Hurry up and wait! Now that Black Friday has come and gone, everyone is in a mad rush to get everything ready for the big celebration of Christmas. This has become a frenzied season of shopping, card-writing, and travel-planning for many of us. And in the secular culture, Christmas has already come. It arrived before the turkey even got cold on Thanksgiving Day.

But we Catholics follow a different schedule, a schedule focused on the Church’s liturgical year. The Catholic Church has, since very early on, marked the passage of time with annual celebrations of the various mysteries and events of salvation history. To mention the highpoints: Every year we celebrate the Annunciation when the Archangel Gabriel visited Mary and Jesus took on flesh in his mother’s womb. We celebrate Jesus’ birthday at Christmas. We remember his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. The Church does this so that we never forget all that God has done for us.

We begin this annual cycle of feast days, at the start of December, with the season of Advent. I think this must be the most neglected of all the Church’s seasons. Which

is unfortunate. I think we cheat ourselves if we skip to the Christmas music, parties, and decorations immediately after Thanksgiving. We cheat ourselves because Advent is meant to be a season of building expectation for our celebration of the arrival of the Christ. As the Catechism puts it, “When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming” (CCC 524). If we start celebrating Christmas now, we’ll be sick of all the revelry, music, and decorations by the time it actually arrives! Now is the time, rather, to prayerfully and quietly begin preparing ourselves spiritually to meet Jesus when he comes again. And it is a time to prepare ourselves for the worthy celebration of the Christ-Mass. It’s a good time to go to confession, to make renewed efforts at prayer and the reading of Scripture. It’s a great time to hurry up and wait, quietly, for the arrival of Jesus. Our parishes provide you with quite a few resources to celebrate this season well. Some of them are listed later in this bulletin. Please, make use of them!

Advent Resources: Here is a list of some helpful resources as we begin the season of Advent: • Pick up your copies of the Word Among

Us booklet of daily meditations for Advent and the Magnificat Advent Companion, both available in our churches at no cost.

• If you are interested in various family activities for Advent (such as how a family can bless their Christmas tree) check out the US Bishops’ site at usccb.org/advent.

• Bishop Robert Barron is offering daily Advent reflections. You can find them on our parish website, holyrosarystanley.com, or at wordonfire.org.

• Lastly, of course, don’t forget to check out the many resources available for Advent on FORMED, including daily reflections (see the bottom of this page).

Advent retreat in Watford City Dec. 7-8: Epiphany Parish in Watford City welcomes nationally-known speaker Judy Hehr for an Advent retreat on Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8. To find out more about this event consult the Facebook page at facebook.com/wcepiphany or the parish website wcepiphany.com. Note on Immaculate Conception Holy Day: The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is typically celebrated on December 8th each year, and is normally a holy day of obligation. This year, however, December 8th falls on a Sunday of Advent. For this reason the Solemnity in 2019 is transferred to Monday, December 9th. The obligation associated with the feast, however, is not transferred. This means, in short, that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception will be celebrated on December 9th, and will not be a holy day of obligation. Our Lady of Guadalupe Event, Dec. 12: Corpus Christi Church in Bismarck and the local Spanish community invite everyone to celebrate the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi Church. After Mass, authentic Mexican food will be served in the cafeteria. The menu includes: pozole, tamales, rice, beans, buñuelos and champurrado. There is no cost for the meal. Contact the office at 255-4600 to RSVP. Corazon weekend Dec. 13-15: The diocese has developed a program for struggling marriages called Corazon (Spanish for heart). Corazon is a weekend experience to be held Dec. 13-15 in which couples will be challenged to soften their hearts by considering what the sacrament of marriage is all about, look deeply into their own short-comings and failures and, finally, to offer different tools to help heal past hurts and move forward. No one will be turned away because of a lack of funds,

however, non-refundable deposit of $100 to secure registration is requested. Register online at bismarckdiocese.com/corazon. Contact Tara at the diocesan Office of Family Ministry at 204-7209 for more information. 2020 Calendars: Next year’s calendars have arrived. They include beautiful artwork depicting Catholic life in the 20th century. Get your copy at either parish. Amazon.com will donate 0.5% of what you spend on their site to Queen of the Most Holy Rosary when you shop by visiting http://smile.amazon.com and selecting “Church of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary” as your charity of choice.
