    The Hebrew word Seder means

order because the night consists o teen

orderly steps that each Seder ollows. Why

cant each person simply celebrate our

night o liberation as he or she sees t? To

    demonstrate the important lesson that

true reedom is not achieved by everyone

doing whatever he wants, but ollowing theword o God. Despite the seemingly rigid

parameters, go visit any two Jewish homes

and you will not nd two identical Seders.

Each amily adds their own customs and

personality so that, in the end, the Seder

is a charming balance between structure

and spontaneity. This is the secret recipe or

how an ancient story never gets old!

MagidThis is the bread o aiction that our athers ate

in the land o Egypt. Whoever is hungry, let him

come and eat; whoever is in need, let him comeand conduct the Seder o Passover. This year we

are here; next year in the land o Israel. This year

we are slaves; next year we will be ree people.

What makes this night diferentrom all other nights?

On all other nights we eat chametz or

Matzah, but and on this night only Matzah.

On all other nights we eat any kind o

vegetables, but on this night Maror.

On all other nights we do not dip even once, but on this night we do so twice.

On all other nights we eat sitting upright or

reclining, but on this night we all recline.

We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the

Lord, our God, took us out rom there with a

strong hand and with an outstretched arm. I

the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our

athers out o Egypt, then we, our children and

our children's children would have remained en-

slaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even i all o us werewise, all o us understanding, all o us knowing

the Torah, we would still be obligated to discuss

the exodus rom Egypt. Everyone who discusses

the exodus rom Egypt at length is praiseworthy.

It happened that Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua,

Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi

Tarphon were reclining at a Seder in B'nei Berak.

They were discussing the exodus rom Egypt all

that night, until their students came and toldthem: "Our Masters, the time has come or recit-

    ing the morning Shema."

Rabbi Eleazar ben Azaryah said: "I am like a

man o seventy years old, yet I did not succeed

in proving that the exodus rom Egypt must be

mentioned at night-until Ben Zoma explained

it: "It says (Deut. 16:3), 'That you may remember the

day you let Egypt all the days o your lie;' now'the days o your lie' reers to the days, and the

additional word all' indicates the inclusion o

the nights." The sages, however, said: "'The days

o your lie' reers to the this world; and 'all' indi-

cates the inclusion o the days o Messiah."

    Uncover the Matzah and say:

MagidThe central ocus o the Seder is

the section o Magid. Magid ( ( means

to tell and shares the same root as in

    Haggadah ( ( based on Exodus (13:8):

    - vehigad'ta l'bincha: "And you

shall tell your children, on that day, saying:

that on account o this the Lord took me

out o Egypt." However, the same Hebrew

root - - has another meaning as well andthat is to bind, join and connect. What is

the connection between telling a story and

joining together? By recounting the story

o the Exodus, we are doing more than

recalling events that occurred long ago.

Telling our story connects one generation

to the next, joining us to our grandparents

    and our grandchildren.

    Blessed is the Omnipresent One,

blessed is He. Blessed is He who

gave the Torah to His people

    Israel, blessed is He.

The Torah speaks o our children: One is wise, one is wicked, one is simple and one does not

    know how to ask.

The wise one, what does he say? "What are the

testimonies, the statutes and the laws which the

Lord, our God, has commanded you?" (Deut. 6:20)

You, in turn, shall instruct him in the laws o Pass-

over, up to 'one is not to eat any dessert ater the

    Passover Lamb.'

The wicked one, what does he say? "What is

this service to you?" He says 'to you,' but not to

him. By excluding himsel rom the community

he has denied that which is undamental. You,

thereore, blunt his teeth and say to him: "It is be-

cause o this that the Lord did or me when I let

Egypt" (Ex. 13); 'or me' - but not or him; I he had

been there, he would not have been redeemed."

The simple one, what does he say? "What is

this?" Thus you shall say to him: "With a strong

hand the Lord took us out o Egypt, rom the

    house o slaves." (Ex. 13:14)

As or the one who does not know how to ask,

you must initiate him, as it is said: "You shall tell

your child on that day, 'It is because o this that

the Lord did or me when I let Egypt.'" (Ex. 13:8)

One may think that the discussion o the exodus

must be rom the rst o the month. The Torahthereore says, 'On that day.' (Ex. 13:8) 'On that day,'

however, could mean while it is yet daytime; the

Torah thereore says, 'It is because o this.' (Ex. 13:8)

The expression 'because o this' can only be said

when Matzah and Maror are placed beore you.

In the beginning our athers served idols; but

now the Omnipresent One has brought us close

to His service, as it is said: "Joshua said to all the

people: Thus said the Lord, the God o Israel, 'Your

Blessed is He who keeps His promise to Israel,

blessed is He. For the Holy One, blessed is He, cal-

culated the end o the bondage, in order to do as

He had said to our ather Abraham at the "Cov-

they will enslave them and make them sufer, orour hundred years. But I shall also judge the na-

tion whom they shall serve, and ater that they

will come out with great wealth.'" (Genesis 15:13-14)

This is what has stood by our

athers and us. For not just

    one alone has risen against

us to destroy us, but in everygeneration they rise against us

to destroy us; and the Holy One,

blessed be He, saves us rom

    their hand.

to do to our ather Jacob. Pharaoh had issued a decree

to destroy my ather; and he [Jacob] went down to

Egypt and sojourned there, ew in number; and he

"And he went down to Egypt"- orced by Divine decree.

"And he sojourned there" - this teaches that our

ather Jacob did not go down to Egypt to settle,

but only to live there temporarily. Thus it is said,

"They said to Pharaoh, We have come to sojourn

in the land, or there is no pasture or your ser-

vants' ocks because the hunger is severe in the

land o Canaan; and now, please, let your ser-

vants dwell in the land o Goshen." (Gen. 47:4)

"Few in number" - as it is said: "Your athers

went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and

now, the Lord, your God, has made you as numer-

ous as the stars o heaven." (Deut. 10:22)

"And he became there a nation" - this teachesthat Israel was distinctive there.

"Great, mighty" - as it is said: "And the children

o Israel were ruitul and increased abundantly,

and multiplied and became very, very mighty,

and the land became lled with them." (Ex. 1:7)

"And numerous" - as it is said: "I caused you

to thrive like the plants o the eld, and you in-

creased and grew and became very beautiul

your bosom ashioned and your hair grown long,

but you were naked and bare." (Ezekiel 16:6)

The Hebrew word or bad here

also contains the exact opposite meaning,

riendship. The Haggadah is making a

    subtle observation and describing the

origins o Hebrew slavery. At rst theEgyptians beriended the Jews and only

gradually did they begin to institute

    discriminatory laws, persecution and nally

slavery but it started with riendship. This

    pattern has repeated itsel throughout

Jewish history where a host nation invites

Jews in and oers protection, but as the

generations go on, the hospitality runs

out and anti-Semitism begins to appear.

The pattern always ollows Genesis (12:3)"Those who bless you will be blessed and

those who curse you will be cursed." As soon

as the host country begins to curse the Jews

    through discrimination and persecution, its

days are numbered and it soon ollows the

trajectory established rst by the Egyptians:

rom a major world empire to a historical

    ootnote.

Rabbi Yossi the Gallilean said: How do you know

that the Egyptians were stricken by ten plagues

in Egypt, and then were struck by ty plagues

    at the sea?

In Egypt it says o them, "The magicians said to

Pharaoh 'This is the nger o God.' (Ex. 8:15) At thesea it says, "Israel saw the great hand that the

Lord laid against Egypt; and the people eared

the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in

His servant Moses." (Ex. 14:31) Now, how oten were

they smitten by 'the nger'? Ten plagues. Thus

you must conclude that in Egypt they were smit-

ten by ten plagues, and at the sea they were

    smitten by ty plagues.

Rabbi Eliezer said: How do we know that each

individual plague which the Holy One, blessed

be He, brought upon the Egyptians in Egypt

consisted o our plagues? For it is said: "He

sent against them His erce anger, ury, and

indignation, and trouble, a discharge o mes-

sengers o evil" (Psalms 78:49): 'Fury,' is one; 'Indig-

nation,' makes two; 'Trouble,' makes three; 'Dis-

charge o messengers o evil,' makes our. Thus

you must now say that in Egypt they were struckby orty plagues, and at the sea they were strick-

    en by two hundred plagues.

The Passover Lamb that our athers ate during

do so? Because the Omnipresent passed over

our athers' houses in Egypt, as it says, "You shall

say, It is a Passover-ofering to the Lord, because

He passed over the houses o the children o Is-

rael in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians with

a plague, and He saved our houses. And the peo-

    We dont automatically recognize

the two words in "Passover" but the holiday

name is really a combination reerring to

when God "passed over" the Jewish homes

beore the Exodus rom Egypt. The Hebrewword is Pesach and is used not only in

Exodus (12:23) when God "passed over",

was not leavened; or they had been driven out

o Egypt and could not delay, and they had also

not prepared any other provisions." (Ex. 12:39)

This Bitter Herb that we eat or what reason? Be-

cause the Egyptians embittered our athers' lives

and with all manner o service in the eld; all

    The name Jerusalem -

    - contains the word Shalom , the

Hebrew word or Peace.' The worlds holiest

city, Jerusalem - - has the word

at its core which explains why the

Temple was constructed in a very specialmanner: "hammers, chisels or any iron

instruments were not heard in the Temple

when it was being built" (I Kings 6:7). No

instruments o war or violence were not

used so that peace would be built into the

Why should the nations say, "Where, now, is their

    The Hebrew word or connes

    - - is closely related to the word or

    Egypt - meetz-ra-YEEM. On a mystical

level, Egypt symbolizes the agonizing straitsthat constrict us. Each o us occasionally

    nds ourselves trapped, sometimes or

physical reasons, such as poverty or illness

    and sometimes or psychological reasons,

such as depression or despair. Passover is

the estival o hope and aith, teaching us

that the Almighty saves us rom the narrow

    connes.

Praise the Lord, all nations. Extol Him, all peo

ples. For His kindness was mighty over us, and

the truth o the Lord is everlasting. Halleluyah

    Praise God. (Ps. 117)

Give thanks to the Lord, or He is good, or His

    kindness is everlasting.

Let Israel say it, or His kindness is everlasting.Let the House o Aaron say it, or His kindness

is everlasting.Let those who ear the Lord say it, or His kind-

    ness is everlasting. (Ps. 118)

Out o narrow connes I called to God; God

answered me with abounding relie. The Lord is

with me, I will not ear what can man do to me?

The Lord is with me, through my helpers, and I

can ace my enemies. It is better to rely on theLord, than to trust in man. It is better to rely on

the Lord, than to trust in nobles. All nations sur-

round me, but I cut them down in the Name o

the Lord. They surrounded me, they encom-

passed me, but I cut them down in the Name o

the Lord. They surrounded me like bees, yet they

are extinguished like a re o thorns; I cut them

down in the Name o the Lord. My oes pushed

me again and again to all, but the Lord helpedme. God is my strength and song, and this has been my salvation. The sound o joyous song and sal-

vation is in the tents o the righteous: "The right hand o the Lord perorms deeds o valor. The right

hand o the Lord is exalted; the right hand o the Lord perorms deeds o valor." I shall not die, but I

shall live and relate the deeds o God. God has chastised me, but He did not give me over to death.
