These were the emphatic words of UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS during the Igbo Language Symposium 5, held recently at the P.G School Auditorium on the theme “Tone in Igbo”.

Prof. Ahaneku who sat through the first lecture delivered by the Co-organizer of the programme, Dr. B. M. Mbah from Department of Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian Languages, University of Nigeria Nsukka, on the “Down step tone”, observed that what was presented in almost a scientific way was deeper than what we had hitherto known of the Language. He noted that some who are of Igbo origin did not have the privilege of learning the Language at home or being

taught the Language academically.

Commending the organizers for their efforts and for sponsoring the programme all on their own over the years, he promised that the University will be involved in the next edition of the programme which will be the 6th. He called the event, a classy and wonderful programme worthy to be kept alive. He opined that whether at an international or national programme, he was always willing to express his Igboness and be part of any academic research to move the Igbo Language and culture to the forefront.

Speaking earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Rev. Fr. Prof. B. C. Obiefuna who declared the event open stressed that dreams as inspiration may not material or tangible but can transform lives and make proper meaning when fully translated. He commended the organizers and encouraged them to keep the dream of sustaining the Igbo Language alive. In his words, “Don’t let your dream die, no matter the challenges you face”. In his vote of thanks, the main organizer of the programme, Dr. Chinedu Uchechukwu, Department of Linguistics, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka expressed appreciation to the Dean for his words of encouragement. He showered encomiums on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahaneku who insisted on sitting through the one hour of the first lecture. He noted the VC’s promise of help for the edition and expressed profound gratitude to the VC. According to him, since the inception of the programme, Prof. Ahaneku was the first VC to attend the symposium despite all talks on all quarters to keep the flag of Igbo Language and Culture flying.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University has taken first position in the recent American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) competition by Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationists held in Lagos Nigeria.

The Head of Department, Dr. Eliseus Okwy Akpunonu disclosed this when he led some members of the Department on a courtesy visit to the office of the Vice-

Chancellor to formally present to him certificates of participation.

Receiving the team, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ahaneku expressed appreciation to members of the team for making the University proud. He urged participants not to relent in their commitment to moving the University to a higher pedestal.

He assured them of the University’s support to the Association. He commended staff and mentors in the Department for their efforts before and during the competition. He urged them to continue putting the University in the lime light and promoting excellence.

About eleven universities in Nigeria participated in the exercise, in which UNIZIK emerged first position this qualifying for the Imperial Barel Award in March, 2015.


Accreditation Panel comprising the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Management paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Vice-Chancellor to kick start the 2014 accreditation exercise for programs in the Faculties.

Receiving members of the Panel, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ahaneku represented by the Deputy vice-chancellor (Academic), Prof. Charles Esimone expressed gratitude to members of the team for their visit to UNIZIK. He described the visit as an amalgamation of scholars from the geopolitical zones of the country.

He expressed hope that the visit will necessitate endorsement of the University programmes by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC). He prayed God to give them the grace to work tirelessly. The Chairman of the Panel, Prof. Wilfred Iyiegbuniwe said the visit is geared towards accrediting the various programmes in the faculties.

occasion was part of the grand finale of this year’s Annual

General Conference of the Institute held in Ilorin-Kwara

State.

By this accolade, Arc. Oduche Damian has been recognized

and enrolled as a Senior Practitioner of the Architectural

Profession in Nigeria.

Arc. Damian Oduche graduated from the University of

Nigeria in 1983 and he joined the University as Asst. Chief

Architect in 1993.

This is to inform UNIZIK staff that the Bureau in the

discharge of its Constitutional mandate as provided in CAP 56 LFN OF 1990 has embarked on the

verification of assets of Government fiunctionaries. In continuation of this exercise, it has become necessary

to physically inspect and verify the assets declared by

The purpose of this exercise is to physically ascertain

the details of your assests and liabilities and create a data bank of the assets of all public functionaries of

Government, for easy financial profiling, assets

tracking and monitoring in line with the present Administration’s pro-active approach in the anti-

corruption drive.
