Ekene Ikeme In our second part of show- casing the 2013-14 winter sports’ season for Alameda high school athletes, we will take a trip to the soccer fields. This season the wom- en’s teams are experiencing much better results than their male coun- terparts. Alameda Hornets The Alameda High men’s team is off to a rough start in the 2014 season. The Hornets are 2-10- 1 on the season. They did man- age to defeat two West Alameda County Conference (WACC) foes in Tennyson of Hayward (3-0) on Dec. 10 and Arroyo of San Lorenzo (1-0) on Jan. 24. The team will play Bishop O’ Dowd of Oakland tomorrow at Thompson Field. The Lady Hornets have fared much better this year sporting a 9-3-3 record and 4-1-2 in league play. The Hornets are on a nine-game streak of no losses (seven wins and two ties) as of Jan. 28. Included in the streak are dominating victories such as the 1-0 victory over Encinal on Jan. 15, a 5-1 win over Arroyo on Jan. 20 and an 8-0 beat down of San Lorenzo last Saturday, Jan. 25. Alameda will also take on Bishop O Dowd in its next contest tomorrow on the road. Encinal Jets The Encinal men’s team is cur- rently 2-6-1 overall, but a respect- able 2-2 in the WACC. The Jets’ league wins are over Mt. Eden of Hayward (3-2) on Dec. 10 and Tennyson (3-0) on Jan. 10. The Jets played rival Alameda to a 3-3 tie on Jan. 14. The Jets will look to stop its three-game losing streak against Castro Valley on Monday, Feb. 3 on the road. The Lady Jets are an even 4-4 as we approach February. The Lady Jets started the sea- son hot, winning four of its first five games, including wins over De Anza of El Sobrante (3-1) on Dec. 3, a 1-0 victory over San Leandro on Dec. 12 and a 4-0 win against Arroyo on Dec. 17. However, since then Encinal has lost three straight including the 1-0 loss to Alameda. The Jet will look to snap the losing streak against San Leandro tomor- row at Stargell Field. SJND Pilots The St. Joseph Notre Dame men’s soccer team has hit a bit of a rough patch, as they are currently 4-10-2 on the year and 0-8 in the Tri- County Athletic League. The team won its first three contests over St. Patrick/St. Vincent, Anderson and Red Bluff by a combined score of 11-2, but has since acquired just one victory over its last 13 games as of Monday, Jan. 27. The Pilots will take on Richmond today in its next game. The Lady Pilots are also playing at a higher level than their male counterparts. The team is 4-4-2 on the season. The Pilots boast victo- ries over Hercules (6-2) on Nov. 19, Richmond (6-1) on Jan. 14 and El Cerrito (3-2) on Jan. 23. The team will look to continue its strong season against Richmond today on the road. Women Outshine Men in Soccer Courtesy photo The Alameda Islanders rugby Team huddles up. Islanders Begin 11th Year of Rugby Club Sun staff reports The Alameda Rugby Islanders are ready to kick off its 2014 season on Feb. 8. The 2014 season will be the 11th year of the rugby club, which began in 2003. The team and head coach Austin Britts have spent the entire month of January training for the upcoming season. The club held mini camps for the men’s under- 19 squad on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5 at the soccer field near Alameda Point. On Jan 12, the rugby club cel- ebrated Alameda Recreation and Park Department’s decision to allow them to hold future practices at Tillman Park on Bay Farm Island. Last year, the club spent a por- tion of the 2013 season in practice field limbo after not being able to train at its usual practice field near Wood Middle School due to mis- takes made by the club while filing for permits with the city, according to a letter to the editor post by Britts. So having a permanent prac- tice field is huge for the club. The team has played scrim- mages the past three weekends. On Jan. 11 they played the Napa Stormers, they took part in the 30h Annual Sac Valley Kickoff Tournament at Rancho Cordova High in Sacramento on Jan. 19 and defeated the Berkeley Rhinos 24-20 in a friendly on Jan. 25 in Berkeley. The Islanders will take on the Cavaliers of Pleasanton on Feb. 8 in the first league match of 2014. Jeremy Castro, then a teacher at Alameda High, founded the team in 2003. The team is made up of play- ers attending Alameda and Encinal high schools, Alameda Science Technical Institute and Bay Area School of Enterprise high schools.
