We will be able to announce the contract builder once this meeting has concluded. Stay tuned for more information to come. We have now sent home information about our new parent communication program called Compass. All families will have received a letter providing information, including personal family user names/passwords, and user handbook information ( available here) about Compass, which is successfully used in many primary and secondary schools for student attendance, achievement data (reports), conferences (parent/teacher interviews), school organisation/timetables, and payments and permission (to come later in the year). Compass is simply downloaded for free on Smartphones, iPads, Tablets, or computers, by parents and school staff, and is easy to navigate and use. We hope our parent community embraces this new technology. It is encourage that all parents now enter their child’s absence through Compass (illness, medical/dental appointments, etc.), which is directly linked to their teacher’s roll. Family holiday requests/extended absences are still required to be completed via our office. Please see our office staff if you need any assistance with Compass. Our School Choir performed so well at the Arty Farty Festival in Heidelberg on Sunday. Mrs Newell prepared, rehearsed and conducted our choir to this brilliant performance of singing and signing! Thank you to the many families who came along to support our school. We are so proud of this group of students for their enthusiasm and commitment to our school choir. Please don’t let your child miss out on an incursion/excursion… Throughout the year, our staff organise fantastic incursions & excursions for our students, in line with their study focus for the term. Sometimes there is a cost involved, which is purely to pay for the event’s costs/charge. In order for each child to be able to participate or attend each event, it is imperative for parents to complete and return the permission form and make payment by the due date. It is extremely difficult for our office to receive payments/forms on the morning of the event and ensure students don’t miss out. Often, we are obliged to advise the event company of our attending numbers for each incursion or excursion prior to the event date, therefore students who don’t return their forms or make payment by the due date may miss out. Please ensure you read your notices and return the signed permission form and make payment by the due date.

Enjoy your week, Julie Dunn

Name the Art work:

Use these clues and discover the name of the mystery Art

work.

The drawing is created in pen and ink on paper. It was drawn by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490. The drawing is based on the ideal proportions of a man's body.

It is a picture of a male figure standing in two positions, which are superimposed (drawn over the top of each other). The figure's arms and legs are drawn in two different positions, while the rest of the body stays in one position. The figure is drawn standing inside both a circle and a square.

Tell Mrs Allibon the answer and win house points.

Four ways to respond to kids who love the last word

Often kids like to have the last word. I liken this to them throwing down an ‘imaginary rope’ (the last word, a

taunt, a jibe, a joke) for parents to pick up.

The last word can often be a child’s way of saving face in front of siblings, friends, or simply themselves.

The hard part of dealing with kids is to ‘pick your battles’ and ignore some of their ‘last wordedness’ and the

verbal comments they throw our way.

It is not suggested to ignore all taunts or rude remarks but there are many occasions when we should just leave

the ‘imaginary rope’ where it lies. Sometimes when we ‘pick up the rope’ we turn into a child, with comments

and remarks being returned.

‘Throwing the rope’ is so effective as behind most conflict between kids and adults are the deeper issues of:

Power (“I want to make you do this”),

Position (“I’m the adult so you should listen to me”) and

Prestige (“I want others to think I’m doing a good parenting job”).

Arguments, last-wordedness or comeback lines, which are often about kids saving face, threaten our position or

prestige as parents. “You can’t say that to me, I am the adult,” is the type of thinking that brings us undone every

time.

They are also a way of kids saying that I will comply to you but on my terms, which is about power.

Four alternatives to picking up the rope:

1. Stop, smile, ignore and walk away.

2. If the issue is important, choose the right time and place to talk to your child about their behaviour.

3. If it’s not important, let it pass. Some kids simply value the fight, so don’t fight.

4. Use humour to diffuse the situation. Self-deprecating humour works well; sarcasm doesn’t work.

Next time a child ‘throws the rope’ by having the last word or using a quick throw-away line, realise what is

happening. Look at the imaginary rope, smile and refuse to pick it up. That is the adult thing to do. Hard work,

but essential if we are going to be successful at bringing out the best in kids’ behaviour.
