Recently we received two best airport awards from travel portal Australian Business Traveller and the Travel+Leisure magazine. The accolades demonstrate that Hong Kong International Airport is a favourite airport for a diverse range of customers, whether they are business travellers looking for premium services or leisure travellers with kids and family members.

As a prominent gateway connecting the city to the world, HKIA welcomes thousands of travellers everyday from all over the world. In order to cater to their different tastes and preferences, we have carefully studied their profiles, and have unveiled corresponding facilities and services that best suit their

needs. For example, we have nursing rooms for parents, prayer rooms for the religious and green menus for vegetarians. More recently, we have installed hot water stations for passengers who wish to make warm beverages, as well as a new relaxation corner for those who long for a respite from their busy travel schedules.

All of these are small, yet important facilities that touch the hearts of our passengers. But as with any service business, people are always the key to success. I believe what ultimately sets us apart from our peers is our dedicated and professional airport staff who continually strive for service excellence, whether at the forefront as customer service officers addressing traveller’s concerns face-to-face, or behind-the-scenes to ensure a safe, pleasant journey for our passengers.

Therefore, we continued to recognise outstanding airport staff with the Customer Service Excellence Programme. This year, nearly 500 of our colleagues have been awarded for going above and beyond their duties to help passengers in need, such as helping a little girl who got lost at the terminal to locate her mother or providing timely medical assistance to an elderly woman at the boarding gate. A team of airport staff even helped save a toddler who was trapped in a car under the scorching sun. These stories underscore the service commitment of the airport staff and serve as examples and inspiration for others to follow.

Let us all continue to strengthen our culture of service excellence that makes travelling through HKIA a most enjoyable experience.

A family bound for New Zealand was found to be carrying a toy gun in their carry-on baggage during security screening. The parents explained that the children need to carry it around for their journey. However, such objects were prohibited in hand baggage.

Kin-keung was informed of the situation and went to assist the family. Upon a close inspection, he eventually permitted the toy to be carried in their checked-in baggage. However, the family had to go through the check-in procedures again. Given the tight boarding time, Kin-keung stepped in to help speed up the check-in process, and eventually the family was able to board their flight on time.

A small act can touch a traveller’s heart. An elderly woman accidentally tripped over when she threw trash near the boarding gate, resulted in dizziness and acute back pain. Jeffrey, who witnessed the incident, rushed to her and called for an ambulance. He also comforted her elderly companion who was in shock at the accident.

Jeffrey accompanied the ladies to the hospital, helped them contact their families in the UK, as well as arranged accommodations in a nearby hotel for the lady’s companion.

On the next evening, he learnt that the injured lady had been discharged from the hospital and was able to fly back to London. Upon their arrival at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), Jeffrey took the initiative to assist the senior ladies to go through the check-in process and to ensure that they were safely on board. His big heart was later recognised in a compliment letter.

On Christmas Eve, Chloe received an e-mail from an Australian professor who was at HKIA with his son. He wrote that his young son received a gingerbread man stuffed toy from airport staff as souvenir a few years ago and became attached to it. However, as time passed, the toy became tattered and worn out. He tried to find a similar one before the gingerbread man fell apart but to no avail.

Upon receiving the email, Chloe had been asking around to see if her colleagues still had some stocks of the toy. Until one day, she noticed a colleague had a similar gingerbread man on the desk that matched the professor’s description. Without hesitation, she searched into the airport’s warehouse meticulously and finally uncovered two gingerbread men. The boy was so touched when he received the toys.

On a bustling summer day, a Japanese lady was shopping with her elderly mother at MUJI. The mother headed to the washroom while the lady went to settle the payment. After some time, the mother had not returned and the lady was getting anxious. She approached Yink to explain her situation, adding that their flight would be boarding soon.

Yink immediately helped to search around for the elderly but to no avail. Suddenly he had a hunch that she might have mixed up the stores when returning from the washroom. Yink was proven to be right as he located the elderly mother in a nearby store and the two ladies were then reunited.

Lok was on her way to work when she suddenly saw a lady lost her balance in a crowd of fans who were chasing a celebrity. The lady lost her grip on a baby stroller which carried a sleeping toddler. Just when the stroller started rolling down a flight of stairs, Lok leapt into action to grab hold of it before it descended further.

Though the mother was agitated and had a few scratches on her hand, the baby was safe. Lok helped the lady apply bandage on the injured hand and meanwhile comforted the crying baby. Shortly afterwards, the lady returned with her husband to express their gratitude for Lok’s unconditional assistance.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport rolled out a series of “multi-dimensional experiences”-themed activities at its Terminal 2 in July to spread the summer spirit.

At the forefront were the mesmerising 3D Trick Art installations that attracted children and adults alike to take surreal pictures, with an adjacent Lomoment station that allowed them to print the photos out instantly as souvenirs. Another highlight was a 3D printing technology exhibition that demonstrated how replicas of everyday items such as shoes, toys, flower vases and coins could be instantly produced. In addition, passengers could spend time in the virtual world with the 3D motion-controlled gaming systems that mirrored their actions while bowling or playing football.

In fostering a greener workplace, the Airport Authority (AA) rolled out a “Go Green @ AA Office” campaign. Kicking off the campaign was the “Switch off your computer” competition, in which snap checks were conducted on all workstations of AA staff between April and June to determine if the computers were left idle after regular office hours.

The competition delivered outstanding results. The number of workstations and desktop computers left powered on overnight dropped up to 26%. As a result, around 67,300 kilowatt-hours of electricity were saved, equivalent to 43,000 kg of carbon emissions. The best performing departments were presented with hampers of Fair Trade goods for their exceptional results. Building on the initial success, this programme will be extended to the end of the year.
