EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Trendsetters, Blue skies, open water and lots of sunshine. Summer times are times for freedom, allowing oneself the space to relax and explore one›s creativity.

And creativity knows no boundaries! So this summer, I explored various styles, especially with my hair!! One day you would see me wearing a head scarf, another day you would see me adorning a hair piece inspired by “Harem Al-sultan” and on another you could catch me with flowers in my hair!!! Yes flowers!! And why not!? It is fantastic to feel the freedom once again, the freedom to explore and just be. Though summer is over, I surely hope we can all carry its spirit with us, at least for a while longer.. Welcome back everybody, Till next issue,

Zeina

NOUF AL-HAJRI

Whether you’re on a vacation or a staycation you should be having fun while we are still in Summer, It is the rainbow of all seasons. This year, there are no boundaries for colours, mixing and matching and prints. Be bold in mixing and if you need inspiration, turn on page 50 for Alexander Mirjais designs and feast your imagination with his timeless art.

CHADI MOUFIED

After the summer vacation it has been great to get straight into work with a more positive perspective. I hope to keep that positivity througout the rest of the year. If dark days come by we can always close our eyes and think back to the sunny days and feel the warmth that blessed us this summer!

SIMON BALSOM

Welcome, Summer Ghost. “We know that in September, we will wander through the warm winds of summer’s wreckage. We will welcome summer’s ghost”, wrote Henry Rollins. And what a summer it was. Here’s hoping you’ve all captured and retained the spirit of your time as we move forward to cooler days with minds full of fresh ideas. Refreshed and reloaded for September we’ve brought together plenty to fuel your passions, and to satiate our own.

ZAINEB AL-MOSAWI

September is one of those months where I stop to reflect on the year so far and on what is to come. I evaluate my goals and achievements and seek to continue to strive towards them in the best possible way. I recommend doing the same... Assess your priorities and ambitions. Recognise the tools at your disposal. Follow your ambitions and keep yourself passionate with all the things you enjoy!

Since 1837, Hermès has been a symbol of complimentary opposites. It embraces progress but values history, was founded by men and inspired by women and is an emblem of fashion as much as they are concerned with the environment. The iconic Hermès scarves were first produced on the hundredth anniversary of the brand in 1937. The idea was proposed by Robert Dumas-Hermès. Hermès’ founder, Thierry Hermès originally produced saddles and harnesses, an element that is evidently immortalised as they are frequently featured on the scarves and on the logo itself.

Art and Fashion join forces in the Hermès house. Hermès creative directors scout artists from around the world to create original designs for each scarf. As a result, the vast collection of designs could hardly be more diverse. roughly 50 artists submit their pieces but only 20 are produced per year, while the rest are kept in storage for possible future releases. Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermès said, “Every scarf has a story,” a story reflecting a historical event, a contemporary trend, a fantasy or a cultural illustration from a unique perspective.

Artists, rather than fashion designers, with different backgrounds and individual styles, illustrate them. Artist Hugo Grygkar designed the first Hermès scarf illustration, ‘Jeu des Omnibus et Dames Blanches,’ in 1937, for the 100th anniversary of the brand. It depicts a group of men and women playing a card game and surrounded by rings of omnibuses. The ‘white

ladies’ or ‘Dames Blanches’ referenced in the title was also the name of one of the omnibus companies as well as the name of a fashionable card game from the time. This piece displays contemporary trends and outstanding technique. Somewhere between an encapsulated talent and a faithful gesture, the Hermes brand offers more than a scarf; it offers a statement.

Six generations of Hermès family members have managed the French fashion house. The family’s values of embracing progress, supporting the craftsmanship and fine arts are still clearly evident in the quality and imagination embodied in each scarf.

They pioneered the textile of silk twill; known as ‘carré’ silk, which Hermès scarf users will all agree, offers a superior draping style and flexibility of uses than other fabrics. Grace Kelly was once spotted using an Hermès ‘carré’ silk as a stylish sling after having broken an arm!

Page 18: Issue 54 - September 2013

16 THETALK / September / 2013

The designs have taken into account artistic evolution as well as historic events. For instance, American history has been reflected from the Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America, to the Statue of Liberty to Hurricane Katrina. The influence of art styles from baroque to modern art can be traced through the collection of designs in the past 76 years. Since 1978, under the management of Jean-Louis, ‘the motifs have become more abstract, and the illustrations sometimes resemble a puzzle,’ - intriguing its costumers all the more.

Although the vast majority of the scarves were designed by artists, many of the Hermès family members tried their hand, including robert Dumas-Hermès and his son, Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermès.

The attention to detail of the scarves alone justifies their value, as Hermès takes craftsmanship and quality painfully serious.

MAIN FEATurE

Each scarf contains approximately 27 colours, which are manually printed one by one and allowing enough time between each layer to dry before applying the next one. ‘A design broken up into thirty colours requires between 400 and 600 hours of engraving.’

The printers, who produce the scarves in the factory, experiment with specific tones and colours before deciding on the perfect one for the final productions. ‘The ennobling of the cloth gives it its touch, and hand rolling the

hems completes the making of the carré.’ The meticulous production lasts approximately 18 months per design.

The French fashion house takes the environment into consideration and was awarded the 2002 First Prize for Economic and Clean Technology at the Pullutec fair in Lyon. A precise calculation of the quantity of colour needed for each print allows the brand to diminish the waste of colouring materials and consumption of water.

Hermès FactsThe scarves have appeared with celebrities on the cover of magazines and even on a British stamp of Queen Elizabeth II in 1956.

Famous icons including Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Maria Callas and Madonna have sported the iconic embellishment. Hermes has catered to the privileged since 1837.

The scarf and purse go hand in hand, as it is not uncommon to see the pair combined on the arms of trend-setters in fashion capitols. The most iconic purses were named after two iconic women, Grace Kelly and Jane Birkin.

The Kelly bag received its name after Grace Kelly attempted to hide her baby bump with her Sac à Dépêches Hermès purse.

The Birkin bag was inspired by Jane Birkin who pitched the idea to then-designer, Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermès, on a chance encounter.

Ihad the pleasure of speaking to Abeer Yousif Al-Safran and Abeer Khalid AlJamaz, the women behind the Abeer 2 Centre for care of intellectually disabled children. Their 16-year volunteering experience began with a very inspirational story that embodies the commitment that these two women have for the special children community. It is worth noting that neither one of the ladies have family members with disabilities, and were exposed to the children due to the nature of their work in the social field and their passion lead to this amazing centre that pours love onto all those who attend it. It is formally under the umbrella of the Volunteer Centre and the two Abeers manage the day-to-day activities that take place.

What was the idea and initiative behind The Abeer 2 Centre?

We started off 16 years ago, helping special needs children who were mainly autistic or had communication difficulties of different ages and genders. We used to wonder where these children spend their time in the summer, especially when some had behavioral problems and cannot travel easily. So, we decided to cater for that by starting a summer program where we would care for these children from 8 am till 2pm. These are generally the peak hours of their most active phases, which tend to be stressful for their parents and guardians. In effect, we were there to aid with psychological and emotional stress so he/she can enjoy the summer.

Being specialists in the field, we were able to tailor activities that suite their conditions. Activities included swimming, horse riding, behavioral therapy, and outings. We had experience with dealing with Autistic children, which is the third most difficult intellectual

disability to manage. It was a big challenge but we loved it and felt attached to the children, especially having been recent graduates with fresh energy and will. We did this for a year, but when we finished, we received phone calls from parents asking us to continue, that they would provide the support and even pay for specialists to join. Having so many people wanting to take part, we were able to put together a team, take on 15 children and design a morning and afternoon program. All though it was exhausting, we enjoyed it every minute of it and continued smiling until the end of the working day. It was because this was our dream.

When more children wanted to join, we faced a few challenges, particularly with the more serious conditions. Consequently, we recruited professionals and took advantage of their expertise. The capacity was limited, so, we went on seeking a legal umbrella and luckily, The Volunteer Centre took us under their wing and within a week of applying, we received an approval letter and a response that Shaika Amthal Al Ahmed Al Sabah was impressed with our efforts. She then met with us and checked that our objectives were to benefit society and that there were no personal gains. We have been with them since 1999 and we hope to remain with them for a very long time.

What is the story behind the name and logo?

Abeer 2 chose us! It was coincidental that we shared the same name; it became a family name so we used it.

What inspired the initiative?

It started with a boy who Abeer and I were supervising during a swimming session. I saw her drifting away and I also began thinking about how he would spend his summer due

to the personal situation with his parents (that we both were aware of). Then Abeer asked me, “Why don’t we do something for this boy this summer?”

I replied, “I was just thinking the same thing.” We felt our hearts were in sync in wanting to help this boy. He was the inspiration behind starting a summer club for the purpose of caring for special needs children like him.

Did you have any obstacles in achieving your goal?

At the beginning we had a lot of drive and energy and we did not pay attention or foresee any obstacles. We did not think of legal status or bookkeeping for accounts and budgeting. We did not think of the organizational structure. Our work started simple and we had no idea how far it would grow. We were very excited and our love for the children was very positive. It was not until later that we were faced with obstacles when the number of children grew. People began to follow us looking for support, while we needed support of our own! Our media exposure was not huge as we had a specific number of children to support. As we expanded, we sought legal presence and registered our name, but we still had a problem with volunteers who were inconsistent. We had to reach out to the media to promote volunteering and increase our presence. We contacted Loyac and other institutions to volunteer. We also had financial challenges, as the events, trips, and equipment were costly.

What distinguished you for success?

What made us successful were our parents’ prayer and our genuine compassion for the children, which made us gain their parents’ trust to the extent that they would say that they trust us more than the schools or even their

Page 22: Issue 54 - September 2013

20 THETALK / September / 2013

homes. We are giving them an educational and entertaining program and a safe arrival home, having gotten special care and one-on-one attentive shadowing program. So, thankfully, we gained a true and trusting reputation. The parents would say that, “You offer to the children what could not be offered by the parents. We don’t know how to reward you.” We have maintained very good relationship with the parents ever since.

What skills have you found most useful for your work?

We consistently receive training and we are constantly learning and seeking to improve our skills. This continual education and constant attendance of specialist training, workshops, lectures, local and international conferences, have developed our skills. When we are faced with a query, we would do our own research as well as contact specialists. This experience has encouraged me to continue my education and earn a Master’s Degree and soon a PhD in London. It inspired me to challenge myself, improve my skills, and educate myself and others to be impacted and impacting in the field of special education. The world of Autism is vast and very complex. If we work together, we can complete the puzzle, but when some of us quit then we let the team down, then, who will support this child? The burden will then be on the parents and siblings alone and it can be very straining at times. When we help them, they can help us and we all support that child, our community and our country.

On a bad day, what would you say to

yourself for motivation and to keep on going?

What keeps me going and stops me from entering a dark circle, is involving others in what I do. I am not the only one responsible for Abeer 2, my colleagues play a role as well and they share responsibility, even the volunteers and teachers. Together, we fight bad days and we do it often by breaking the routine. For example, we have entertainment days and some dinner outings for the volunteers. Abeer and I shift work so that the stress does not get to us. When you make a team effort and are able to delegate tasks, you can avoid bad days.

Do you believe that all dreams come true?

All dreams come true. Nothing is impossible. The word does not even exist in my dictionary.

What do you think of volunteer work?

It is my family, I have four children; two boys and two girls, and I say volunteer work is my fifth child and I involve my family in it. I even incentivize my children to participate. My husband tells me that he could ban me from going if it weren’t for the fact that he feels that my work brings our family blessings, and wants to be supportive and a part of it. So, I consider it a family member and it is with me always.

What advice would you give people wanting to start their own initiative?

I say, take one firm step after the other, and

you will progress, go up many steps and you will build a future for yourself and others. Don’t deprive yourself of this experience. You could leave a special mark where no one else did. Try to not be afraid, try to not be shy. Challenge yourself. So, I recommend that they try.

Last word or wish?

I wish for peace in the Arab world and to keep Kuwait away from any discrimination. If we focus on charity work and going back to our roots of working together, then everything can be beautiful. We can go back to this, and more, through volunteer work, compassion and love. We want the Kuwaiti who loves his neighbors and neighborhood. If we can encourage this, we will be like we were before, and more. I wish for the value of volunteer work to be taught at schools, and for students to have field visits to elderly halls and orphanages so they are able to feel for someone else. We must raise our children to love volunteer work and in this way we would succeed.

This article was written by Fatemah Almosawi founder of Spread the Passion, a not for profit organization with the main aim of spreading awareness about the value of volunteer work under the slogan “Make giving part of your living” by connecting volunteers to volunteering opportunities. rAwiA Al-mutAwAIt has been over a year since rawia has found great success through her jewelry line Chaos. Our Editor-in-Chief, Nouf Al-Hajri, jumped for joy when she received her own personalized necklace from Chaos for her birthday. We all loved the necklace and soon after we became fans! We had the great pleasure of meeting the talent behind the brand and finding out more of how it all came together.

What made you start your own jewelry line?

I sketch all the time, mostly abstract designs. I loved one sketch so much I decided to take it to a work shop create a bracelet out of it. It turned out to be beautiful so I decided to make more. I had no place to display them so I decided to showcase them using Instagram as a start, it has been very successful since then so I have chosen to stick with that as my main gateway to customers. I also showcase them in Bliss Boutique in Burj Jassim and I have also showcased them at exhibitions.

Besides the ready collections, you also do personalization, is this through Instagram as well?

Customers can email me, which is on my Instagram account or they can put the orders through the boutique as well. noufilosophy was actually the first piece of customized jewelry I made. I was requested to make it for her birthday, after that personalization became something I continually offer.

Why the name Chaos?

I called it Chaos because it is very different. I work really well under pressure. It represents me and the way I think. My mind is very chaotic. The logo also represents something dramatic and different which is my method of working. I wanted it to be a name that I would want for a brand I can expand on as much as necessary. I don’t like to design anything close to what I have seen before.

Did you face any difficulties when starting your brand?

There are always ups and downs in terms of the market. That is probably the most difficult aspect. You can predict it to an extent. Otherwise it wasn’t so difficult since I took my time and work through inspiration and passion rather than focusing on just the outcome.

Page 26: Issue 54 - September 2013

Do you have deadlines for new pieces?

I create new pieces of jewelry whenever I get inspired. I don’t have a time frame. I get inspired and sketch it the same day or I sleep on it and work on it the next day. Once it is done I take it to the work.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everything from every day! I also have a wild imagination which helps a lot. I love to feed my mind with images, art and designs. For example, the design of my favourite gold cuff came from an old Turkish rug.

Besides sketching, what other hobbies do you enjoy?

We paint a lot at home, mainly abstract. I love colours and abstract art, anything dreamy and lucid. I love reading; anything about philosophy. I also love reading magazines including ones focused on design. I enjoy the beach for swimming and all kinds of water sports, I am very active. I also enjoy travelling, specifically to Beirut, my favourite city. And of course, every girl loves to shop!

Are there any stores in specific?

I love to shop everywhere; thrift stores, flea markets to high streets and high end boutiques. If I had to choose though, it would be Adolfo Domínguez and reiss.

You mentioned you love colours, will you be including more colours in your pieces?

I’m slowly incorporating colour into my jewelry. This brand has given me a great way to express my artistic views so I would love to expand on this and see where it takes me!

You can find Chaos at Bliss Boutique in Burj Jassem.

AuTuMN/WINTEr 2013 WOMEN MAINLINE

Packed with rich texture and vibrant colour combinations, Paul Smith’s autumn/winter 2013women’s collection offers a contemporary twist on sartorial classics. The collection mixes hard and soft textures, contrasting soft alpaca tweeds and lambskin with silk twill and layered organza. Dark, wintry shades collide with optimistic brights and a softened silhouette with harsh lines; relaxed shoulders contrast with tailored trousers and sharply cut collars and sleeves in outerwear.Geometric prints are subtly incorporated into fabrics, bonded onto felted wool and crisp cotton,

and inject a signature Paul Smith twist into linings and soft accessories. Bespoke interpretations of houndstooth and Prince of Wales checks appear throughout. A photograph taken by Paul in Cuba of an ornate chandelier appears in several looks, including a pair of red straight-leg trousers and a teal silk shift.

An autumnal palette is punctuated with bright pops of colour, including fuchsia, cobalt, teal andrust, balanced by neutral navy, off-white and silver. Combinations vary – red and pink clash, while complementary shades of blue graduate. Vivid accessories mix and match with bold separates, either complementing rich hues or clashing with bright tailoring. The oversized portfolio clutch is a key accessory, available in an array of colours, as is the ‘Ziggy’ bag. The ‘Base’ holdall is reinvented this season in ‘Point’ fabric, designed by Paul in collaboration with textile designers Maharam.

We were first introduced to Olivia on the MTV show The City. She was portrayed as Whitney Port’s rival but the attention quickly became solely focused on her incredible style. Olivia has been in the fashionable New York socialite circle long before the show hit the air. Having grown up in the Upper East Side of New York, she has developed the priority of keeping up appearances. A high sense of art is inherited from her mother Lynn Hutchings and her famous real estate father, Douglas Palermo. Always dressed to perfection, she has never been photographed looking less than perfect!

After the series, Olivia went on to become part of Wilhelmina Models. She appeared on the cover of Elle Mexico, Tatler, ASOS Magazine, Shop Till You Drop and Marie Claire uK. She also modeled alongside her gorgeous boyfriend, Johannes Huebl, for autumn/winter 2010 campaigns by Mango and Hogan. In 2010, She also launched a jewelry line with roberta Freymann . With such strong background on art and fashion, Olivia Palermo Website/Blog successfully engulfed the aspects of luxurious fashion. One cannot simply access the website and not be fashionably inspired.

Banking on people’s need to see what she is wearing at every occasion, she began her own website that includes everything you need from fashion apparels, accessories, home furniture, to favorite boutiques. Tips on “How to rock,” wearing ruffles or best accessories are guides to anyone who needs to change their wardrobe or be constantly updated. regardless of the effective fashion tips, new trends and cosmetic news, what makes the website different from any other is the fact that it encompasses fashion from a life style perspective. Basically, any aspect regarding fashion will be exemplified through a real life situation encountered by her, such as fashion for work, outings, and/or special occasions. Even when Palermo provides her best gateway places for vacation, she lets you know what is important to pack in your suitcase that is still on trend. She will even point out which

suite case to buy! Another reason that adds to the significance of the website is that all events attended by Palermo are not revolved around her. The article is less personal towards her and becomes more personal to the reader because she is sharing what the reader would want to

know like mentioning how and where they can match her outfit or the best swimsuits for her vacation. Exciting isn’t it?

This refined jewellery watch draws on Salvatore Ferragamo’s research of and experimentation with different materials. The specific reference in this case is the invention of marine leather, which is tanned and prepared using special techniques. Salvatore Ferragamo used marine leather for several of his creations in the nineteen twenties and thirties, returning to the material in the fifties for the shoes he designed for Queen Ingrid of Denmark.

Evocatively named “Sirena”, this unusual material is celebrated today with precious dials in white or grey mother of pearl, featuring an unusual inlay technique that gives them the appearance of fish scales.

The five models available, with steel or IP rose gold cases and Swiss made quartz movements, are fitted with a black or nacré white alligator effect leather strap, or a single or bi-colour steel bracelet. The highpoint of the collection is the model with diamond pavé dial and a mauve strap reflecting the mother of pearl highlights.

Home Remedy Tips by celebRiTy HaiRsTylisT, asgaR!From supermodel Cindy Crawford to Bollywood supremo and one of the world’s most beautiful women Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the name Asgar is synonymous with cutting edge and attention grabbing hairstyles. The UK based hair maestro has worked his magic on scores of celebrities and dignitaries the world over, making the front covers of several leading fashion magazines and item publications with his show-stopping and inspirational coiffures.

Home Remedy Tips for maintaining healthy hair by celebrity hairstylist, Asgar:

1. Olive OilTry applying a small amount of olive oil to the lengths and ends of the hair to provide moisture to hair which is regularly exposed to the heat and sun. Avoid the scalp as humidity causes the scalp to get naturally oily anyway. Do this weekly too if you have dryer, coarser hair.

2. HoneyHoney is a kitchen cupboard staple and a natural ingredient which is often found in shop bought hair-care solutions. The natural moisturizing properties of honey draw in the moisture and will instantly seal into the dry hair that the sun and heat causes. Try soothing small amounts of honey to the ends of your hair and leave it for an hour or so before rinsing it off thoroughly. Not only will it provide a pleasant fragrance but it will improve the moisture and shine.

3. EggAlthough it sounds odd, washing your hair with egg yolks, one or twice a week can provide a pure source of protein and fat to frazzled summer hair. The protein and fat can effectively minimize the effect that the sun, Sea, Chlorine and humidity have on causing limp, dry locks. Make sure your hair is damp when you do this and carefully rub one egg yolk into the scalp. Leave this for approximately 20 minutes and then rinse it out thoroughly for that extra strong hair boost.

4. Eat Right It may seem like the most simple of home remedies but it really can be the most effective. What one eats is a huge factor in the state of one’s hair condition. During the summer months where you have adverse weather conditions against you, make sure to load up on protein filled foods such as fish, nuts, spinach and Greek-yogurt containing all the right nutrients to keep your hair looking thick and healthy. Not only will your hair reap the rewards, but your waistline might also.

“A DAY WITHOUT MEETING SOMEONE NEW IS A DAY WASTED.”

As the month of September has a special fashion aura, let us explore the integral parts that influence it. Art and fashion are sometimes used interchangeably. For example, Nicholas Kirkwood came up with a 12 model one-off couture line of shoes inspired in pop artist Keith Haring‘s work. An artistic person who was able to combine both art and fashion was the artist from the City of Passion, Miami, Alexander Mirjais. Born with a creative gene, Mirjais embarked on his artistic journey only through doodling in graffiti. Travelling to big cities and countries added significance to his artistic piece. With exposure from culture of different countries, his art pieces were influenced by several cultures. Especially his Cuban and Spanish roots that made his artwork unique, colorful and has a historic aura. Amalgamating all these factors together your eyes will be bestowed with a beautiful piece filled with emotions. This will definitely attract attention and engage anyone!

A strong and precise image. Clean and essential styling that portrays a virile man, defined by outerwear with a broad silhouette and trousers with a clean cut.

Surfaces are opaque and warm, and underline the preciousness of the collection. research into craftsmanship is key, and is evident in the fabric treatments and tailoring of the pieces. It is this quality of craftsmanship that brings together the apparently contrasting aesthetics of sport swear and classic menswear.

Thus, neoprene envelops precious material s such as velvet and suede – a contemporary combination that makes one re-think definitions of techno and sartorial.

Sportswear enters a new phase without

renouncing to high-performance technical fabrics and treatments; luxury is expressed through the focus on precious fabrics and the practicality of the clothing.

Leather is treated using traditional methods practiced at great Italian tannerie s where hand dyeing is done with sponges and brushes.

The refined knitwear is lightweight. There are complex pieces created by the interweaving of cashmere and mohair in a sensual geometrical game of colours.

The colour palette is drawn from the established Armani code, and is composed of tried and trusted hues, such as warm greys and shades of brown (including cocoa and colours referencing precious woods), which fuse with intense tones

such as wenge, before passing to absolute black.

ruby red is a key colour for this season. Aristocratic and precious, it runs through the collection following an elegant narrative path, standing out in the male wardrobe and reaching the pinnacle of an original, rich and magical chromatic pyramid.

Acclaimed recent accomplishments such as the gyrotourbillon i, the Master Minute repeater and the reverso grande complication a triptyque – the world’s most complicated wristwatch – have borne eloquent testimony to the technical inventiveness of Jaeger- LeCoultre, setting the seal on its extraordinary renown within the highly selective field of Haute Horlogerie complications. this year, the Manufacture maintains this intensive pace of innovations with the unveiling of a new collection, the duometre, and the presentation of the first model in the line, the Duometre a Chronographe. The latter’s distinctive styling and unprecedented technical features clearly place it in the most exclusive echelons of watchmaking fine art.

this genuine micromechanical revolution houses a new-generation Calibre 380, nicknamed “dual-Wing”. two independent mechanisms respectively serve to drive the time display and an additional function, while a single shared regulating organ ensures chronometer-worthy operating precision without having to renounce the use of a complication. As the first representative of the new lineage, Calibre 380 is the first chronograph mechanism with no coupling-clutch, offering peerless time-measurement precision and read-off to the nearest one-sixth of a second. Housing this movement and endowed with a new case featuring welded lugs and a finely grained dial, the Duometre offers a superlative reinterpretation of a great watchmaking classic.

trAining tO tHe tOpDouglas Leandro

After your body’s process through Ramadan, what better way than to go straight into a regime of perfecting your health? We looked to our favourite trainer Douglas Leandro to better understand what the best way to achieve our optimum potential is!

Douglas is a strength and conditioning trainer at Al Corniche Club. His passion for fitness and boyish charm makes him a delight to train with. Making you laugh just when you are about to give up is a trait we admire and which is rare to pull off. Not only does he have a positive way of making you push harder, he designs a program to suit you and your lifestyle. It is a holistic approach to fitness, making it much easier to implement, especially knowing that you are bettering yourself in all aspects of health.

Page 60: Issue 54 - September 2013

How did you get into the fitness industry?

From 12-17 I was in 2 big football clubs in Sao Poalo, Brazil. Palmeiras and Corinthians Paulista.

I used to be a professional football player like my father always wanted me to be. I had a lot of training. But when I was 17 I had to stop for six months when I began having trouble with my joints.

I was so frustrated. I couldn’t continue but I couldn’t just stop. I went to university for Physical Education and was training people at their homes. So by the second year of university I was a personal trainer, teaching football and volleyball for children. In the last year of university I was working with kids from 3-7 years on their psychomotricity to develop their skills while they are young. So we work on giving them better speed, better power, and better movement from a young age. Then I went on to work at a big chain of gyms called Bio ritmo. While working there I was writing for magazines in Brazil. Our gym was full of

celebrities that lived in Brazil. Many of them were football players. I was there till I received an offer to move to Kuwait and work here.

What made you take the decision to move here?

I was the youngest trainer at Bio ritmo, so I was reaching things very fast which put me on the fast track to getting doors open which made me feel bored. I was planning an international experience. So the challenge of moving to Kuwait having to learn English fast, it all made sense and I took the step.

What made you start your blog?

I decided to start my blog to offer all the information I know in a way beginners would understand and be able to apply. One of the reasons why I love being in Kuwait is that my job is needed. There are many people that are not aware of their habits. The general population will have no clue if they just jump right into the information for fitness and health. They will feel

lost. Other fitness experts may explain things in the way they know it but not how others can comprehend it. I don’t like to deliver information in a way that is complex and bore my clients and my readers.

What is the main objective of your blog?

What I am trying to do in Kuwait specifically is to lead people to become healthier and fitter and the best way is through this, I have heard many times that the industry I am in won’t make you filthy rich and that is not the point. The point is the satisfaction I get from making a positive impact on people’s lives through the most essential elements which is our health. When someone drops 5 kilos and is healthier and their self-esteem increases and they are happier, it is so rewarding. That is my goal, which is what pushes me to strive…

There was a mention of a program on your blog, FAST?

Yes, Fast is a program to decrease your body

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 59

fat drastically. It is a 45 min workout three times a week. It is intense. This is so that you reach your optimum body weight and shape; making your muscles leaner.

The only way to burn your body fat healthily is to increase muscle and work on it being lean and that is what keeps you burning fat throughout the day.

You are a BioSignature practitioner; can you tell us more about it?

BioSignature training begins with an evaluation of your hormones and fat composition. We work with your hormonal profile to figure out, based on your hormones, why you are not losing weight in general and also in specific areas. We can be very specific! If your genetics help and you are committed, and by committed I mean with your time at the gym, the time you go to bed and with your eating habits.

I do not believe you have to be a full on body

60 THETALK / September / 2013

builder with all those muscles. It is not practical. unless that is your profession, there is no need for it. If you have a normal job you need to focus on your optimum health for your functionality.

I don’t believe in shortcuts, there are always side-effects. It is not worth it.

Your wife is also a trainer at Al Corniche Club, how did you both meet?

I met my wife while working at Flex. I was training the trainers using a programme I was training in Sao Paolo and when I was training the female trainers I met her.

What tattoos do you have?

My three year old son’s name written in Arabic and the other one is the armor that was worn by two different tribes in Brazil. They are the two tribes in Brazil that never gave up. They wore it as protection!

What do you enjoy doing other than training?

Back home in Brazil I would go to the coast to surf. Here I enjoy going to the movies, reading, playing Playstation 3 *he smirks* I enjoy fashion in general and of course travelling.

Do you have a specific place you like to travel to?

I love Asia, I wish to go to Malaysia; at the beach, clear sea, with my coconut water, I’d be happy. I am now preparing for a trip to do a course in strength and conditioning. I am very excited.

Do you go often to courses?

Yes I do! There aren’t many courses happening in the middle-east so we try to pick the best from around the globe so that we can set our schedules and attend them. There are about two or three training courses a year we attend. Then there are seminars which may be up to four times a year. You have to keep up to date. We learn new techniques and updated research.

Since the interview, we had our BioSignature analysis done, which was very eye opening to the little mistakes that we make that have a negative effect on our bodies. From the start of

putting Douglas’s recommendations into action we have noticed a great difference in our figures and overall health. We can excitedly say we have found a better perspective on fitness and a much more positive lifestyle with this program. Making the changes with Douglas’s guidance and training truly is a recipe for the most optimum version of you!

Burberry is launching its first ever in house fragrance for men called Burberry Brit rhythm.

Burberry Brit rhythm was developed in collaboration with perfumers Dominique ropion, Anne Flipo and Olivier Polge.

The notes include basil, verbena, cardamom, juniper berries, black leather, patchouli, styrax, cedar, incense and tonka bean.

According to Burberry’s chief creative officer Christopher Bailey, the scent is “inspired by the music in the brand’s DnA” and aimed at rock ’n’ roll souls.

Describing the scent, he said:This is the first scent with a certain edge. “We don’t have anything with this kind of attitude. They are either a little more classic or traditional or they don’t have this kind of sexiness or attitude.”

He described the launch of the fragrance as “the biggest ever men’s launch” for the brand.

Burberry Brit rhythm will be supported by a black-and-white print and film digitally led campaign that will be unveiled online on 3 September. A capsule collection, heavy on leather jackets and denim, will be sold to complement the fragrance.

EDITOR’S LETTER

meDitAting This month we are focusing on meditation. We all go through a restless time after coming back from our vacations. We not only suffer from jet-lag but also need to ease ourselves back to routine and back to the atmosphere around us. The best way to do this apart from exercise, good food, plenty of water and sleep, is to reenergize our minds. Most people avoid meditating because they cannot shake the millions of thoughts that pass through their minds whilst trying to keep it clear and calm. However, that is alright! Follow the steps, when practiced on a daily basis meditating will become much easier and if continued for over twenty-one days, it will become a habit and an essential part of your day.

HEALTH

The benefits:• New perspective on stressful situations• Increased self-awareness• Increased focus on the present• reduction of negative emotions• Better sleep• Improved memory• Increased positivity

The Steps:• Choose a time of day when you need to remove yourself from your

surroundings and allow yourself at least five minutes and work your way up to half an hour or more if you like

• Find a quiet and peaceful place• Sit on the floor with your legs crossed and your hands on your knees,

palms faced up. (if you have trouble you can lay down on your back with you arms at your sides, although sitting in the mentioned position is preferable)

• Keeping your back straight, relax all your muscles including the muscles on your face

• Focus all your attention on your breathing. Listen to it and follow it neither with judgment nor with the attempt of altering it. Allow yourself to

breathe naturally and you will find yourself breathing deeper and better• If thoughts and images are in your mind just let them pass through

without giving them focus• You may count your breaths 1-10 and start over or recite a single

word such as “om” and focus on the action of reciting it steadily and repeatedly to help clear your mind

• Once your focus has been set on one thing you can then begin to let go until essentially your mind is completely clear and continue to hold that state for as long as possible

• End with a deep breath and you will be ready to continue your day better!

As simple as it is, the impact of meditating is absolutely grand, especially when practiced daily. You can even spend more time and when your mind is clear you can imagine yourself in your own sanctuary and enjoy your escape in the atmosphere you choose to picture. As it is with everything, practice makes perfect!

Jaeger-LeCoultre has decided to offer an authentic, original souvenir – a unique product from the vallée de Joux – to each of its visitors. From now on, in addition to discovering the world of Swiss Fine Watchmaking, every visitor to the Manufacture will have the opportunity of tasting “Honey from the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre”.

The Grande Maison has decided to start its own production. Concerned about producing thebest quality honey possible and with respecting biodiversity, Jaeger-LeCoultre called uponFranck Crozet, a professional bee keeper in the region, to install and take care of the ten hivesset up in front of the Manufacture. The aim of this initiative is to make visitors from all over the world, as well as the 1,200employees, aware of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s commitment to preserving the environment.

True to its historic roots located in an exceptional place between lake and forests in the vallée de Joux, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains particularly concerned by and involved in the integration of its Manufacture within its natural environment. Since July, observant visitors can spot ten hives newly installed in front of the entrance of the Grand Watchmaking House, or Grande Maison as it is known in French.

Bees play a key role in nature – by transporting pollen from flowers that they visit, they contribute to the reproduction of plant species. Today, they are a threatened species and this is a good opportunity for the Manufacture to give them a helping hand.

For almost 180 years, the brand has watched over the environmental impact of its activities.Together with its employees and side by side with various personalities, it gets involved in many local and international activities. The Making Time more Beautiful project remains true to the moral heritage bequeathed by the founder of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre, Antoine LeCoultre, conscious of the necessity

for an adequate framework and infrastructures to ensure healthy growth for the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre.

In 2009, with the extension of the Manufacture, a new dimension was given to this project.Other basic initiatives were set up or improved, such as recycling and use of certified paper – aswell as the creation of a bus transport system for employees, awarded the State of vaud’s Prixde la Mobilité (Mobility Prize) in 2008.On the international front, Jaeger-LeCoultre is a uNESCO partner and, in collaboration withthe World Heritage Centre, has created the “Tides of Time” programme, dedicated to thepreservation of endangered marine sites.

It seems that anyone who has visited Oaxaca in Mexico will tell you that the best part of their holiday was the Oaxacans themselves!! Although their driving may not be the best, the ‘mi casa es tu casa’ mentality is shared throughout the city. We can assure you that it is not rare for locals to offer to go above and beyond the call of duty to help their neighbours or tourists. Mexico is tagged as one of the most dangerous countries in the world, and in certain areas that may be true to an extent, but it is certainly not true in Oaxaca. As a tourist, it is always important to keep your wits about you, but for the most part, you can relax as the locals tend to be very good natured. The city is very tranquil, despite the occasional protests and the evening doughnut vendors announcing their products for all to hear.

For a short trip to Oaxaca, the prime attractions include Monte Alban, El Zocalo, the Ethnobo-tanical garden, the Tule tree, the artisan markets and pedestrian roads. For those interested in architecture or history, Monte Alban might be the first place you would want to visit after settling into your hotel. There are three chief architectur-al influences including the 484 year old Spanish

city centre and the Culipan Village. The third, Monte Alban, is the best preserved example of pre-Hispanic architecture, influenced both by the Mayans and the Aztecs. Bring a bottle of water, sunscreen and a strong pair of legs because you will need to dedicate a couple of hours and some walking (particularly up the stairs) to these majestic ruins.

El Zocalo is the public square surrounding an 18th century cathedral that is both aesthetically pleasing on the outside as well as the inside. Be sure to spend your Friday evenings at the main square as the locals devote this day to culture as musical and dance groups show up to entertain and celebrate. Explore the markets and artisan shops; I assure you that you will be impressed by the quality as well as the low prices there.

The impressive man-made sites are matched by the natural delicacy. The Ethnobotanical garden hosts tours on most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings and some afternoons, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly if you want to see one of the largest collection of cacti and nat-ural scenery. If you dig the wonders of Mother

Page 74: Issue 54 - September 2013

Nature, then be sure to visit the Tule tree, as it has the largest trunk in the world!

Finally, keep in mind that aside from the ruins, museums and gardens, it is just as meaningful to experience the colourful houses on the pe-destrian roads, the diverse menus in restaurants and the welcoming interaction with the locals. We dare anyone who visits to try the Chapulines (crickets). You will not be disappointed!

The Meat Co. restaurant has held its high reputation of quality and delicious food for many years. We revisited the restaurant to learn more about the history and the work behind the successful chain and we must say, we were delighted to know just how much thought and planning is put in serving every dish to their customers.

The African restaurant boasts an incredible space on the first floor in 360 Mall, overlooking “The Gardens” zone. The interior resonates an amazingly rich and calm

atmosphere. The staff are incredibly attentive and charming. They have full knowledge of everything within the menu, with pride, since most of the staff are originally from Johannesburg, Africa. This adds to the authenticity, which is also heavily apparent in the vibe of the restaurant and in the dishes.

Known for their succulent and always cooked to perfection meat, The Meat Co. has so much more to offer than the mouth-watering steaks, burgers and lamb shanks. They have an array of salads; we fell in love with their Citrus Salad, and chicken and seafood dishes.

As for the desserts, each one is an absolute gem. From the Apple Crumble to the Tiramisu, they all have the astonishing richness as every dish does on the menu. Luckily, there are dessert platters with an assortment of mini versions of the desserts available. However, we advise you order the Traditional South African Malva pudding additionally and prepare to taste your new favourite dessert. Describing it would not do it justice!

A very exciting treat is when there is a birthday and you get to witness the performance of

singing “Happy Birthday” in Zulu and beating on the drums. We couldn’t help but request an ongoing performance as we ate!

Great for intimate dining, a family feast and celebrations; The Meat Co. is perfect for any occasion at prices that are very well worth the

top quality flavours and experience. It truly is a complete dining experience!

MAnSOn BY JEFF GuInn

More than forty years ago Charles Manson and his mostly female commune killed nine people, among them the pregnant actress Sharon Tate. It was the culmination of a criminal career that author Jeff Guinn traces back to Manson’s childhood. Guinn interviewed Manson’s sister and cousin, neither of whom had ever previously cooperated with an author. Childhood friends, cellmates, and even some members of the Manson Family have provided new information about Manson’s life. Guinn has made discoveries about the night of the Tate murders, answering unresolved questions, such as why one person on the property where the murders occurred was spared.

A relationship, long overdue to be repaired, is being given special focus now. You probably thought that what happened would always remain left well and truly in the past and even if you had the chance previously to improve the situation, you’d have refused the opportunity to do so.

It takes all sorts to make the world go round and you would be able to understand the same in this month ahead. That being said does little to help someone growing increasingly impatient with the behaviour or attitudes of certain people but the sky is trying to help you show patience or willingness to adapt to someone you find difficult to be patient or adapt toward.

95Brought to you by

Your daily life during this month shall take a beating. Almost everything you try shall meet with hindrances and impediments. In some ways, the cosmos is demanding you appease it before it can grant you access to something you truly desire.

Are you through choosing to respond in a certain way, doing what only suits you? You need to take the thoughts or feelings of your near ones into consideration...

Aquarians are wise people and you are not an exception. You possess uncanny abilities to predict outcomes to events that the rest of us tend to believe must be left to unfold in their own way and time. You are seeing something now that others fail to see.

Some people love being fussy and you are one, Pisces. You take pride in yourself on not pursuing anything until every eventuality has been considered. You are more spontaneous than that and this is where you and a certain person are failing to see eye to eye now.

Even the most adventurous person enjoys some level of predictability in their lives but not you Gemini. As much as you enjoy adrenaline surges play it safe during this month. You could gain something significant by doing so now.

There’s a certain person you need to make more of an effort to understand for this month, Cancer. The attitudes and opinions of people around you have changed recently and you could be struggling to keep up with their constantly-changing ideas.

Grass may be greener on the other side of a fence but don’t underestimate how much time and effort may have been required on the part of the gardener to make it so, Scorpio. You appear to be of the opinion that your current situation is less attractive than one you know exists elsewhere.

Much can happen in the month ahead as far as Arians are concerned. There would be certain expectations about what the coming days will bring and surprises occur that can transform your life all of a sudden.

The sky speaks of exclusion in some way and to say you’re unhappy or at least frustrated with this might be a bit of an understatement. You appear to have little in the way of choice in terms of participation or involvement with a situation.

There is much you can do now to win someone over or touch the heart of an individual. They don’t want you to go to too much trouble. To bring about increased closeness between you and someone else, all you need to do is show genuine understanding towards them.
