Ms. Chen’s Promotion As many of you are aware, Ms. Chen has recently been promoted to Vice-Principal at Tredway Woodsworth P.S. We congratulate Ms. Chen on her promotion. During her time at C.D. Farquharson J.P.S., Ms. Chen has demonstrated a true commitment to students, staff and community and we wish her the best in her new role.

Traffic and Lates Traffic during the drop off morning time continues to improve. Please make sure you give yourself enough time so that your child is not late. You will need to factor in the extra waiting time on Brimley Road while waiting to turn into our bus loop/drop off area. The more families who walk to school will help to alleviate traffic congestion both during drop off and pick up times.

Principal’s Message The month of February has shown us a variety of temperatures and weather. We have had snow, rain and spring-like weather!

Fundraising In January, we sent home a letter requesting fundraising donations. I am excited to share that we raised about $4,000. Thank you so much for your generous donations. As a result of your generous donations, every classroom is now equipped with a data projector and laptop. Additionally every Primary classroom has a few iPad minis and the Junior classrooms have extra laptops. We will continue to maintain and supplement our technology inventory.

Chocolate milk sales have started again. Student helpers deliver the milk to kindergarten classes and sell the milk in the gym every day for students to buy. The cost is 50 cents and is ‘not for profit’ to keep the cost as low as possible.

Registration Month

To attend Junior Kindergarten in September, children must turn four-years-old by December 31. To register for Senior Kindergarten, children must be five-years-old by December 31.

Congratulations Trustee Shan

Earlier this week, Ward 21 Trustee, Neethan Shan, was elected to City Council resulting in a trustee vacancy in Ward 21. The remaining trustees for the Toronto District School Board have decided that Trustees Wong, Chadwick, Smith and Kandeval will be available to support Ward 21 schools and communities, until such time that the vacancy is filled. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Trustee Shan on his appointment and thank him for his outstanding contribution and partnership with each and every school and community in Ward 21. CDF Traffic

As many of you are aware, parking at CDF is limited and has many challenges. During our busiest drop

off times (8:25 – 8:45 a.m.), we block off the parking spaces adjacent to the bus loop to help prevent further congestion and unsafe scenarios. If possible, we encourage parents to walk their children to school to help reduce traffic and to promote environmentally friendly ways. Please note that the North parking lot is designated as Staff Parking only. Parents, please do not park in this lot. A couple of years ago, when this area used to be a drop off and pick up area, the congestion was not safe for our students.

If you need to park, you may be lucky to obtain a spot in the South parking lot. If not, many of our parents park on a side street and then walk to school. Thank you so much for adhering to the parking rules and helping to alleviate some of the traffic.

Lunchroom Supervisors Needed

If you have experience working with children and an ability to communicate in English sensitively with our students, parents and others, please consider joining our team. Your main role will be to ensure the safety and security of our students during the daily lunch period for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Necessary skills include patience, understanding and the ability to encourage positive relations among students. $11.40/hr. (supply) or $18.96/hr. (permanent)

Learning About Mental Wellness

On Wednesday, February 8th, 2017, selected grade 6`s went to Agincourt C.I. to learn about Mental Wellness and Awareness.

When we arrived at A.C.I., we were led into the library. We took our seats and waited for the other schools to arrive. Then, the presentation started. There were many fun activities to do! Our first activity was a relay race. We were divided into four teams. There was one sheet of chart paper in front of each team. After, the A.C.I. students wrote “wellness” in an acrostic poem. Then we raced to the chart to write the words related to mental wellness. The first team to finish won. Next, we played charades. Each team had a leader which would tell them a word to act out without talking and the first team to guess all their words won. CDF won this activity! Then we had lunch which A.C.I. kindly provided us with pizza and drinks. Afterwards we made our own stress balls! We took a balloon and filled it with flour. After the leaders showed us a slideshow of what mental awareness really means. Mental awareness is how you feel about yourself. Good mental awareness is feeling good about yourself and not doubting yourself. It’s also about having a growth mindset and finding ways to get your mind off a sad event that happened or if you feel insecure.

If possible, we encourage parents to walk their children to school to help reduce traffic and to promote environmentally friendly ways.

People with mental illnesses can still have good mental health and people with no mental illnesses can still have bad mental health.
