RODENT INFESTATION UPDATE
Students and staff have set up new classrooms in the STEM room
and Library for the present. The school has engaged extra cleaning
staff for daily cleans to ensure all surfaces remain spotless. Carpets
have been professionally cleaned. Mr Rudd has been working to
remove deceased rodents from our school and reset baiting
stations on a daily basis. We appreciate the extra support we have
received from James Muller, Assets Officer and our Director, Mr
Dwyer, for visiting our school this week to check progress. In the
coming weeks, old ceiling and wall vents will be sealed, old gas
heaters removed and all crevices and holes plugged. Our
cleaners, Fess, Stephany and Garry have been stoic and
determined in their work and are to be commended for their
outstanding efforts!
THANK YOU READING VOLUNTEERS
We are delighted to welcome our
special reading volunteers; Tammy,
Jessyca and Brooke who will be
encouraging and supporting our
students during literacy and
numeracy sessions this term. We
greatly appreciate the strong
partnerships we have established
with our parents and carers to support the many programs and
opportunities at Cumnock Public.

SENSORY GARDEN TAKES SHAPE
Students in 2/3/4 have enthusiastically commenced work on a new sensory garden project this
term in PDHPE with Mr West. The unit focuses on healthy living, both physically and mentally.
Students are encouraged to practise mindfulness whilst completing tasks and work with others to
develop a sense of belonging and connection to the school. The aim of the garden is to use
native plants to create a calming and relaxing sensory space and learn about the local native
flora, fauna and the importance of ecosystems. Students will learn how to care for their gardens
and have been hard at work identifying and removing weeds, digging out Agapanthus, Iris and
Kurrajong for relocation, digging holes and planting Hakea. Gravel will be delivered for
spreading on the meandering pathways in the near future. We are looking forward to being able
to share this unique space in our school and helping it grow and thrive! Watch this space…
Literally! Thank you again to both Mr West and Mrs Hubbard for leading in this exciting project.
CWA PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
We welcomed our dedicated adjudicators, Mrs O’Brien and Mrs Gibson for our school CWA
Public Speaking competition. Students are to be congratulated for preparing their speeches
which were informative and delivered with clarity and humour. Both Mrs O’Brien and Mrs Gibson
have supported our Public Speaking capabilities for over 20 years and our School Captains
presented them with a posy of flowers in recognition of their service to our school. We were
thrilled to be able to sing Happy Birthday to Mrs Gibson after the event as well!
Congratulations and good luck to Charlie O’Brien, Angus O’Brien, Abby Armstrong and Ollie Flick
who will deliver their speeches at the Central West Group Speaking Competition in Orange in
Week 6.

KIDS’LIT QUIZ
The Kids’ Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 – 13 years. This year Cumnock
Public is entering two teams of four. Quizzes are held in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong,
Indonesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and the USA. The winning
team from each heat competes in a National Final. National champions compete in the World
Final. The quiz was founded by New Zealand quizmaster Wayne Mills, who reads enough books
to write several thousand questions each year. Good luck to our excited students, Macey, Rose
B, Angus, Roman, Kiera, Charlie O, Rose F and Lizzie in their first round in the NSW Central West
Virtual Heat on Wednesday 26th May 2021.
PSSA OSSA GOLD HOCKEY VERSUS BOWEN PUBLIC SCHOOL
OSSA GOLD took to the Orange Hockey Centre fields after a delicious breakfast reward treat
prior to the game against Bowen Public School in both the PSSA Boys and Girls Hockey divisions.
Fair play and encouragement by all players was a feature of these games and the students had
a great deal of fun! Thank you to Mrs Philpott and Mrs Brodie for their coaching expertise and to
Gabby Caughlan from Bowen Public who supported our organisation and changeable match
times. Thank you to the many teachers, parents and the OSSA Gold cheer squad that blasted
from the sidelines and stand. A special mention for the Year 10 Canobolas Rural Technology High
School referees, Jessica Healey and Maddison Reilly who did a great job with their whistles. Both
teams progress to the next round of the competition.
P & C MEETING
It is always encouraging to see many parents at our P & C meetings amidst the busy sowing and
farming schedules and vermin eradication programs in operation across our community. Thank
you for your attendance and support. At this meeting, Mrs Robyn Bruce tabled the
current WHS Consultation Statement for Cumnock Public School and presented the same
document at our recent staff meeting. Thank you to Mrs Bruce and Sarah Godwin for their
support and guidance in regards to WHS at Cumnock. In addition, the P & C are in the process of
organising an exciting fundraising event in June and we thank them in anticipation for the
mammoth task ahead with limited time on their side. Please continue to support the work of our
small but dedicated P & C.

LEARNING WEBSITES THAT WE RECOMMEND
There are plenty of websites online that are educational for students, however, sometimes it can
be difficult to choose those that are beneficial for your child. Here are two websites that
Cumnock classes recommend and use on a regular basis:
Typing.com This website allows students to learn valuable technology fundamentals and
keyboard skills through engaging games and lessons for students. The Year 6’s are aiming to type
approximately 40 words per minute so that they are ready for high school. Following NAPLAN, it
was highlighted that our students need to continue to improve their computer keyboard skills to
support future learning, assessment tasks and online testing skills.
Timestables.com Cumnock students are learning their multiplication tables with increased speed
and accuracy. This website allows students to practise all of their timetables through speed tests,
activities and games.
If you have any problems with either of these free websites, please see Miss Gentles!
CRAZY HAIR DAY AND SMART PUPS
We are hosting a crazy hair day with a special lunch provided by Shane and Mary Leese to raise
funds for an assistance dog to support their son, Elliot. A special guest ‘Jenga’, from Smart Pups,
will be in attendance to raise awareness of the wonderful work of this not-for-profit organisation
that provides support to children with special needs and their families. Our Preschool friends will
be joining us for lunch at school on Wednesday 26th May. Notes have gone home for orders.
Smart Pups is a not-for-profit charity organisation based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
We specialise in providing trained service dogs to assist children with special needs. Our goal is to
improve quality of life of children with special needs by training assistance dogs in task-specific skills.
Smart Pups is an approved training institution under the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dog Act 2009.

Hello families of Cumnock Public School,
My name is Rachael Lord and I am honoured to be appointed as your School
Counsellor. I have very much enjoyed getting to know the Cumnock community this
year, and have been made to feel incredibly welcome- thank you!
In 2020, I moved from Sydney to Orange following completion of my studies.
Previously I worked as an Early Childhood Teacher across a range of settings, and
most recently, have combined my knowledge of child development, psychology and
education through my work as a School Counsellor across the Sydney region.
I am currently appointed at three schools in the Orange region, and work in my role 4 days per week. I will be
coming out to Cumnock approximately 3 times per term. Although not always physically present, I am more
than happy to be contacted at any time. Please do not hesitate to contact the school should you have any
queries, concerns or questions about your child’s learning, behaviour or development that I may be able to
assist with.
In a number of weeks I will be expecting my second child, and will therefore be taking leave. I do however
expect to be returning to my role at some stage in 2022.
Thank you to the children and families that I have had the pleasure of working with so far. I very much look
forward to meeting more of you over the coming years.

NSW Student Wellbeing Program Funding 2018-2021
Cumnock Public School was successful in its application for the NSW Student Wellbeing Officer
Program which was a three-year funded initiative. We have been very fortunate that Mrs Nelson
has been working in this space for over three years, through a partnership with NSW Department
of Education, Generate Ministries, CPS Parent and Citizens Association and the School Executive
team.
Mrs Nelson has been an extra layer of wellbeing support for the school community and our wider
Community of Schools network. Her outstanding support and care of students and staff has been
valued and appreciated. Mrs Nelson has worked alongside students in the area of wellbeing,
cared for families and parents, run programs and activities and provided much-needed
additional support in our classrooms.
Mrs Nelson will continue to be with the Cumnock Public School community, as our school
Chaplain, under the National Schools Chaplaincy funding, until the end of 2022. She will continue
to work with our students, staff and wider community building capacity in the area of wellbeing.
Last week we welcomed Rachael Bell, Field Development Manager with Generate Services, to
discuss and reflect on the program at Cumnock. Having a Student Wellbeing Officer/Chaplain in
our school these past three years has had a positive and profound impact on our entire
community and we look forward to Mrs Nelson’s continued dedicated support in our school.
OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES
The school community wishes to send our deepest condolences to Maureen Murray and her
family after the loss of Jim last week. Maureen and Jim have been stalwart supporters of our
school over many years and our thoughts remain with Maureen and her family during this difficult
and sad time.
