Current evaluation system to measure the qualityy Evaluation of the student performance only at specific intervals

y Very time consuming and costly affair: Whether students have

understood the current topic or not cannot be estimated untilevaluation

y No mechanism is available to the student to evaluate their ownunderstanding of the subject.

y No uniform benchmarking mechanism available for measuring thequality of the student

ONLINE EXAMINATION SYSTEM

(Item Response Theory)

In psychometrics, item response theory (IRT) also known as latent trait

theory, strong true score theory, or modern mental test theory, is a paradigm

for the design, analysis, and scoring of tests, questionnaires, and similar

instruments measuring abilities, attitudes, or other variables. It is based on the

application of related mathematical models to testing

y The evaluation of the student performance is done only atspecific intervals.

y Whether students have understood the current topic or notcannot be estimated. If it is done may be a very timeconsuming and costly affair.

y No mechanism is available to the student to evaluate their

own understanding of the subject.

y No general benchmarking mechanism available for measuringthe quality of the student

Conventional examination system suffers from the

following shortcomings:

Page 12: ISM It in Education

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ism-it-in-education 12/24

The existing examination system suffers from some

of the following limitations:

y Creation of the large question bank covering the entireuniversity syllabi

y Continuous up-dation of the question bank

y Dependable secure system

Page 13: ISM It in Education

The System may contain the following

features Creating data banks for various subjects offered in the

University, initially for IT stream and extendible to otherstreams subsequently.

Adaptive on line test paper to judge the potential of

the student. Control and monitoring feature for smooth conductance

of the tests

 Secure authentication of the candidate

Practice paper available to the students for selfevaluation through web

 Online examination System Feedback

 Result preparation and reporting

Examination system

The Examination System would be a online testingfacility similar to the lines of ETS. Various

organizations can use this facility to conduct their

exams in an online fashion.

Question Paper Generation

The question paper can be created using 2 ways namely.

By Preparation of Question Paper blueprint:

A question paper blueprint consists of a set of hierarchical section. Each of thissection consists of an instruction (or remark) which would be displayed on the screenfor those particular sections.

A preview of the question paper would be available as when it is beingconstructed.

By providing Question Paper Matrix:

The question paper matrix would include items like no. of question from differenttopics, difficulty level mix 10% low, 50% medium, 40 % high). The question thussuggested can be modifies to suite a particular examination requirement

Evaluation

The module can be used to a statistical analysis of the result-

 Chi-Square Test.

 Percentile.

 Class Average. Std. Deviation.

Plotting of the Performance of the batch.

Plotting of the performance of the candidate in differentattempts.

Constraints

The system should provide graceful degradation in situationwhere there are power and network failures.

The question paper and question pool should be secured

using proper cryptographic techniques.

Inter System delays between systems should be avoided orreduced to minimum.

Audit log of operations on the system should be maintained.
