    Happy New Year!

As you read this edition of the Northern Lion, I hope you are feeling bright and energised – ready for the new 2021 year. Some of us will have stayed up beyond midnight not just to celebrate the New Year dawning but also to make sure 2020 left! I’m sure we are looking forward to a much brighter year ahead.

Later this month the District Governors would normally travel to Sydney for the Multiple District Council meeting. We have been asked to hold off cancelling our accommodation etc however, with the greater Sydney area declared a hotspot it is looking very unlikely that most of us will be there in person. It is more likely that we will again meet for our committee meetings and main Council meeting via Zoom. The same is likely for our incoming Cabinet Secretaries and District Governor Elects who should be attending their training.

Hello to all Lions, Lionesses, Leos and families

Stay tuned for some more information in regard to our district activities for March – membership month. Most of our clubs have identified the need to recruit more members. Not only is recruitment important, we need to treat our potential and new members like gold as we should our longer term members. Equally important is how we retain, engage and motivate our members. In this edition of the Northern Lion, I have added some retention tips as shared by our current Multiple District Global Leadership Coordinator Past Council Chair Phillip Johnson. As the document says retention is not rocket science but a reminder is always good.

A quick reminder also for those who want to attend the institutes that Jo Lynes has circulated, to please get your applications in so we can sign and meet the deadline.

For those of us on Facebook, you may see some of the positivity statements that float by from time to time. Certainly, if I search for volunteer quotes on the internet there are many to choose from. Some are designed to encourage people to join us, others should give us the heart to continue and feel proud about what we do.

We should all feel proud of our Lions organisation – locally, nationally and internationally. Together we achieve so much.

With positive vibes to start 2020, we had goals, positivity and ideas a’plenty.

The floods had subsided and fires put out, we hoped we had seen

    the last of the drought.

Things looked fine, no cyclones this year, so plans were made without any fear.

But along came COVID, and sent us all home, no travel or meetings,

    no more could we roam.

We learned to skype, GoTo and Zoom, from home office or converted dining room.

We oldies changed from dinosaurs to tech—iPhones, texts, laptops…

    what the heck!

Sanitiser, social distance and soap, a new way of living and learning to cope.

Socials, weddings and funeral restrictions, lost businesses, jobs

    and dire predictions.

The Government rescued with packages of ‘dough’ to help relieve stress, finances and woe.

Our borders were closed and planes stood still, masks and testing stations,

    but many fell ill.

Q2 Lions did well, to ward off the scare, but don’t be complacent and still be aware.

Our meetings resumed but with a different look—no buffets, handshaking

    and sign in the book.

Convention was limited but did so much, included on-line to keep us in touch.

No raising of funds means the coffers are bare—sausage sizzles are different

    and events are rare.

Still, we care for each other in the usual way and hope the world recovers soon one day.

We’ll make the most of Christmas spreading good cheer, pray for rain without cyclones

    to start the new year.

The world has changed—think outside the square to keep Lions serving because we care.

Pillars of Service- the needs in community, Lions will help

    as ‘we serve’ in unity.

2020 Vision in Service, United in Kindness and Diversity

Will help us help each other through any adversity.

Take Care, stay well and safe over the Festive Season and look forward to reconnecting in 2021.

    Cabinet Secretary’s

    Report

    Hello Lions, Lionesses and Leos,

I can now safely say that my desk can just about be seen after so much paperwork coming across it. I had a reshuffle so I guess nothing will be found but it will leave room for 2021 work sheets.

I hope by now Clubs are commencing the task of sweeping away 2020 in readiness for 2021 a year that will be fantastic for us all!

A reminder to those Clubs who have not yet done their data cleansing on MYLCI. I have received several Clubs’ information, so I ask that those other Clubs commence and return to me that they have completed their task. I thank those Clubs that responded to my email regarding data cleansing.

Just a reminder to Clubs regarding applications to the Facility Training as they need to be in asap. This is a great opportunity for Members to be able to attend to improve their Leadership Skills. I attended one of these trainings and can say ‘go for it’ as it is thoroughly well worth while, as you come away with so much more knowledge of Lions.

Keep on doing your monthly tasks by placing Membership and Activity reporting on MYLCI and MYLION as this is so important and only takes a short while each month, please keep up your good work.

Time is approaching for the Multiple District Convention in Canberra 7 – 10th May 2021. Not sure in what format the Convention will be held but information will be coming through shortly. I will be asking for Remembrance Forms to be completed as well as Delegate Forms so keep your eyes glued for my emails.

It has been exciting to see that several of our Lioness Clubs will be forming their own Lions Clubs, already a couple have already formed. Welcome to Lions as we are so pleased you will still be working with us all. Some Lioness Clubs are moving to be Volunteer Clubs and again thank you for still working side by side with Lions.

Also, some new Clubs have formed. We wish the North Queensland ASD Lions Club Branch all the best and hope they will soon form a Club in their own right.

A reminder ANZI Pacific Forum will be held in Cairns 3rd – 5th September 2021 so a date to mark in your diaries.

Membership is especially important at this time as so many Clubs have had a clean out and some members have been dropped for many reasons. So, it is time to

commence working on replacing those members. Keep up our numbers in every Club as it is so important. It is refreshing to get new blood into our Clubs as it comes with new ideas or even better ways to run our Clubs. It can be so beneficial to all.

A reminder that monthly the District is running training online sessions. These are interesting and highly informative so please make the time to tune in. It is so much better to have it in your own homes rather than travelling so take the advantage, “IT IS FREE”!

In the meantime, enjoy your Lions new year as well as have a great New Year celebration. Catch you all soon and thank you all for your great works as well as your participation in assisting me as your Cabinet Secretary.

Until next month stay safe and healthy.

In 2005/2006, PDG Bill Duncanson from 201V2 wrote a very thoughtful paper titled “Member Retention, A Case of Routine Maintenance Not Rocket Science”. In this paper he outlines The Ten Commandments for a good retention program and in this edition I would like to share these commandments with you for your consideration and application at Club level.

Meetings – Punctuality and Control. This has proven to be a most powerful tool in keeping interest in meetings, and high percentage attendance. Make sure to warmly welcome all visitors, and before closing the meeting thank them for attending. In the last edition of the Lion I referred members to various support material from LCI that can assist Club leaders with the task of running Club meetings.

Give Lions tasks they will enjoy. One of the features of a Lions Club is the opportunity for us to make use of a very wide range of talents, skills and life experiences that Lions members bring into our organisation. We are wise to make good use of them.

Show members you care. There is no better way to lose a member that to give up trying to keep them in the circle. Follow-ups on absenteeism are vital. Too many Lions in the past have resigned because of a resolve that their club didn’t miss them, so they didn’t need them.

Keep in touch with members. This is really just an extension of the Club Care, and “we miss you”

philosophy. These days we can keep in contact through email and other forms of social media.

Don’t allow an over-kill in fines and jokes. No one wants to be a spoil-sport or kill-joy, but control of the fines session and stories is a vital aspect of member retention and possible recruitment.

Involve all your members. People become Lions because they want to do something for their community. They want to help others, especially people who are disadvantaged, disabled or underprivileged. Whatever members’ background or vocation they have something to offer to the overall success of the Club.

Bond the Club together through good social activities. This is the key to success. It creates opportunities to get to really know people. The better we understand each other, the less chance of conflict. It creates harmony and good will.

Be interested in people and acknowledge achievements. This all starts with good leadership, observant Bulletin Editor and observant Tail Twister and all with a lot of help from the whole club membership. The grape-vine has to work for this to have greatest effect and to make sure no-one is missed.

Give thanks and praise when due. “Thank you,” just two little words that mean so much.

Deal promptly with conflicts. This speaks for itself and can off-set deeper problems later.

Membership Retention A Case of Routine Maintenance—not Rocket Science

From Past Council Chairman Phillip Johnson

    From the Global Action Team

Welcome to 2021 … we are now headed into our last six months of this current Lions year. At the start of the year, I said I wanted to have over 90% of our district clubs reporting on MyLion, well sadly this is not the case.

I still have over half our clubs in Q2 not reporting. Now I listen and I understand the frustration that this program can cause but MyLion is our reporting platform and that is the end of the story.

We need to keep pushing the point. I have found that if I go and sit down with a club officer who has the task of reporting their service, whether this be the club Sec, the club Pres or the Administrator it seems to help. We can offer this service across our entire district. We have people who can help, who are willing to help. You just need to ask, Contact me on [email protected] and we can HELP.

As a Zone Chair, I can tell you we are so proud of our clubs and the projects you complete, the service you contribute to your communities, I know the clubs are proud of their projects so let’s start sharing our stories. Please let’s get these projects out there for the world to

see, let’s share ideas, let’s report.

Our online training will taking a new format with once-a-month training being scheduled for the next 6 months, having said we will be holding speciality courses on different times

    First up is …

Zone Chair Forum on the 21st January from 7.30 - 8.30 pm. Current Zone Chairs and

incoming Zone Chairs to be invited.

    Followed by ...

New Members Orientation on the 4th February from 7.30 - 8.30pm. Please encourage all new members in your club to attend this session.

Our club development days for next year have been changed. They are April 10th for Clubs and their incoming officers and April 11th for Zone Chairs. Please mark these dates in your diaries. More information will be coming. Until next time, cheers and I look forward to seeing you online.

Global Membership Report Greetings Clubs and Membership Officers,

Happy New Year as we bid farewell to 2020 and all the disruptions it brought with it, and we welcome in 2021 and trust this new beginning gives us a much better year. I do wish every member and club much success in 2021 and trust your Service and Fundraising activities and trust your membership goals are achieved.

As predicted, December shows we dropped more members (37) than any other month and this brings our total members lost to 87 members for the year to date. We have added 24 new or returning members this month bringing this total to 117 for the year to date, and this gives the District an overall membership increase of 30 for this Lions Year.

Much of our District’s good fortune is attributed to the new Innisfail Lioness Lions Club and we welcome the 26 new Lions that will continue to do the great work the Lioness Club has done for many years, and to the new

North Queensland ASD Lions Club Branch we welcome the 17 new Lions and we trust they have many active years making a difference in their community.

So far this year we have:

    • 2 new clubs (Innisfail Lioness Lions Club and NQ ASD Lions Club Branch); • 13 clubs that have increased membership and not lost any members along the way;

    • 2 clubs have increased membership by 5 or more members;

    • 22 clubs have the same membership they started with in July 2020;

    • 16 clubs that have fewer members than they started the year with in July 2020; and

    • 3 clubs have dropped 5 or more members. Stay Safe Norm McMullen 201Q2 Global Membership Co-ordinator [email protected]

DG Audrey visits more Q2 clubs

Next it was the turn of Townsville Barrier Reef Lions Club, where we caught up on club activities and community service projects. DG Audrey was proud to present chevrons to Lions Rosalie Zahra (10 years), Kevin Gietzel (30 years) and Greg Jackson (35 years). Many congratulations on your years of service and we look forward to many more from the collective team.

Thank you for a great night, your hospitality and the special gift.

On 8th December we visited two clubs—first the Lions Club of Townsville Business who had some excellent local visitors and presentations of trauma teddies to give as well as a community raffle to draw.

Trauma teddies were given to Brighter Lives (Townsville Hospital Foundation) and Queensland Emergency Rescue.

We also heard about the excellent work being done by Australian School of Entrepreneurship.

DG Audrey also presented President Sam and Secretary Mark with their 10 year service chevrons. Congratulations on your years of service and we look forward to many years assisting your community. Well done everyone and thanks for the hospitality!

Atherton Lions spread the Christmas cheer

After a three month break due to the pandemic, Lions Club of Atherton recommenced their monthly Meat Tray Raffles in August, with each month since then netting a larger sum than the one before!

Each raffle is dedicated to raise funds for a particular community group or appeal, with members of those organisations assisting on the night. This has proved a huge success, with the public response outstanding.

October’s raffle raised $1,000 to assist with the upkeep of Better Together Community Support’s community bus and in November, the public outdid themselves by helping to raise $2,000 for the Mayor’s Community Christmas Appeal!

December is always the busiest time for the club, with the Christmas Raffle one of the club’s main fundraising activities. In previous years, local businesses have generously donated all the vouchers for the prizes, but this year, with the pandemic affecting the economy, club members voted to buy the vouchers as a way of thanking those businesses who had supported them over the years. Incredibly, only five of the 31 took up the offer, the remainder insisting on donating as usual.

The public response was amazing, with a further 1,500 tickets printed and they still ran out! $9,000 was raised, almost $2,000 up on the previous year.

On Christmas Day club members Glyn Ford, Lydie Knight and Sandy Taske once again delivered small gifts to the residents of Carinya Home for Aged and patients at the Atherton Hospital.

Two Atherton Lions mark milestone years of service

After three years with Apex in Burleigh Heads, Claremont and Mount Isa, Don Scheffler moved up to Far North Queensland and joined the Lions Club of Atherton in June 1970.

In the fifty years since, he has held the positions of president, secretary and treasurer, as well as cabinet secretary for 1978-1979 and convention committee member for 2000-2001. He received a James D Richardson award in 1994 and Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2017. In 1998 Don was made a life member of the club.

In spite of still working, Don remains a very active member of the club and in November President Mil Clay was proud to present him with his 50 year medal from the Australian Lions Foundation.

Kevin Ramke joined Lions Club of Murgon in 1975 and two years later transferred to Lions Club of Atherton.

Over 45 years, Kev has served as president three times, plus once each as secretary and treasurer. He was also the chair for Miss Personality in 1982 and Miss Popularity in 1993 and again in 1995.

Kev was the recipient of a James D Richardson award in 2007 and a Bob Coulthard Award in 2017, this last one in recognition of his work with Recycle for Sight.

Kev only recently retired and continues to be involved in all the club’s fundraising activities and projects.

2020 Peace Poster and Essay winners

PEACE ESSAY WINNER Peace and Service go Hand in Hand

By Joshua Wood (Q1 finalist from Brisbane Camp Hill Carindale)

I remember walking hand in hand with my grandfather when I was a little boy. He was a very wise man, his grey hair highlighting his wisdom. His hands felt dry and rough, particularly to a child who uses his fingers to read.

It was many years later when I stood at his funeral that I realised the significance of those dry, rough hands. They were the hands that held mind and guided me when I was young. They were the hands of a young man who went to war, sacrificing his own safety, to preserve freedom in our country. They were the hands of a man who held his dying mate in battle. They were the hands of a man who mowed the lawns of local elderly people. They were the hands of the man that had been awarded medals, yet didn’t wear them, as he felt he did not need recognition for his service. They were the hands of a man who truly understood what service meant.

My grandfather planted a seed in my mind many years ago about the importance of service and its huge contribution to not only peace in our communities, but providing inner peace as well. I often think about the conflicts, wars and fighting in the world and the sadness in many people’s lives. I also often think about how selfless my grandfather was by helping others without wanting anything in return. My grandfather would say to me ‘you don’t have sight, but have insight and that is much more important.’

We can find inspiration from so many who have gone before us. Mother Theresa who served the poor in India. William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, who dedicated his life to helping the poor. The most inspiring for me personally is Helen Keller, who herself was blind and deaf, yet lived a life of service. Despite her disabilities, she helped veterans blinded in World War 1, founded charities, advocated for the blind and poor and led the American Foundation for the Blind for over forty years. All these incredible people served others and by doing so brought peace to the poor, wounded and hungry. A quote by Albert Schweitzer resonates with

me, ‘the only really happy people are those who have learned how to serve.’

I have made a promise to my grandfather that I will spread the word about serving others and how it not only promotes peace for others but also provides an inner peace that so many people are striving for. I can serve others despite my disability. I do not want to be self-focused, but focused on others. I hope to inspire others to achieve peace through service. In the words of Mother Theresa, ‘the fruit of service is peace.’ I want to plant seeds of peace in my life and encourage others to do so also. Peace and service go hand in hand, just like my grandfather and I walking along many years ago.

The Art Collector ... A New York attorney representing a wealthy art

collector called and asked to speak to his client.

“Jim, I have some good news and I have some bad news.”

The art collector replied, “You know, I’ve had an awful day, Jack, so let’s hear the good news first.”

The lawyer said, “Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she has invested only $5,000 in two very nice pictures that she thinks will bring somewhere between $15 and $20 million ... and I think she could be right.”

Jim replied enthusiastically, “Holy cow! Well done! My wife’s a brilliant businesswoman, isn’t she?

“You have just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?”

The lawyer replied, “The pictures are of you and your secretary.”
