bins, boilers, pits, tank trucks, hoppers, tunnels, cargo holds, and excavations deeper than four feet.

A permit-required confined space is any confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics:

1. The space contains, or has the potential to contain, a hazardous atmosphere;2. The space contains a material which has the potential for engulfing an entrant3. The space has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor which slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross- section; or, 4. The space contains any other recognized serious health or safety hazard.

A confined space that does not contain, or with respect to atmospheric hazards, have the potential to contain any hazard capable of causing death or serious physical harm.

An atmosphere is hazardous when it contains: 1. < 19.5% oxygen (O2 deficient) or > 23.5% oxygen (O2 enriched);2. A flammable gas, vapor, or mist at a concentration greater than 10% of its LEL (Lower Explosive Limit);3. A toxic material at a concentration greater than its PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit);4. A combustible dust at a concentration greater than its LEL, which may be approximated as a condition in which the dust obscures vision at a distance of 5 feet or less; or5. Any other atmospheric condition which is IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health)

IDLH means any condition that poses an immediate or delayed threat to life or that would causeirreversible adverse health effects or that would interfere with an individual’s ability to escape unaided from a permit space.

► Diesel Ventilator Quik-Shor®

A Confined Space, in terms of OSHA and NIOSH safety requirements, refers to an area whose enclosed environment and limited access make it dangerous to workers. Confined spaces can be above or below ground level. Examples of confined spaces include pipes and sewers, crawl spaces, vents, vaults, tanks, pits, storage bins, vats and silos. Any area where access or egress is limited may be considered a confined space, especially if it is an area that can trap gases or where an injured or impaired worker may become trapped.

Ventilation is one of the most effective means of controlling hazardous atmospheres in restricted spaces.

Fans and blowers designed specifically for tight spaces can keep workers safe and promote good ventilation. Effective ventilation systems provide a method of maintaining a breathable atmosphere within the space by achieving a reduction in the level of atmospheric contaminates (gases, vapors, mists, fumes and dust) within the space.

► Testing the Confined Space Atmosphere Hazardous atmospheres are the leading cause of death in confined space work. In addition, it’s estimated that inhalation causes 90% of all chemical injuries in general industry. Hazardous atmospheres often do not exhibit any warning properties and so may not present themselves in any way that an entrant can recognize though their physical senses. A hazardous atmosphere may be colorless, odorless and tasteless and, with some contaminants, the health effects of overexposure may not be felt right away. For these reasons it is essential that the confined space atmospheric conditions be thoroughly assessed before the operation commences and continuously throughout the entry. The entry supervisor is responsible for ensuring that a confined space atmosphere is tested before anyone enters the space and that the results of the testing are appropriately recorded on the entry permit. Entrants must be allowed to observe the pre-entry testing if they choose. The internal atmosphere must be tested with a calibrated, direct-reading instrument for the following conditions in the order given:

Oxygen content; Flammable gasses and vapors; and, Potential toxic air contaminants.
