0.1 This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 28 February 1983, after the draft finalized by the !-'ire Fighting Sectional Committee h'ad been approved by the Civil Engineering Diviaion Council.

0.2 Branch pipe, universal, is one of the important items of water fittings used for general fire ft,hting, marine fire fighting and for fire fighting in oil refineri •• In additIon, branch pipe, universal, iI alto used for laying dust in mines and for .moke dispenal in rescue operations. The advantages of. thia type of branch pipe over the ordinary branch pipe covered by IS : 903-1975· are that it it capable oC providing atomized spray and wide-spreading curtain in addition to a straight jet and it· minimize. water damage which is of particUlar importance on board ships and in storage rooms. This standard has been prepared with a view to providing guidance both in manufacture and purchase of branch pipes, universal, of proper design and construction and capable of giving the required performance. This standard was tint published in year 1964. The revision hal been prepared so as to give complete detail. of the drawing. and also keeping its provisionJ in line with the latest Indian Standarda on similar item.. '

0.3 For the purpose oC deciding whether a particular requirement of thi. standard i. complied with, the fioal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off'in a ccordance with IS : 2 .. 1960t. The number of significant pJ aces retained in the rounded off value should be the same al that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard Jays down the requirement8 regarding material, shape, dimensions, finish and performance test for the branch pipe, universal, used for fire fighting purposes.

2. MATERIALS

2.1 C._tiIlSS and Forging8 - The castings and forgings shall be made of anyone of tl.e materials given under 2.1.1 and 2.1.2.

2.1.1 C{)pPtr Alloys - Copper' alloys used for castings or forgings shall conform to the requiremtnts given below:

a) Sand castings - Grade L TB2 of IS : 318-1981·

b) High tensile castings - Grade HTBI of IS : 304-1981 t e) Die castings - Grade 3 of IS : 292-1961 t d) lIo! forgings - Grade I of IS : 291-1977§

2.1.2 Aluminium Alloy - Aluminium allo)' used [or casting! shall conform to IS Designation 4450 or 4225 of IS : 617-1973\1.

3. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

3.1 The branch pipe shall consist of body, diffuser and noute (Set Fig. I ).

3.2 The sha.pe and dimensions of the body, diffuser and nozzle shall be as shown in Fig. 2 to Fig. 4. The tolerance ou all such machined parts shall where not mentioned be ± 0 25 mnl.

4. WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH

4.1 AU parts shall be of good workmanship and finish. The forgings and castings shall be sound and free from pits, blow holes. Icales, cracks and other imperfection" and shall not be repaired or filled 10 as to hide casting defects. The w(ltcrway ~haU have a smooth finish. The exterior of the fitting shall be rounded and made smooth.

5. PERFORMA.NCE TEST

5.1 Hydra.lIe Test - The branch pipe shall be subjected to a hydraulic pressure of 2'1 MN/ml (21 kgf/cmJ) for a period of two minutes for the purpose of locating porosity in the casting. The test pressure shall be applied after aU machining operations have been completed. Branch pIpe when 10 tested shall not ,how any sign of leakage.

5.2 Operatloaal Test - Branch pipe .haH be capable of deliveriDI a spray over a range varyiDg from 150 to complete shut off.

6. MARKING

6.1 Each branch pipe Ihall be dearly and permanently marked with the following information:

a) Manufacturer's name or trade .. mark, and

b) Year of manufacture.

The product may also be marked with Standard Mark.

6.2.1 The use of the StindaM Mark is governed by the provisions of tb Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations mac thereunder. The details or conditions under which the licence for the use c Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtaine· from the Bureau of Indian SlIndards.
