The school year is quickly drawing to a close and I am incredibly pleased to note that we have accomplished many of the goals set out in our school improvement plan. Our STEAM programs culminated nicely with our STEAM night on May 11th. Over 400 parents and community members visited classrooms and worked with students on their inquiries and projects.

In celebration of Canadas 150th anniversary this year, Islington JMS is selling red baseball hats that feature both our school name and the Canada 150 logo. These memorable pieces will be sold during the month of June for $10.00 each. They are in limited supply! Students can order through their classroom teacher. Hats will also be sold at our Spring Concert.

I am also pleased to announce that our school has met its goal to receive the highest eco certification of PLATINUM this year! This is a result of all the effort and commitment of our staff, students and community. In celebration of the arts, I would like to invite you all to our spring concert on Wednesday June 7th at 6:00pm. We look forward to honouring the unique talents inherent in all of our students. I would like to extend my congratulations to our graduating grade 8 students who have worked hard toward their transition to high school. In celebration of their accomplishments, we will be accompanying them to Ottawa from June 12th to the 14th. We have much to be thankful for as a community! I would like to thank our dedicated staff for their tremendous efforts in ensuring the success of your children. I thank all of our parents/guardians and community partners for their unwavering support and lastly, a BIG thank you to our students for their commitment to learning and growing. Have a SAFE and wonderful summer, everyone!

You are all invited to join us for our spring concert on Wednesday June 7, 2017! Music and dance are in the air as our Islington JMS students showcase their unique talents, refined through the hard work theyve put forth throughout the year. The concert will feature student performances from Kindergarten to Grade 8. WHERE: School gym WHAT TIME: 6:00pm start 7:30pm end The parent letter was sent home on Friday June 2nd with details regarding student drop off and pick up. Popcorn will be sold in the front foyer. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Regular attendance is necessary to make progress at school. If your child is absent, the following actions need to be taken:

Attendance

If a student is to be excused during the school day, the parent or guardian should send a note to school with the student explaining the circumstance and the parent may telephone the school.

If a student is absent from school the whole day or part of a day, the parent should telephone the school prior to 8:30 in the morning or 12:30 in the afternoon, thus ensuring safe arrival. The telephone

number is 416-394-7874. A note from a parent communicating the childs absence is also acceptable.

PLATINUM CERTIFICATION!!!!!

BIKE/WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK MAY 29TH

JUNE 2ND

Our annual Bike/Walk to School week was a huge success! Many of our students rode their bikes or walked in an attempt to reduce energy consumption and to increase their level of physical activity. Students who did this had the opportunity to place their names in a draw for great prizes! The prizes were given out at our student assembly on June 2nd. Students also engaged in very important discussions around BIKE SAFETY. This includes the consistent use of a helmet as well as getting off the bike and walking the bike when crossing a street. A big thank you to all those who participated in and organized this important initiative!

PLATINUM CERTIFICATION!! May 1, 2017, Islington JMS participated in the Eco Audit to determine whether or not the school would meet the criteria for Platinum certification. The auditor met with various staff members, the eco team, administration and learned about all the amazing eco initiatives that the school has undertaken this year. Some of the assessed criteria are included below:

Specific goals co-created with all stakeholders around eco initiatives

Waste reduction plan
