FROM THE CHAIR Issue 2017/7 JULY 2017 MG Car Club, Cape Town Centre, Suite 276, Private Bag x16 Constantia 7848 www.mgcc-ct.co.za We had only been back from the Cape Centres Gathering in Wilderness for a little over a week when we heard the news of the devastating fires in the Southern Cape. Between June 6 and June 10, fires destroyed more than 600 structures in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, when gale force winds exceeding 90km/h made firefighting extremely difficult. Members of the MG South Cape Club and the Garden Route Motor Club were amongst those who lost homes and property, including their precious, classic cars in the fires. At least 7 people have lost their lives in the fires, including members of the firefighting team. Up to 10 000 people were evacuated from their homes and there is an urgent need for assistance in the area. In this vein, your committee has decided to donate a substantial sum of club funds to support the Knysna Rotary Club in their work assisting the most needy in the area. In the Western Cape we have, at last had the beginnings of our winter rainfall and although it started very late, we have had substantial rainfall in June. Let’s hope that it continues and the dams begin to fill. When the rain clears, even for a day or two, get your scarves and beanies on and take your MG out for a run. My thanks go to Mike Johnson and committee members who took care of the June Natter while Shirley and I were away. In the second week of June we participated in the Milligan Rally which is organised by the EPVCC. I navigated for Shirley who was driving her Citroen Light 15, while Roger Lewis drove his MGB with Andrea navigating for him. Roger and Andrea finished the rally in 16th place, while Shirley and I finished 10th. The Milligan’s is a challenging rally to participate in but it’s also extremely great fun. Give it a try! On 11th July we will be holding our Christmas in July Natter which has become a tradition with fruit mince pies and Dieter’s famous gluhwein – please come along and enjoy the Christmas spirit and company of your fellow MG members. Keep an eye on The Breed for details of other events, there is lots in store for you to take part in. Keep warm. Philip 1

VETERANS’ RUN TO HOUT BAY - MAY George Toop

The day dawned calm with beautiful sunny weather. After the usual meet-up and tyre kicking at Constantia Village we drove the scenic route to Hout Bay harbour. Not all those attending wanted to go on the boat ride to Duiker Island; these folk enjoyed a little shopping at the harbour stalls.

The weather was perfect for the 40 minute boat trip to the island. Due to the calm conditions the boat went to within 10 metres of the island, giving those on-board a great view of the seals. Many seals swam and frolicked in the aqua seawater. Duiker Island is a sanctuary to Cape Fur seals as well as many birds such as Cape and Black Cormorants, Black Backed Gulls and Kelp Gulls. The Island is inhabited mostly by immature male seals waiting until they reach the ages of 8-12 years before they head off to breeding colonies. The seals do not breed on the island itself, as the seas are too rough for pups to survive. On return to the harbour we all enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Lookout Restaurant, which has stunning views.

CAPE CENTRES GATHERING IN WILDERNESS - Ronnie Brown

6

Being our first MG gathering this was very exciting for us and greatly looked forward to. We have never taken our TD further than Franschhoek so we had no idea how she was going to perform on the longer distances. She performed beautifully to our amazement and we were very proud of her. We decided to leave a day earlier with the majority of the CT Club and stop overnight in Ladismith. Our route took us through Franschhoek, Villiersdorp, Robertson, Montague and onto Ladismith along the R62. A very relaxed drive done in comfort. In Ladismith we stayed at the Albert Manor Guest House - a beautiful, historic building with doting hosts, Elizabeth & Bennie Stroebel. Dinner was enjoyed at the local restaurant, Andri’s. A very festive evening with much hilarity.

After breakfast we all had a leisurely start with our route taking us over the Huisriviers Pass and Outeniqua Pass into George and onto Wilderness. On the two Passes the James’s introduced the Champion’s ritual of stopping at the top of a Pass for a sherry. This is definitely a tradition to adopt for all future MG tours!

Registration at the Wilderness Hotel was a very slick affair with every entrant receiving a wonderful goodie bag.

The Gathering started off with a big bang with sundowners at the Poolside Bar. So much so that the bar ran out of a few wines from the get-go. After navigating what was available in the wine store we went on to a great dinner in the Palm Restaurant, meeting our host Bruce Henderson. After dinner the CT Club descended on the hotel bar, which very soon ran out of Amarula!

Friday morning started with an early breakfast in preparation for a ‘treasure hunt’ tour to our lunch venue. The tour took us into Sedgefield looking for mosaic sculptures, visiting the various beautiful beaches in Sedgefield, stopping at the Sedgefield Classic Cars showroom and onto the little village of Rheenendal, for our lunch at Totties. What a fabulous venue! After lunch an afternoon of games (boule, croquet and bokdrol spoeg!) was held in the field adjacent to the restaurant, with South Cape coming out as the over-all winners of the afternoon. The day ended off with sundowners and a braai at the Palm Restaurant back at the Wilderness Hotel.

On Saturday most participants opted for a later start, all going off in various directions to markets, classic car show rooms and museums. A few of us decided to skip the markets and go to the Knysna classic car showrooms and to visit the Bruce Parnell Collection. We had not done this before and were not disappointed. Brian Bruce gave us a personal tour, telling us about every individual car he has. He was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A morning well spent. On our way back to Wilderness for the ‘driving test’ we stopped in at the village of Hoekwil to try out South Africa’s top rated cheese cake. It deserved its title! Unfortunately the driving test was cancelled due to heavy rain that set in for the afternoon.

The gala evening was held on Saturday with the theme “Beauty and the Beast”. There were some delightful costumes, with the winner being ‘Mrs Tea Pot’. The band, Cloud 9, kept everyone on the dance floor until late. What a wonderful weekend, superbly organised by the South Cape Centre.
