For the next three days and then on the final day of convention, IP Barry invoked his dream to all present, challenging all Lions to Follow their Dream. To celebrate Barry’s induction as President, all Aussie Lions got out of their seats waving banners, following a pipe band around the convention centre, singing Waltzing Matilda and The Road to Gundagai, while trying to encourage the rest of the world to join in. District Governor Gary Kenny The 201Q2 District Governor’s Bulletin Issue 2 – August 2013 Hello fellow Lions of District 201Q2,

Well, what an honour and a privilege it was to take the oath of office as your District Governor along with 753 other Governors Elect from across the world, from our just installed International President, Australia’s Barry Palmer, in Hamburg on 9th July.

IP Barry certainly impressed the Lions of the world when initially he shared with us a dream sequence supported by Manny, an indigenous performer from Kuranda, emerging from a smoke filled stage expertly playing a didgeridoo and traditional dance. And of course they being Lions, all countries were very gracious

of Australia having their turn with a President.

IP Barry is setting a hectic pace, determined to advance our Association this year and Presidents should look out for plenty of information coming their way.

It was great to see 13 Lions representing Q2 and there is no doubt all had a great time enjoying Hamburg’s attractions as well as the Convention. We had some 60 Lions from the four Q Districts in Hamburg so I organized an enjoyable “Q” night out with about 40 attending.

My Theme for 2013/14 is:

Lions, Bringing Dreams to Life

My Aims for the year are as follows:

• A Club Growth Challenge of plus one net

member increase

• A focus on Retention

• To promote female membership and

Branch Clubs of young people

• Improve club atmosphere & with

it, member satisfaction

• Value contribution & recognize

achievements

• Enjoy each others company and have fun

• And Bring someone’s Dreams to Life in

your local community

Audrey and I will have commenced Club Visits before the end of July – I will be in contact with Clubs soon to agree dates.

See you all soon,

Gary Kenny

Barry J. Palmer

International President

Barry J. Palmer, of Berowra, NSW, Australia was

elected to serve as International President of

Lions Clubs International at the association’s

96th International Convention, held in Hamburg,

Germany, July 5-9, 2013.

President Palmer was a real estate company

director.

A member of the Hornsby Lions Club since 1976,

President Palmer has held many offices within

the association, including club president, zone

chairperson, cabinet secretary, cabinet treasurer

and district governor. He has served on

numerous committees and as the Host

Committee Chairperson for the 2010 Lions Clubs

International Convention in Sydney, Australia.

In recognition of his service to the association,

President Palmer has received many awards,

including the 100% Club President Award, the

100% District Governor Award, six International

President’s Medals and the Ambassador of Good

Will Award, the highest honour the association

bestows upon its members. He is also a

Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

In addition to his Lion activities, President Palmer

is a recipient of the Australian Medal issued by

the Australian Government, the Australian

Childhood Cancer Research Award and the

Spastic Centre of NSW Award. He was a Pioneer

Volunteer at the Sydney Olympics and a member

of the New South Wales Paralympic Committee.

President Palmer and his wife Anne, also a Lion

and a Melvin Jones Fellow, have three children

and eight grandchildren.

Barry’s theme as President of Lions Clubs

International is

“Follow Your Dream”.

Dear Club President,

You know, I became a Lion quite by accident. Back in 1976, I was running a retail business, and I stocked fruitcakes that the Hornsby Lions Club, my local club, was selling in the community. After selling 20 cartons of the cakes, the club decided to honour me with a certificate of appreciation. After the ceremony, Lion Bill Atlas finally asked me to attend the next club meeting. I said, "Bill, why didn't you ever ask me to join?" And he said, "I thought you were too busy."

As Lions, it's our duty to ask community members to join our clubs. How many friends, family members, community and business leaders would say "Yes" if asked to join? There's only one way to find out—just ask! We've got a great new resource to help your club invite new members.

It’s coming up to District Convention time again! The Lions Clubs of Zone 10 (Mackay and Surrounds) welcome one and all for the 2013 Q2 District Convention. This year’s convention promises to be ‘Something for Everyone’. Come to the Ooralea Turf Club on the Peak Downs Highway – not far from Mackay’s City Gates and Nebo Rd (aka Bruce Highway) Motel Strip – to enjoy fellowship with other Lions; training on working with the media; a multicultural feast at Mackay’s South Sea Islander Hut; and the DG’s Banquet (semi formal, please, theme for the night is black, green and gold). The street march returns on Saturday morning, with a formal welcome to Mackay by Mayor Deirdre Comerford. Business matters will be discussed as usual. The keynote speakers are also not to be missed. We again welcome an international guest; this year we host the International First Vice President, Joe Preston. Attendees at the Partners Lunch will be joined by Mrs Preston and the Miss Personality entrants. This year’s Remembrance Ceremony also promises to be something special. Breakfast was supplied over 3 days for 1,000

people plus our own workers. The morning

started with teams arriving at 3.30am to

commence cooking by 3.45 am.

A team of 30 Lions under took the task each

morning.

and toast were cooked and served before 7am.

worked hard and the morning was all about

meeting members from other Clubs and having

fun.

Comment from many Lions " We should do this

more often. The fellowship was worth the early

start."

Club's members.

to see so many Lions working and having fun

News from Zone 1

As a new year starts for Lions, I have been to

several Changeovers and it is good to see new

faces stepping forward to take on the different

roles for each club. Trinity Beach had their

Changeover on the 25th

June. Past President

Shirley had a very successful year getting more

involved within the community and hopes these

projects will continue. The club celebrated their

10 years earlier this year and they all remarked

how the club has progressed from meeting in a

garage to their present venue.

On 1st July Cairns club celebrated their

Changeover with the induction of two new

members. This club has had many interesting

projects. They have the best Lions cake sales

person, David Lowe, and President Des awarded

him a plaque for this outstanding effort.

Edmonton, Gordonvale, Trinity Bay and Barrier

Reef had their changeover on the 6th

July. This

combined Changeover commenced in 2001 by

Maryanne and Peter Crozier. There are some few

new faces on the executive in each club. The

installations were officiated by 2ND

VDGE Kath

Scully and Mayor Bob Manning toasted Lions

International he also met the three exchange

student visiting at the present. Incoming President

Phillip Ungerger presented a Melvin Jones

Fellowship Award to Barry Donnelly on behalf of

the club. Barrier Reef inducted a new member on

the night.

Lioness had their changeover on Sunday 7th

July

with a luncheon, it was a lovely day.

President Robyn reviewed her year including the

35th

birthday celebrations. Lioness have

supported many community groups in various

ways.

Zone 9 Changeover Dinners

Hi all you hard working Lions in District 201Q2. I would like to let you all know how we Lions are going in Zone 9. I have attended all of the Changeovers in this Zone and believe that all of the Incoming Boards of Directors are ready to follow their Dreams and work hard for the First Australian International President Barry Palmer and our 201 Q2 District Governor Gary Kenny.

I wish to thank Past DG Tom Becker for inducting the Board at the Whitsunday Club and Immediate Past DG Doug Winterflood for inducting the Proserpine Club, as well as PDG Barry Brockbank for inducting the Bowen Club’s Board of Directors. I travelled up to Collinsville and inducted the Collinsville Board of Directors.

Jan & I were made very welcome at all the clubs in Zone 9. There were many Lions Awards given for hard working and very humble Lions in all the clubs in this Zone and it is always amazing how many man hours and how much money is raised and given back to the Communities of the Zone and support given to Lions International Projects, all over the world. Thank you lions in Zone 9 for letting me be your Chairperson for 2013/2014

The Big Barn Bash. At approximately 0500 am Tuesday morning on

the 20th

of March 2012 a tornado impacted areas

of Townsville causing significant damage to

residential housing and commercial properties.

One of the commercial properties extensively

damaged on that morning was the business

premises of Lions Don and Dawn Rolfe.

The badly damaged original shed was built in the late 1960’s

Over a year later a celebration was proposed –

“The Big Barn Bash”- the proceeds of the event

to be donated to Angel Flight. The evening

would be to give thanks to suppliers, contractors

and workers who toiled over the past six months

to rebuild the Rolfe Workshop which had been

devastated by the Tornado.

Part of the old shed was relocated at the back of

the block and is being refurbished and upgraded

to current engineering standards, the approximate

floor area will be 1700m2.

The New Shed

The new shed to the front where we had the “big

barn bash” is approximately 3800m2.

Plenty of room in here for a party On the night of the function there were

approximately 120 guests dining on a lovely meal

prepared by Golden Roast and dancing to the

tunes of the Trevor Mitchell band, while Castle

Hill Lions Club members tended the bar.

There were also a number of raffles run at the Big

Barn Bash. Lions Don and Dawn Rolfe very

generously added to the amount raised on the

night rounding it out to a donation of $2.500.00

to Angel Flight.

LINDEMAN ISLAND PROJECT

for Camp Kanga

Lion Garry Davey from Cairns Barrier Reef, Martin Braddick from Tully, Sam Harris from Home Hill, Bill and Pam Harrison & Linda Baxter from Whitsunday Lions Club spent 5 days on Lindeman Island on a Camp Kanga Project.

Together with two Rotarians they shifted about 80 beds and 160 mattresses from the Club Med Resort down to the wharf, where they stacked and covered them ready to go to the mainland on the barge. The fun part was lowering the beds with ropes from the 3rd story down to the ground. Also they stacked 4 pellets of fridges, washing machines and dryers, all to go to Camp Kanga.

Don't talk to my parrot...

Wanda's dishwasher quit working so she called in a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check. Oh, by the way don't worry about my dog Spike. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!"

"I MUST STRESS TO YOU: DO NOT

TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"

When the repairman arrived at Wanda's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking dog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work. The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled,

"Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!" To which the parrot replied.............

"Get him Spike!"

See - Men just don't listen!

CCIA Bike Ride organised in conjunction with the

Mt Stuart Lions Club (The following article appeared in the Townsville

Bulletin on Saturday 27th July)

Riders left town about 7am on Thursday for the 110km [distance covered by one degree of latitude on Earth's surface] leg to Ingham, arriving just after midday.

Bike Ride president, Simon Ormes said participants were yesterday cycling 165km [length of the Suez Canal] to Innisfail before making the final 90km [width of the Bering Strait] trip to Cairns today.

"We've had a good result this year, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be the biggest ride we've had," he said.

"It's great, we've had a lot of camaraderie within the groups."

The ride, in its 15th year, raises money for the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA).

CCIA executive director Michelle Haber said she was thrilled to be playing a part in this year's ride as a support driver.

"During the past 15 years, CCIA has achieved some remarkable things, and we have made strides in achieving our goal of saving the lives of all children with cancer," she said.

"The progress we've made with our research is certainly helped by the significant contribution of the ride."

Since 1999, the ride has raised more than $4.1 million. Visit 2013townsvilletocairnsbikeride.go fundraise.com.au to donate to this year's ride.
