The new International Flamenco Institute, located in Jerez de la Frontera, will become the center of the amenco world. As an icon for the city and nation, the building design should represent the sensuality, passion, and vibrance of Flamenco. In this regard, the formal and visual concept for this project is both the amenco dress and the roses worn by amenco dancers. The primary facade is modeled in the form of randomly generated red plastic and fabric “owers” that can be attached or detached to open or close the building.
The plaza located in front of the building is designed to be exible, not only for temporary stages and parties, but also for equestrian performances, farmers markets, and other community activities. Multiple stages are located through-out the building, allowing for many dierent performances at once (for example, during festivals). All of the public activities, including the shop, main auditorium and cafe, are located on the rst oor. The facade can be retracted to allow the building to become completely open. The second oor is reserved for the locker room and practice areas for performers, and the top oor includes the oce spaces and library.
This formal and urban gestures are designed to be iconic not just for the building and city of Jerez de la Frontera, but a jewel for Flamenco across the entire world.

CREATING A CENTER POINT
WE BELIEVE THAT ART OF FLAMENCO AND ITS ATTRACTIVENESS SHOULD BE DISPLAYED. THEREFORE BUILDING SHOULD CREATE CONDITIONS TO FOCUS ON ACTIVITY ASSOCI-
ATED WITH FLAMENCO, AND GIVE OPPORTUNITY OF QUICK AND EASY MOVEMENT FROM PERFORMANCES PLACE TO THE STREETS. ACCORDING TO THIS EXPECTATIONS, IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT MAJOR AREA POINT SHOULD BE LOCATED ON THE EXTENSIONS
OF PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICLE ROADS.
MODELING THE AMPHITHEATER / PUBLIC SPACE
THE SHAPE OF FLAMENCO SCHOOL / MUSEUM BUILDING RESEMBLES ROSE, AND IN ITS INTERIOR IT HAS A PATIO. THIS PATIO WAS CRREATED BY TWISTING AND DEPRESS-ING THE PEDESTRIAN PATHS SITUATED BETWEEN THE BUILDING BOXES. THIS ACTION
STRENGTHENED THE SENSE OF A CENTER-CREATIING PLACE. THERE ARE RAMPS LEAD-ING TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SQURE. IT CREATES, IN THE SAME TIME, THE FORM AND
FUNCTION OF AMPHITHEATER, AND HOLDS THE COMUNICATIONAL DUTIES. THAT ARRANGEMENT INTRODUCES BETTER QUALITY AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL APPEARANCE OF THIS PUBLIC SPACE. DYNAMIC OUTLOOK OBTAINED BY SOFT LINES BECOME EXCEL-
LENT BACKGROUND FOR FLAMENCO CREATIVITY. SOME PARTS OF THE BUILDING ,TOWERS OVER THE SURROUNDING RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT, ARE BECOMING
DISTINCTIVE LANDMARK. SIMULTANEOUSLY LOWERING HEIGHT IN SEVERAL POINTS, IS DIRECTING A USER SIGHTS TOWARDS THE CATHEDRAL LOCATED IN THE SOUTH FROM
THE OBJECT.
ARRANGEING THE FUNCTIONS
EACH FUNCTION OF THE OBJECT IS CONNECTED EACH OTHER BY THE SPIRAL PAVEMENT OR BY CORRIDORS IN UNDERGROUND PART OF THE
BUILDING. IT WAS PROPOSED TO EXPOSE MORE PUBLIC FACILITIES SUCH AS LIBRARY, MUSEUM, THEATER AND CAFETERIA BY SITUATING
THEM ABOVE ON THE GROUND LEVEL WITH GLAZING WALLS. THIS MAKES THE BUILDIN EASY ACCESIBLE TROM EACH SIDE AND BRINGS
THE USAGE TO EVERY PART OF THE BUILDING’S BORDERS. FUNCTIONS CONNECTED WITH SCHOOL: CLASSES, GYM, DRESS DESIGN WORK-SHOPS ETC. ARE LOCATED AROUND THE AMPHITHEATRE AND HAS
STAIR AND ELEVATOR COMUNICATION WITH UPPER FLOOR FACILITIES. STORAGE AND TECHNICALE ROOMS ARE SITUATED ON THE OPPOSITE
SIDE OF CLASSES, FAR FROM THE PATIO. IN ADDITION, THE SCHOOL ZONE HAS SEPARATE ENTRANCE FROM THE PATIO.
IDEA
THE SPIRIT OF FLAMENCO HAS DROVE INTO AN EARTH LIKE HUGE AND FAST TORNADO. IT DRAGS USERS INTO AN ABYSS THROUGH A SPIRAL RAMP. DURING DESCENED LOTS OF
TEMPTETATIONS LOCATED BEHIND GLASS WALLS OF BUILDING OFFER THEM DIFFRENT AMANITIES OF PUBLIC LIFE. SO, IN THAT WAY, THIS SPACE LIVES DURING THE DAYS AND
NIGHTS, FULL OF PEOPLE, FLAMENCO AND GHOSTS.

STAGE PORTICO
The Plaza del Flamenco celebrates and communicates the history and vibrancy of flamenco while preserving the urban fabric that makes up the heart of Jerez de la Frontera. Traditional Andalusian stylistic elements embed this new edifice, housing a timeless art form, within its present built context.
Jerez de la Frontera is rich with history. A bustling municipality and home of many
vineyards and ranches, the city has the noble claim as the birthplace of flamenco. Yet in the heart of this fabric, between the church of San Lucas and the Catedral de Jerez, lies a void. Rather than filling its boundaries the Plaza del Flamenco enjoys the openness and creates purposeful public spaces.
Masonry and plaster walls continue the street contours but give way to shape
new public spaces. Along the Plaza de Belén the project continues the street wall from the west, but recedes to form new spaces for café dining, public gatherings, and outdoor flamenco performances. As opposed to a secluded, fully enclosed courtyard, the new plaza embodies art’s ability to engage anyone with its opens face and arcade, whose arms reach out to welcome all to the Plaza del Flamenco. The project, by publicly and overtly extending its services, emphasizes that what the Plaza del Flamenco represents is integral to Spanish culture.
The tower’s visibility from the neighboring Plaza de los Peones welcomes patrons
and scholars from the community to the halls within the institution. As a municipal and international icon for flamenco, the tower takes its place among the low-lying urban fabric. At its base lie access to the museum, research library, school and an unrestricted passage to the plaza itself. As this passage branches off, permeating the site, it draws the public through to different points within and around the Plaza del Flamenco, allowing them to witness flamenco rehearsed, studied and celebrated around them.
As a place for artists, the project facilitates the education and presentation of
flamenco. A naturally lit foyer builds anticipation before the audience is brought into an intimate performance space. Conversely, the art can be celebrated in the plaza. Both audience spaces, interior and exterior, share the same stage, a heart around which the Plaza del Flamenco circulates. The performance and continued life of flamenco drive the plan’s organization. In seeking to connect with the public, the spaces within the institution seemingly radiate from the stage.
The Plaza del Flamenco represents the public role within the flamenco culture
of Jerez de la Frontera as one being steeped in history and brought to life by engaging the people.
