1. SCOPE

2. MATERIALS

2.1 Fraine - Cast iron used in the manufacture of surface boxes shallbe of a quality of not less than Grade FG 150 orIS: 210-1978·.

2.2 Hinge Pia - Hinge pin shall 'be made of galvanized mild steelconforming to IS: 280-1972t. Tile galvanizing shall be done in accor­dance with IS : 2629-1966t.

3. MANUFACTURE AND WORKMANSHIP

3.1 Surface boxes shall be clearly cast to the specified dimensions. The,castings shall be sound, clean and free from porosity, blow holes, hardspots, cold shuts and chills. They shall be well dressed and fettled, andalso free from voids due to shrinkage, gas inclusions or other causes.

4. CONSTRUCTION

4.1 The surface boxes shall be made in accordance with the details givenin Fig. I.

4.2 Cover - The upper surface of the covers shall IJe designed with anadequate non-slip surface which shall, unless otherwise specified, includethe letter '\\Tt cast therein. The design may also include such otherletters as may he agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

5. t DiJDen8ion. - Dimensions shall conform to those specified in Fig. 1.

5.2 Toleraaces --,.-- TIle following tolerances shall be allowed on thedimensions:

a) all dimensions up to and including 10 mm + 2 mm

1» all dimensions above 10 mm up to and including 50 mm ± 2 romc) 011 dimensions over 50 mm ± 5 mm

6. MASS

6.1 The minimum mass of surface boxes shall be 33 kg.

7. INSPECTION

7.1 The manufacturers shall afford all reasonable facilities for carryingout inspection during the course of manufacture and facilities shall begiven to the purchaser, if he so desires, to carry out inspection of thesurface boxes to his order before the application of any coating'

8. PROTECTIVE COATING

8.1 Surface boxes shall be thoroughly cleaned-and dried andthen coatedby being dipped in a bath containing a composition having a bitumeraortar base. The coating shall be smooth and tenacious so as not to flowwhen exposed to a temperature of 63°C and shall not be so brittle as tochip off at a temperature of 15°C.

9. MARKING

9.1 Each surface box shall cast on them the following information:

a) Manufacturer's name and trade-mark, and

b) The word 'W' or any other letter as agreed to between the pur­chaser and the manufacturer.

9.1.1 Each surface box may also be marked with the lSI CertificationMark,

NOTE - The use of the lSI Certification Mark is governed by the provisrons ofthe Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act and the Rules andRegulatioDs made thereunder, The lSI Mark on products covered by an IndianStandard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with therequirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, t~ting andquality control which is devised and supervised by IS-I and operated by the pro­ducer. ISI marked products are also continuously checked by lSI for conformity tothat standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licencefor the use of the lSI Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or pro­cessors may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
