The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS has laid the foundation for the new building of the University Workers Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd (Awka). The foundation was laid on Thursday, 29th January, 2015 at the former UNIZIK Bus Stand.
Speaking during the event, the Vice-Chancellor who said that the day was remarkable, also opined that the Co-operative Society has recorded a great success in the University and has been of great succour to the staff in the University. The Co-operative which has resolved to have a facility in their name is a landmark achievement.
Prof. Ahaneku said he is overwhelmed by the commitment of their leaders, and promised to give them all the administrative support needed in order to finish their project in no distant time.
Furthermore, he beckoned on the Director of Anambra State Co-operative, Mr. Samuel Okoli to always assist so that facilities like loans from Federal Government are made accessible to UNIZIK Co-operative Society for the development and growth of humanity. Finally, he laid the foundation stone for the new
building of the University Workers (Awka) Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd. He prayed God to sustain and bless their leaders and members.
The Director of Anambra State Co-operative Society, Mr. Samuel Okoli had earlier expressed joy over the success recorded so far by the UWMCS. He said that UNIZIK has fulfilled the mission of the Co-operative Society. He encouraged them to continue the good work they have started. He added that the mandate of the Co-operative Society which is to create employment in the country, improve the country’s GDP and to make impact in its immediate community has been achieved in UNIZIK.
Mr. Okoli also applauded UWMCS for being the first in the State to erect structure for the Co-operative Society and this has further demonstrated the credibility of its leaders.
Speaking earlier in his welcome remark, the Chairman of UWMCS, Prof. Sam Okeke who gave a background story of the Co-operative Society said the Co-operative started with only 10 members but today has increased to more than 2,500 members.
He added that the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. B. C. E. Egboka approved the space of land for them but the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. J. E. Ahaneku expedited its actualization and appreciated him for it. Explaining further, he referred to the foundation laying as a milestone of a journey with a small beginning, which he tagged: “a journey of faith, resilience and perseverance”. He said the secret of their success is disciplined collective leadership which has culminated in this dream of building of a complex that will contain a meeting hall for the executive members, a mini-shopping mall, a guest house and some offices.
Prof. Okeke expressed appreciation to previous Vice-Chancellors and the current VC, Prof. Ahaneku who he said his enthusiasm toward the Co-operative is unparalleled. He added that he has received numerous awards for a distinguished service and that the House of Representative also gave UWMCS a national award.
Finally, Prof. Okeke assured members that the project will not affect their ability to be granted loan and as well as payment of dividend.
The Marist Brothers Group of Schools Management, Nteje on Monday 2nd February, 2015 paid a convivial visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku, FAS. Led by the Principal Brother Mark Iwu, the Team emphasized that they came to congratulate the VC on his appointment bearing in mind that the Ahaneku family is one of the great pillars of the school. It was also an opportunity to learn
from UNIZIK as an institution that absorbs their products. In form of question and answer on how he has attained such a great height which will be model for students, Prof. Ahaneku went down memory lane to recall his early days up to the moment.
The Vice-Chancellor reeled out the achievements and successes of the University right from inception especially the ASUTECH days and aligned the history of
the University with his entry as a fresh Ph.D. holder / Lecturer in the early nineties. Responding to a question from the visitors on his background, the VC explained that as any other young boy he attended secondary school in Imo State under the guidance of strict parents who were teachers. On passing out he proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his B.sc, M.Sc. and Ph.D. He explained
Quote: Accept the challenges so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory. – General George S. Patton. 3
that in the course of his studies in Ibadan, his performance earned him a sponsored Ph.D. programme by the World Renowned drug maker Pfizer. Prof. Ahaneku explained that due to the sponsorship, he dedicated his time to the research, the result of which he is reaping today as a researcher/scientist.
Prof. Ahaneku, who also explained to the visitor that he acquired his Ph.D. at 28yrs and became a Professor at 35, said the secret of all his success is hardwork. He joined ASUTECH in 1991 which was renamed Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 1992 before the takeover by the Federal Government. The VC praised the then Governor of Anambra State,
Dr. Ezeife for his foresight in assisting the University. In further information, Prof. Ahaneku said his life as a Researcher/Scientist took him to Tokyo, Japan where he resided for some years. This research further took him to the USA in continuation of his research work and other countries.
Drawing from his experience as a successful scholar, he prayed that young students should surpass his achievements so far as they are ready to work hard and mortgage comfort. Prof. Ahaneku also explained that young people should set targets for themselves. On a personal level he said he set a target to obtain his Ph.D. at 25 but could not achieve the target
as he eventually obtained his Ph.D. at 28. But his target to attain professorship at 35yrs materialized. He informed that scholarship requires discipline.
As to how his experience can help young ones, Prof. Ahaneku cited the Marist brothers group of schools as exemplary in moulding the character of children in their care. He eulogized the way they train children academically and spiritually which culminates in having courageous and independent-minded products that went through the crucible of good tutorship. The zero tolerance of Marist schools for all forms of vices earned them the Vc’s praise for their selfless life in training the young ones.
There is no better insurance than the University Workers (Awka) Multipurpose Co-operative Society. This was said by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS when the executive members of the Co-operative paid him a visit to present the award given to them by the House of Representatives.
Welcoming them, the Vice-Chancellor said the award shows the Hallmark of Excellence. According to him, the recognition has shown that the Co-operative Society has done well with credible leaders. Also, that they have been of great succor to staff in the University. He finally thanked God for the University and the progress recorded so far, while praying God to sustain all.
