Caring for our environment: Nude Food Lunch: Tomorrow at 12.15pm Yes once again we will be talking about our whole school approach to minimise rubbish in the playground and ways in which we can sort food wrappings appropriately to ensure they can be recycled. World Teacher’s Day: Tomorrow World Teachers' Day provides a chance to support our teachers and the crucial work they do. On this day people acknowledge the valuable role teachers play in the lives of students of all ages. World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in countries all over the world. The day allows students, parents and community members to show their appreciation for teachers and the positive impact they make on the community and society. Normal School Day on Cup Eve, Monday 31st October Please remember that Monday is a normal school day. If your child will not be attending school for any reason on that day, please ensure you enter an Absence Parental Approval via Compass. Full instructions to complete this can be found on our school website: http://www.beaups.vic.edu.au/page/132/Compass-Parent-Portal Working Bee on Sunday 23rd October A huge thank you to Vanessa Fitzgerald, Angela Collins and all the families who came along last Sunday to rejuvenate the garden area along Emily Street. So much was achieved. The garden will emerge as a wonderful place for our students to enjoy. (see photos below) Thank you to the following families who helped on the day: Armstrong, Collins, Fitzgerald, Lu, Crew, Carullo, Cox, Becker, Overton, Carullo, McGregor, Jose, Heath and staff members Mrs Skewes, Mrs Lamb and Mr Dawes. Practice Emergency Evacuation to Beaumaris Reserve Yesterday all students, teachers, administration staff, parents and visitors to the school completed a practice emergency evacuation to Beaumaris Reserve located behind the Beaumaris Library and Community Centre. The teachers discussed with the students that there may be a need to leave the school grounds in an emergency. Beaumaris Reserve is our relocation site. This year our students and teachers have practised the routines for an internal lock down, on site evacuation to the Edith Street boundary of the oval and an off site evacuation to Beaumaris Reserve. The safety of our students is our first priority.

Sheryl M. Skewes Louise Neave Principal Assistant Principal New Garden Area Here's some photos from the recent working bee. We were so grateful for the large turn out to help with the start of the new garden area and in the other parts of the school. A huge thank you to all who attended it was a fantastic morning with a great start to the new garden area. It's very exciting that the Yates products from the grant have arrived to help start the process of developing the soil in the garden beds for planting at a later date (picture of boxes). Small works will be completed in the coming weeks prior to the final working bee event. Well Done Katelyn! "Its been a great opportunity to play Touch Football for Victoria. It is an an amazing experience and I would encourage anyone to follow their dreams and have a go. I have made lots of new friends and today we are on an excursion to Freemantle Prison with the other states". Katelyn Randall

Ellie Hilton Melbourne Victory Soccer Club Visit

This Friday 28 October we are very lucky at Beaumaris Primary School to have a visit from Melbourne Victory Soccer Club. We are so excited to have four players in attendance, three of who are Melbourne Victory Vice Captain Leigh Broxham, Lawerence Thomas and George Howard. They will be in attendance at our school from 2pm where they will be running clinics with our extremely excited Prep students and 1V. The players will then be asked some hard-hitting questions from our Year 6 students at assembly. There will be a quick photo opportunity and autograph signing session for any students (and parents) throughout the school who are soccer followers or Melbourne Victory fans. We can’t wait !

Sustainability Tip Walk, scoot or ride to school to lower the pollution and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere Kids Teaching Kids Conference On Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 of October, eight students from the Sustainability Team represented Beaumaris Primary School at the 10th annual Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference. We presented our micro-bat project to other primary and secondary school students. In our workshop, we taught students from other schools. Our focus was ‘What are micro-bats?’ and ‘How to make micro-bat hotels’. We also played games with them to demonstrate echolocation and what it is like to be a micro-bat. We also participated in other school’s workshops where we learnt about water saving, water filtering, not littering, water catchments and food webs. Thank you to Imogen, Heath, Jodie, Michelle, Emily, Neil and Rob for transporting us and a big thank you to Miss Cooper, Mrs Robinson, Miss Morecroft and Ms McManus for helping us prepare our workshop and supporting us on the day. It was an awesome day and we had a lot of fun!

LEVEL LOW DOWN Prep

This fortnight in Prep our maths learning intentions have been lots of fun while we learn how to tell the time to the hour. We have made our own paper plate clocks and tested each other on our time knowledge. We have been loving Circus Skills every Friday, as we learn lots of new and exciting tricks to practice. This Friday we are having a special visit from some players from the Melbourne Victory Football Club. Thanks to Jane and Steph (parents from Prep M) for organising this special visit.

Year One What a packed week! We finish the week with a Day for Daniel on Friday. This national initiative ‘helps students develop strategies that will help to inform them of potentially unsafe situations and then navigate a safe outcome’. All students are encouraged to wear the colour red. The highlight of our week (possibly term) was our excursion to Chesterfield Farm on Tuesday. Here is some feedback: Tom: The best part was the Emus playing tiggy. Lilly: I liked the burnt-pancake brown camel. Winston: I liked the bumpy tractor ride. Isla: I enjoyed patting the baby animals. Johnny: My favourite part was the pigs, especially the tiny black one.

Year Two

This week, in their writing sessions, the Year 2s have been exploring different forms of poetry. We have particularly enjoyed learning about the structure of Cinquain and Diamante poems. Here are two examples of our poems:

MINECRAFT WINTER Destruction, construction Frosty, bright Mining, running, building Ski-ing, snowball fighting, sledding Minecraft is so awesome Icicles, snowflakes, vacation, family Sleeping, dozing, eating Swimming, suntanning, sweltering Awesome, dangerous Hot, sunny Construction Summer By Angus By Lene

This Friday we are having a whole school ‘Nude Food’ Picnic. Family and friends are invited to join our students on the oval from 12.15pm-1.15pm (weather permitting).

Year Three This week in Year 3 we had an exciting trip to the local library to take part in a writer’s workshop session run by no other than author Leigh Hobbs. Leigh has created a range of works of children’s literature that often feature quirky characters such as Old Tom, Horrible Harriot, Fiona the Pig and Mr Chicken. During the workshop we learnt how to draw some of Leigh’s characters as well as even design some of our own. Leigh was very passionate about sharing his love of drawing with us and made us realise it is not as hard as it looks. He also taught us about the importance of celebrating the differences between our drawings and encouraged us to incorporate our own ideas. We can’t wait to use some of the skills Leigh taught us to improve our own creative writing pieces. Thank you Leigh, we had an amazing time! You can find out more about Leigh Hobbs through his website: http://www.leighhobbs.com/

Year Four What an excitingly busy week the Year 4 team has had. We have been busy planning our MasterChef meals and

especially shopping at the Victorian Markets. Thank you to all the parent helpers that came to assist the children with the shopping. We have also had a visit from the BC Dental informing us about caring for our teeth. On Tuesday we were very lucky to visit the Beaumaris Library where we met and talked to the author Leigh Hobbs. We all learnt how to draw ‘Old Tom’.

Year Five

This week the students have been unpacking scarcity and the role of work in our society. All Year Five students were involved in the Resource Scarcity Game with the objective to demonstrate the concept of scarcity and the issue of using resources wisely and practising trading. Through discussion the students made the connection between the demand for goods and services exceeding the supply, and that human wants tend to be unlimited, but human, natural, and capital resources are limited. On the topic of economics, during maths students have been exploring money and financial plans. They used catalogues to practise buying products with a budget. Students were expected to look at the 'specials' to ensure they were making the most sensible choice to save money. We were practising using our number skills such as addition and multiplication to calculate totals and change required. We have a lot of events coming up in Year 5 in the next couple of weeks. Tomorrow we have a

whole school Nude Food picnic. All family and friends are welcome. Students are encouraged to bring lunch that does not have any packaging or wrappers. Next week all Year 5 students in the network will be going to Dendy Cinemas to view the work that the Resilience Team have been developing. Please ensure that you have been on Compass to approve the permission forms and view all upcoming events .

Year Six

This week the whole school will be supporting “Day for Daniel”. Everyone will be looking at videos and completing activities on how to stay safe in our community. All the students will be wearing a touch of red. This Friday we will be having a Nude Food picnic on the oval. It is important for everyone to make an effort. Please note canteen orders are not nude food. The Year sSx students are training hard for the Lacrosse tournament. We have been very lucky to have Garret from the Lacrosse Victoria come and teach us skills. This Friday will be our last class of family life. We are coming close to finishing our Economic and Health rotations and will be starting our last ERP’s soon. The Media Team

SunSmart

As it is term 4, we need to be sun smart and remember our hats and

sunscreen in order to play outside. Camp Australia provides SPF 50 plus

sunscreen, but we do not provide hats. Children are encouraged to bring

their school hats to after school care, but if that's too tricky for some

children, parents are welcome to provide us with a spare wide-brimmed

bucket hat that can have the child's name on it and can be kept at the

service so no one misses out on outside play!

Camp Australia's Junior Global Citizenship Bangladesh Program

Our Term 4 program helps children see themselves as global citizens who

can contribute to a peaceful, just and sustainable world. We are celebrating

cultural diversity by learning about people's lives in Bangladesh.

As Camp Australia's Christmas collection, our service along with all Camp

Australia services nationally, will be creating handmade gifts (calico school

bags, bookmarks and friendship bracelets) for 7,500 primary school children

in Bangladesh!

Christmas Donations

Christmas is coming up at the end of the term and OSHC is in need of a

Christmas tree!

If you have a spare Christmas tree, lights, tinsel, decorations, etc. and you

wish to donate them to our service, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you and see you at OSHC!
