LEFT: Dorothy Donihee reviewing her manuscript, "In My Mother's Footsteps." Dorothy (Tilton) Donihee (1928 - 88), was born in the Smitville (a Cornwall suburb replaced by Domtar"s PaperMachine No. 6, 1958 - 60).

Mrs. Donihee was a pioneer builder of the Catholic Women's League. Revered Gary Ostler said, "When the League wasin its infancy she was instrumental in giving it body and substance...she was the President of the St. Columban'sLeague, the Diocesan president, Ontario President and National President. For her work she received the Papal AwardPro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1956 and had an audience with Pope Paul VI in 1967 when she represented the World'sConference of Women's Organizations in Rome.

A tireless volunteer Mrs. Donihee was involved with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Community Chest (United Way),the MacDonell Memorial Hospital and Cornwall Senior Citizen's Club. She served as director of the Chidren's AidSociety, the Cornwall Housing Authority, the Cornwall Planning Board and Advisory Board of Guaranty Trust.

Mrs. Donihee worked in real estate, but most significantly for the historic record she wrote the book "In My Mother'sFootsteps" posthumously published by the Wood House Museum (copies may still be purchased), about growing-up in

the Cornwall suburb of Smithville and its eventual removal for Paper Machine No. 6.

RIGHT: Teacher and politician Pat (Patterson) Armstrong (1922 - 2005) was known by her fellow Cornwall City Councillorsas Council's "voice of reason." As Cornwall's second female elected official, she served three two year terms from 1977 to1982 with Mayor Gerry Parisien. A teacher at CCVS, Pat was also president of the Cornwall Golf and Country Club, CornwallCurling Club, Cornwall General Hospital Women's Auxiliary, a founding member of the Canadian Federation of UniversityWomen, Chair of the Cornwall Housing Authority, and volunteer for both the Children's Aid and Canadian Cancer Societies.

BELOW: If we lived in the United StatesMary "Granny" (Whitmore) Hoople, (1767 - 1858) would be the subject of numerousfilms and biographies. As it is she lived in the Lost Village of Dickinson's Landing.

The stuff of frontier legends, Mary Whitmore was kidnapped and her younger brother by aDelaware war party during the American Revolution. During her seven years of captivityMary was adopted by a medicine woman and learned the language and traditional nativemedicine, while her brother John disappeared. Facing starvation the Delawares journeyedto British held Fort Detroit to trade 18 year old Mary for food. She was now indentured fora year to a local French-Canadian family where she practiced traditional healing andlearned French. Mary now heard about her mother's brother Jacob Sheets from a LutheranPastor who told her that her Loyalist uncle had settled on the north shore of the St.Lawrence River near the Long Sault Rapids and was trying to obtain information about herlost nieces and nephews. She was released from her indentureship and traveled with thePastor and a group of voyageurs to her mother's family,

Mary arrived in 1788. Known as the "Hungry Year," she showed the Loyalist settlers how to survive eating roots and bulbs. Shealso met Henry Hoople. The couple now married and Mary set about learning her native German and teaching the others about

edible roots and foods and started practicing traditional medicine making her the settlement's only "doctor" until a trained doctor arrived in 1811.

The couple lived on Hoople's Creek where they raised eleven of twelve children. During the Battle of Crysler's Farm, Mary tended to the wounds of an Americansoldier and years later was commended for "her compassion and bravery" by the American government and given a substantial cash reward.

Active all of her life, in 1851 Mary and a son William traveled on business to Toronto and learned about a man kidnapped by the Delaware Indians and adopted byCaptain Servos of the Butler's Rangers. Curious, William visited the man who turned out to be his long lost uncle. He now arranged for John to take a steamshipto meet his sister and now blind 101 year old uncle Jacob Sheets for a family reunion 70 years in the making.

This might be satire! I want tohelp my conservative friends whobelieve the Drummond Report orwho want to have their municipaltaxes cut. I have a very modestproposal to assist you in yourendeavour. The only way you canevoke change and show these fatcats you are serious is to not be ahypocrite. If you do not believe inpublic services paid with taxes, you

should not use them, and it is as simple as that! You need toshow your contempt for the system, and that you stronglybelieve in your convictions. Therefore do you not leave yourgarbage at the curb, bring the garbage to the dump yourself! Also, disconnect your toilet from the municipal sewer system. If a snow plow goes down your street, chase it away with apitch fork and a clenched fist. Do not send your children topublicly funded schools. If you need to go to the hospital, refuse to use your health card, and use your credit cardinstead. Last, but not least, refuse to pay your taxes! Youmight go to jail for this act of civil disobedience, but that isnot an excuse to be a leech on the system. Demand to paythe full bill for your incarceration. If you follow these simplesteps, it will be the greatest revolution since the tea party (orroll up the rim), and it will shake the very foundations of thisgreat country!

My name is Jason Setnyk, and these are my coffeegrinds.

Jason Setnyk is a local high school teacher, journalist, publishedand award winning author, photographer, arts and culture event

p.s. I would like to share a letter to the editor written by Brian Lynchconcerning the Drummond Report. Warning: The following editorial isfactual, analytical, and logical. Therefore it may be offensive to somepeople.

Letter to the Editor on the Drummond Report by Brian Lynch: TheDrummond Report on Ontario’s Public Services with its massivespending cuts to essential public services fails to provide a balancedapproach to eliminate the province’s deficit by 2017-18. It ignores therevenue side of balancing the budget and makes no mention ofcreating a fairer tax system and a job creation strategy to grow theOntario economy. At the present time, both the Ontario Governmentand the Federal Government spend billions of dollars a year on taxbenefits for profitable corporations and the wealthiest one per centwho need help the least. If everyone is to tighten their belts, then theprofitable corporations and the top one per cent should pay their fairshare of taxes.

In Ontario, if the corporate tax giveaways were restored to the 2010level, $8 billion would be available over the next four years for muchneeded public services and programs such as healthcare andeducation, the creation of good jobs, the reduction of poverty, anddeficit reduction. Study after study shows that the billions of dollars incorporate tax cuts to the large, profitable corporations are not creatingnew jobs. The best way to help create good jobs is to provide taxcredits to businesses that create new jobs instead of handing money tocompanies that ship jobs out of the country.

There are also many ways that the McGuinty Government could spendtaxpayers’ money better and smarter. For example, the OntarioGovernment should reduce its reliance on high-priced consultants andplace a cap on public sector CEO salaries. By cutting consultants byhalf, the Ontario Government would save $500 million over the nextfour years and the cap on public sector CEO salaries would save $80million over the same time period. In the healthcare sector, greateremphasis should be placed on investing in frontline care and onkeeping people healthy and greater use should be made of nursepractitioners and midwives.

By taking a balanced approach to balancing the budget, we can builda better, more equal Ontario that puts people first.-Brian Lynch

This One is for The GirlsFriendships are an essential part of life, and some of the best friendships I haveare with women. Yes, like the MartinaMcBride song, “This One is For the Girls.”The ladies and women of all ages that Icount as my friends.

I am still very close to some of my high-school friends and that long-term bond will never sever.

We knew each other through the awkward years and haveshared the laughter and the tears. We are there for each other,no matter what. Sometimes we are guilty of not reaching outas often as we should, but when one needs the other, we willtalk as long as it takes, vent, celebrate the good news andtriumphs, and laugh until our face hurts. Friendships can beginat any age. I also have formed some very close friendships inrecent years and they are equally important to me. These ladiesare supportive, nurturing, funny and absolute gems.

I recently enjoyed a lovely dinner with three other women. Weare all at different stages and yet we found a way to connectand share in each other’s lives. We celebrate theaccomplishments, discuss future opportunities and really

converse about life and the journey. It started by casual conversation of‘let’s go out to dinner sometime’ and then we set a date and made ithappen. I need to arrange more of these outings. I left the restaurantfeeling wonderful about the night and revelled in the discussions withthese strong and smart ladies. These wise women have helped me seethat I am on the right path.

I also enjoyed “Girls’ Day” last weekend with one of my best friends. Werelished a leisurely lunch at The Grind with copious amounts of coffeeand then followed up with an afternoon of laughs, serious moments, shared concerns, discussions of aspirations and ended it with plans tohave a getaway soon. I really needed that. We were a little silly at times, but it was fun.

Recently I had a beautiful symbolic dream which I mentioned to some ofmy closest friends. Within 20 minutes I had a full interpretation of thedream plus their own ideas of the meaning. That is friendship! We noticethe little things and revel in the mutual ideas and thoughts. Fromsuggesting makeup tips, to clothing recommendations, sharing recipesand relationship and child rearing tips; these friendships are essential. We send jokes, quotes, make suggestions, talk about movies, tv showsand music we like. From a simple message or an outing, these littleconnections nourish the soul. We compliment each other, and dole outadvice. We are the sounding board, the voice of reason and the rowdypartners-in-crime. We bring out the best and remind each other that nomatter what size, how many wrinkles or grey hairs or what our status is;we are beautiful.

Friends can be the mirror to reflect upon. They will give their opinions, support your decisions (even if they don’t agree), be there when thepieces fall apart, when you lose a job or promotion you really want, when a marriage or relationship ends, when a parent is ill, suffer a deathof a loved one, and battle illness. They have discussions about childrenand everything in between; these are just some examples when thesefemale ties are so important.

True some female relationships are rocked by jealousy, catty behaviour, backstabbing and vicious comments, but if you find those real truefriends, they are the solid ground in the middle of an earthquake.

Yes I have some wonderful male friends who I admire as much as myfemale friends, but the relationships and the dynamics are different. Agood balance is to find some truly trustworthy male and female friends.Like Oprah Winfrey said: “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when thelimo breaks down.” I know who mine are, and I cherish every last one ofthem.

OUT OF FLOWYes, most of us can admit we allow ourselves to get out offlow on occasion. What is out of FLOW you ask? I amreferring to triggers; situations or conversations that takeplace that involve us, or maybe we make them about us.Sometimes we go into denial and play the blame game, pointing our finger at anyone but ourselves. Thesereactions or behaviors cause us to be in direct conflictwith…you guessed it…YOU, and this is when we getout of flow.

Triggers cause us to experience fear, anger or hurt, all connected and all play avery important role when we are out of flow.

Take a few minutes and think about the last time something triggered you. What emotion did you feel? Did the initial emotion cause you to feel otheremotions?

When we are out of flow, we need to ask ourselves two very importantquestions, is this “the Truth “or is this “a story”. If we can determine quicklywhich place we are in, we will be in a better position to get back into the FLOW.

What is a story? A story is simply what we have created in our mind, it may bebased on our past or it may be a new story we create. This story takes over ourrational thinking and we spin out of flow that is if we do not catch ourselvesdoing this.

Let me give you an example of me being out of flow, in order to assist you whenyou see yourself heading in this direction. This example is somewhat fabricatedto assist you with your story and truth.

I come home from grocery shopping, which I did by myself, some of the items Ireally wanted were not available, so I drove around to get these items, I wasfeeling frustrated that I had to go by myself and get the groceries, not tomention having to go to more than one store, and on top of all this, I over spent. When I arrived home, arms full of shopping bags, I struggle to open the door, when I finally get the door open, my son (he is the example) is stretched out on

the coach watching TV.

Are you getting where I am going? Yes, OUT OF FLOW, I was already allowing myself tobe out of flow as I did my shopping, the story was playing in my head. So whathappens next? I make my son very much aware of all I went through to bring homegroceries, and then I continue the story, by pointing out the dirty dishes and the sockson the floor. That’s” the story”!

Now what is “the truth”? Did I ask my son to come with me grocery shopping? NO, didI ask him to make sure to pick up the dishes and socks before I got home fromgroceries? NO, did he create the chain of events while shopping? NO.

So, before we start to go out of flow, it is important to step back and ask ourselves isthis a story or truth? The more we practice this the better we will get at catchingourselves hopefully before we get out of flow, but if nothing else, it will assist us to getback into flow quicker and see the signs for the next events that may trigger us.

Until next time, when you are in flow, you are in control of yourself and the situation.

Once in a while I will meet people and theysay “Hey Sylvie, you are still maintaining your weight?. This makesme realize that people think that one day I will go back to my oldunhealthy habits. I tell them that I have made a lifetimecommitment to myself and my family to maintain this healthylifestyle and try to help others change their ways as well…I am notever going back to the way I was…sick and uncomfortable in myskin…I have come too far, for too long to ever go back. This is who Iam, I feel great, happy and I finally like “ME” for all that I am. Thanksto the amazing encouragement of my husband, son, family andfriends, I was able to make this goal become reality.

One thing that was very important during my journey to a better lifewas to get rid of all the negativity in my life. When I was at my worstshape ever, I was going to the casino regularly, drinking 5double/doubles each day, drinking wine and coolers etc…. I amliving proof that you can turn your life around and show everyonethat matters to you that you can and will do it. Nothing like reachingyour goal, feeling great about yourself and really showing peoplethat you are serious about living your best life ever!!

I’m often asked; “Isn’t a weight loss program expensive?. I alwaysreply ;“This was my last chance to change my life, once the poundsstarted melting away ,there was no turning back for me..”.….for meit was cheaper to invest in this program than to end up takingmedication the rest of my life, being un-fit, feeling sick all the time, missing work, becoming dependent on the health care system, notbeing able to enjoy life with my family to the fullest etc…..there is

no price for happiness. It is honestly the best thing that I ever did for myself,I had tried every other diet without success….

I highly recommend the “Revolution Weight Loss Clinic”. The staff isawesome, you receive regular educational newsletters (learn about healthfrom the inside/out), health seminars, support, daycare service etc. You caneven invest in your own qualified physical trainer…everything that you needis there, you just have to make the first step.

I wish to thank Jason and Jennifer Christoff that have always made me feelvery special and comfortable at their club. They placed a lot of confidence inmy success, giving me the opportunity to do a few radio commercials fortheir program as well as take part in their “Revolution Movie”. They werealways there to boost my confidence along the way. Thanks to them, I foundenough confidence to take my weight loss success a step further….I nowgive healthy eating cooking seminars , part 1 (cellulite reducing and weightmaintenance recipes) and part 2 (snacks, main meals and desserts). I makehomemade natural/organic goods and I am presently working on perfectinga few gluten-free items as well….all very exciting things happening andcoming my way and I am so ready for it…

If you want to change your life and learn how to prepare natural/organicrecipes come to one of my seminars, you will not regret it. For moreinformation call Sylvie at 613-931-3119 or email me [email protected] . Please visit my official website atwww.thehealthnut.ca

*My next part 1 cooking seminar will be on Saturday March 10th from 1to 4 pm. Spots fill up quickly, book yours as soon as possible….

COME AND SAY “HI” ON SUNDAY MARCH 4TH, AT THE “I AMWOMAN CONFERENCE/ TRADE SHOW”, it will be an awesome day tocelebrate women…I will be demonstrating a few healthy recipes that youwill be able to taste test. I will have samples of my homemade goods therefor you to sample as well…maybe even a few gluten free surprises…

In health….Sylvie Thibert

Naturally Delicious ... with the Health Nut I Choose To Be That!

I know two people. One person has beenseparated a year from her husband. Every timeyou talk to her, she is complaining about howhe left her, how she has to work now, and howhe’ll never get the kids. She is the “classic”victim; everything was his fault. She takes noresponsibility in her marriage falling apart. This woman is always gossiping about

something or someone, and hardly has a smile on her face. Theother woman I know went through the same situation, yet she is thecomplete opposite. She always has a smile on her face and alwayssomething nice to say. She regrets the mistakes that both her and herhusband have made in the past and is working on “bettering herself”.She accepts responsibility for her marriage falling apart and islooking at the future as a new adventure for herself. Looking at bothsituations, where do you belong? We can all play the “victim” in life;everyone has gone through difficult times. We can blame others forour situations and our lives. But the reality is, we all have a choice. Wehave the choice to react to every situation either negatively orpositively. We can choose to laugh or cry, get angry or get over it. Noone can make you feel anything without your permission! Sosomeone doesn’t make you angry; you choose to get angry. Just like,no one can make you happy. You must choose to be happy.

Yoga teaches us how to be real with ourselves and to look within ourselves. You can’t play the “victim” on the yoga mat, it is no one else’s fault that youcan’t do downward dog. When we come to the mat, we really see ourselves;our strengths and our weaknesses. And yoga shows us how to movebeyond and get stronger. We can change; we just must be willing to do so.Yoga teaches us that with consistency and compassion, we can transformour lives. Practicing yoga on a daily basis brings genuine happiness and loveto your heart because you are taking care of yourself both physically, mentally and spiritually! So “choose to be that” person and spread someyogalove!

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS Rule No. 1 – There are noRules. (Just really goodadvice!)Rule number one is more than just words - it should be your mantra.

If you have ever taken any classes on anysubject or watched a talk show on

television, you know that each person whosays they are an expert on a subject will gladly tell you that youshould do it this way, or that way and that is the only way because– they truly believe that if it works for them, it will work for you.

If you have taken a class on the same subject by two or moreinstructors you know that they will rarely agree on any of the moresubjective topics and often do not agree on some of the basics.

It’s all so confusing. Who is right and who is wrong?

The truth is that they are all right, because it is a method that worksfor them. The problem arises when what works for them doesn’twork for you.

So now what do you do. You take comfort from rule number one. There are no rules, just really good advice. How does this apply toyou the Artist? There will be hundreds of Artists who will stick to arepertoire of do’s and don’ts to do with the application of their Art.They will insist that you must perform a variety of rituals in orderfor your work to improve or even measure up and you just can’tseem to get the method down. You become so frustrated that youmay lose your confidence or even your drive to make your art.

Then there are another set who will insist that everything that thefirst group says is wrong and that they alone know the truth. Their way is theonly way to go. The problem is that you can’t get yourself around thatmethod either, now what.

There may even be a third set that embrace some of the first group andsome of the second group’s philosophy of how to Master the process.

The problem isn’t that any of them are right or wrong it’s just that when wedecide in absolutes around anything then the creative process starts tostagnate or sometimes even stop flowing. This may have happened to you.

I remember one day my daughter came home from third grade all tearyeyed and depressed because some well-meaning art teacher had told herthat the sky had to be blue, and not purple (the colour she had decided touse). I had told her many times when we were painting together that whenshe painted, she could make things in her painting any colour that shewanted to, after all it was her painting. Now the visiting Art teacher wastelling her that the sky must be blue, and not purple, or green or any othercolour.

I wiped away her tears and told her that we should be glad that we have thefreedom in this world to take or leave this nice lady’s advice and paint thesky any colour we like. How many of you out there have had theunfortunate experience of wanting to paint the sky green and were told itshould be blue.

If we start to look at the overall process and take a little of this and a bit ofthat, we will start to discover the way that works best for us. Until we lookat all the knowledge that is presented to us as simply advice for the takingwe will never unlock our true potential.

Allow yourself to look at workshops and painting classes as a wonderfulbuffet of ideas and challenges. Take a little from this method and some ofthis idea mash it all up in your right brain and see what your Universaltranslator of creativity comes up with.

..........Shine On. I’ve always been the kind of person to alwaysthink the best in people and I’ve always

trusted and believed that most people are good, unlessproven otherwise. I try not to judge people nor their decisionsbecause most of the time my hands are NOT clean, and I’m certainlyin no position to be judging someone nor their choices.

This past week, I’ve come to the realization that some people – evencomplete strangers – will “throw rock at things that shine.” What Imean is that, out of pure jealousy, spite or envy, some people will tryto bring you down. They will do or say just something to make yousecond guess your judgment or decisions, which can turn your lifeupside down in a split second. (Yeah, it’s not fun and I really don’t wishthis terrible feeling or situation upon anyone!).

My mom has always told me “Vanessa, you can be anything you wantto be, never give up and don’t let anyone stand in your way when youreally want something and always strive to be the best that you canbe. These words of wisdom have stuck with me since I can remember, and the people closest to me know that when I put my mind tosomething there’s nothing that can stand in my way and if you pushme down with words or actions, well, you’ve just fueled my fire evermore.

People will always have something have an opinion whether it’s positive ornegative and it’s important to trust your inner judgments and your gutfeeling, it will always steer you in the right direction. It’s not secret that I’m areally open person but there are definitely times when even I have to beguarded and keep certain things to myself. It’s a harsh lesson, and one I’velearned recently.

Ladies, the point it, don’t let anyone try and turn your world upside downwith cruel words or actions; I know that you are all fabulous and alwaysremember that no one nor women is not perfect. We all have faults but thereis difference between having a moment of weakness and just simply beingmean.

The weak and jealous type will always try and bring you down, becauseyou’re FABULOUS where it counts the most... inside.

Keeping shining YOUR light and if people throw rocks, don’t dodge them, acknowledge them and move on, life is just to short to waist your energy andtime on people who try and bring you down.

Stay fabulous,V.

Dear Joe,I have af i b e r g l a s sshower stallin myba s emen tbathroom.My houseisn’t all that

old but the drywall around the shower is mouldy andcrumbling. Why is this happening, what do I need to do to fix itand how can I prevent this from happening again? We havepretty well stopped using this shower so it doesn’t get anyworse. But when we have guests we would like to have abathroom for them to use that I am not so ashamed of.Thank you for your advice, love your column.

Dear anonymous, You are not alone in your battle againstmouldy bathroom drywall. Especially around tubs and showers.

The root of the problem is this: Contractors who don’t care enough to dothings right the first time. It comes down to dollars and sense. If acontractor can save a buck and it lasts long enough that the owner can’tcome back with a warranty claim then he’s done his job.

Problem is after a two or three years things start to fall apart and thehomeowner is left to foot the bill for repairs or live in a house that’s fallingapart. This shouldn’t have to happen. But I digress;

The reason this is happening is water or moisture has broken theprotective layer of paint, which in an installation like this is all thatseparates the drywall from the water. Once the moisture is in it is a matterof days before the drywall is soaking it up like a sponge and it loses allintegrity, this moist environment is the perfect breeding ground formould which, as it grows, further deteriorates the crumbling mess. Theonly remedy is replacement. We must cut out all the offending material, like a cancer, so it cannot continue to deteriorate, and we havesomething sound to build upon. The area behind will have to be allowedto dry if it is significantly damp or else mould will continue to flourish.Once we have the area clean and dry, we can replace the drywall and fixthe wall. But we cannot replace it with just regular drywall. We have toinstall something that will be impervious to water in the future so thatit doesn’t happen again, perhaps the way it should have been done in thefirst place. At very least we need to install a moisture resistant drywall, which incidentally should be installed everywhere in the bathroom, though it almost never is in new construction .that’s right, because of cost. That being said we cannot leave drywall, evenmoisture resistant drywall, exposed to water in thebathroom with only a layer of paint to protect it. Itwill need an impervious layer installed over it, sowhether that’s panelling or waterproofingmembrane over which to tile, the drywall will neverbe in contact with water again. And that’s the onlyway you will prevent this from recurring. Hopefullyyour condition hasn’t advanced too far and it is assimply as replacing some sheetrock .

While you’re doing it make sure you do the entire aresurrounding the shower: all around the top up to theceiling and down the walls along both sides of thefront. This way you will be sure you have a watertight installation that you will not need to revisit in acouple years.

Thanks for the great question, Joe

“About The House”

St. Lawrence Secondary SchoolStudents Host Art Showcase atCornwall Public LibraryStudents from the grades 10-11 art classes at St.Lawrence Secondary School (SLSS) have beenshowcasing their talents by hosting a public artdisplay at the Cornwall Public Library.

From January 25 – February 29, student art fromlast semester is being showcased at the entrance ofthe library.

Art teacher Gisele Paquette said she wanted to findan additional venue to display student work. This isthe first year that SLSS student art has beenshowcased at the library, and Paquette looksforward to more opportunities in the future.

“Now we can use the area on a more regular basis,”she said. Art displayed includes transformation

portraits, glasswork, paintings, and drawings, as well as an “out-of-the-box” transformation project, where students were given the challenge to morph a simple box into something else.

“We focused a lot on art history,” Paquette said. Grade 11 student Melissa McHarg said she’s actuallybeen recognized on the street for her artwork at the library. “I did get stopped on the street,” she said.“Someone said they liked my art.” The person recognized McHarg because of a digital portrait thatwas displayed. “Most of my art involves throwing a canvas on the floor, and then throwing paint at it,”she said. “If people like my art, that’s pretty cool.”

Grade 11 student Yun Joung said she’s never had a chance to showcase her art in such a large publicspace before. “It’s a great opportunity for me,” she said. “Every piece I have has a theme. I hopepeople who see our art understand the theme that we were trying to portray.”

by Julia LucioCarrots, potatoes, apples, eggs -- whateverneeds peeling, I despise. Yes, I'm one of thesepeople who would stoop so low as to servingmy family synthetic boxed mashed potatoesjust to save myself the trouble of peeling. Sowhen Safe TV Shop promised me to neverhave to peel an egg again, I was in. However, the Eggies are not at all what they arecracked up to be.

Although it's a novel concept, it's not as simple as the ad, or the box, makes it look. Each Eggie comes in four parts that you have to puttogether. That alone takes more time than peeling an egg would!Once assembled, you have to oil the Eggie, (no, you can't usecooking spray!) then crack your egg in it and boil it in water as youwould do a regular egg. Simple, right?

Wrong. What they do not tell you is that the threads on the plasticparts do not fit right making the top and bottom parts hard to screwtogether. When cooking, the cups do not float in a leveled position,so your nicely shaped egg, with the yolk in the middle, perfect tomake your devilled eggs, is not so nicely shaped anymore. Some, ifnot most, of your egg white will seep through and leak into theboiling water, leaving you with a useless clump of a yolk. Cleaning is

SEEKERS FINDS or FLOPS excessively difficult and requires a lot of scrubbing. Furthermore, the egg

does not cook evenly, gets a funny rubbery texture and a plastic taste thatreally isn't enjoyable. All in all, not worth the money in our opinion. Great idea, but seriouslyneeds to be reworked.

If you want to give them a try, Eggies are available for $8.97 atGiant Tiger. Don't forget to let us know what YOU think! email us at: [email protected]

Akwesasne - February 18, 2012 -The Akwesasne Warriors came back from a 3-1 deficitagainst Brooklyn going into the third period and won the game 4-3. The former New JerseyDevil and current FHL league leading scorer Pierre Dagenais had an assist on each of theWarriors first two goals. Dagenais scored the tying goal at 11:50 of the third period. JeanRene Forget gave the Warriors the lead and scored what would turn out to be the gamewinner with 4:03 left in regulation. The 225 people in attendance were ecstatic to watchthis exciting come-back win!

Alexandre Vincent played his first ever game as a Warrior and got the win making awhopping 47 saves. Vincent, who was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 4th roundof the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, has experience playing in the QMJHL and the CHL. Brooklynout-shot Akwesasne 50 to 43, and the Warriors defense seemed to be standing around theentire game. Despite that, Vincent kept the Warriors in the game, and he made the come-back possible.

In other hockey action last Friday, The Jr. A Cornwall Colts beat Kemptville 10-1 and Tylor Spink scored the hat trick including a pair of power-play goals, and he also had an assist. Roman Ammirato also had a pair of power play goals and an assist. Lukas Hafner stopped 14 of 15 shots for the win. Kemptville'sonly goal was by Kurt Gowdy on the power play.

Faiths Find Common Cause in Environmental Concerns So, what do the Messiah, the Day of Judgment and theenvironment have in common?

Well, it seems that a Jewish contemporary of Jesus advised: “If you are planting a tree andyou hear that Messiah has come, finish planting the tree, then go and inquire.” Then, some600 years later, Muhammad reportedly said: “If the Day of Judgment erupts while you areplanting a new tree, go ahead and plant it.”These were just two of the “pearls” of wisdom shared by participants at the Greening SacredSpaces event held in the beautiful library space at Cornwall’s Central Public School lastSunday.Organized by Transition Cornwall+, the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership and the nationalGreening Sacred Spaces initiative, the event attracted close to 50 people to explore thequestion: What does it mean to care for the earth within the context of our spiritual beliefs.”This discussion was facilitated by Kathryn Guindon, Greening Sacred Space’s programofficer for Eastern Ontario.

She guided participants through four themes in either plenary session or small groupworkshops:

· Is climate change a moral issue? · Is there a part of the natural world that you feel strongly connected to?· How does your concern for nature interact with your faith?” · How 'green' is your faith community right now?”Guindon said that she was very impressed by the turnout in Cornwall, which was larger than what she usually receives in Ottawa.John Towndrow, one of the event organizers, said he found the cooperation and collaboration between the three organizing groups “very rich” and wasstruck by the age and religious diversity of those attending (Hindu, Christian, Muslim and Bahá’í), particularly many Muslim youth and children. He has subsequently learned that one of his friends who could not attend Sunday’s event has set up a meeting with her pastor ”to talk about establishing aGreen Team” at her church, which was precisely one of the event’s objectives.Contacts: Transition Cornwall+: John Towndrow (613-938-8459) Cornwall Interfaith Partnership: Barbara Helms (613-938-5410)Greening Sacred Spaces: Kathryn Guindon [email protected]

Travelling with Carson toMelbourne, Australia Melbourne in August is cool. You must rememberthat this is the winter season down under. Youmake sure you bring a good warm sweater andgloves, scarf, and windbreaker or some such coatto ward off the damp cold climate. Coming fromthis country you will notice the change in theweather. Its good to have some warm night wearlike flannel PJ’s for the bedrooms can be cold.

There’s no heat in the rooms and they are not insulated, and mostwindows have only single pane glass. The temperature in the eveningcan drop to a chilly 37 degrees or 2 or 1 C. You can get an electric heaterfor your room, and it does throw off some heat, but it isn’t centralheating.

Melbourne was made for tourists. It’s laid out in squares, and so is veryeasy to wander around even though there is a river that cuts by thedowntown part of the city. I believe it is the Yarra river that meanders bythe city. This is a place to relax and play on its broad grassy banks.

Although in the winter months you might only walk along its banks or relax onthe benches. Melbourne is a centre for the arts, culture, cuisine, rich in galleries, theatres and great restaurants and cafes. If you’re into sports you will not bedisappointed. It has fine facilities in which to enjoy them.

Federation Square is Melbourne’s meeting place across from the Flinders streettrain station, which is the hub of the local train service coming in to the city. Theclocks above the entrance from the street show departure times for trains ondifferent lines.

At the square you can explore Australia’s artistic and cultural history by visitingthree unique galleries and museums. The Ian Potter Centre is dedicated toAustralian art. You can explore the world of film, television and digital culture atACMI--- short for Australian centre for the moving image.

There where many exhibitions such as the ABBAWORLD, plus the No VacancyGallery. The square also offers you a range of cafes, restaurants and bars, andyou can walk through the Atrium with its specialty shopping, high art and popculture. This is also where the Visitors Centre is located and your first stop whenyou come to town. At the centre you can have a walking tour with your ownguide to show you the sights in the city. This is a must, and gives youunderstanding of when, where, why and how to see and do and play in the cityof Melbourne.

There is so much to do and see in Melbourne. If you like to shop, the arcades arethe place to be, for the restored interiors housing boutiques in which the varietyand quality of merchandise is unequalled. The market on Saturday is fascinating. You can walk about for hours looking at stalls and making purchases fromvarious items. When you are tired go to the free bus stop. You look for the circlewith a red slash and written on it – “tourist shuttle”. This bus travels around thecity stopping at various interesting places. You can visit the Docklands, whereyou can watch sports, shop and enjoy a stop at one of the cafes or restaurants. If you want a more restful place, ride the bus to the Royal Botanic Gardens. It isstill beautiful at this time of year. Remember it is still winter in Australia. You cango to Chinatown and taste a smorgasboard of Asian cuisines. The evening youcan go to the theatre, such as Her Majesty’s Princess and Comedy Theatres. Theyare a treat to see for the stunning architecture and colour when you enter. Dostop at Lygon St. for a taste of the Italian cuisine in small cafes. There are so manyplaces to see. The last one, which I liked, was South bank and Yarra River stop. Here you had the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as theglitz and glamour of Crown Entertainment Complex where you can dance at anightclub, catch a movie, and eat at a waterside restaurant. Southgate is apopular shopping and restaurant complex on the banks of the Yarra River.

Melbourne is the birthplace of Aussie Rules Football and the “race that stops anation”, the Melbourne Cup. On the lighter side, Melbourne has becomeAustralia’s comedy capital, with an annual festival that draws comedians fromaround the world and if that is not enough, this city is noted for its parks, andgardens.

This is a city, if you are going to Australia, is a “ MUST SEE” if you have to chooseone.

Late spring, summer and early fall are the choice seasons to visit this city, and ifI go again those are the times I will pick. So if you have in mind to go somewherenew –Melbourne, Australia ----is the place for you.

in Carson’s Cupboard

Travelling to far away places may beexciting, but for some it can seemunattainable. With the economy in adownturn and the government poised tocut tens of thousands of jobs, finding themoney to travel is harder than ever. But,with a few simple tips, you can be on yourway.

1. Shift Your Priorities In order to savefor your next vacation, you need to penny

pinch and follow a budget. You might be thinking, “How do I savemoney? I am already stretched to the limit with my paycheque.”Well, you can bring a bagged lunch to work, make your owncoffee from home, and take out a DVD from the library for freeinstead of renting one or going to the cinema. Just by makingthese changes, you can save over $50 a week. Think of it this way:the savings from bringing your own lunch and coffee to workeach day for a year would equal two return flights to Europe withspending money. It is all a matter of priorities.

2. Go With the Deals People ask me all the time, “Where are youplanning to take your next vacation?” Without fail, my response is,“Wherever the deals are.” I want to see the world, one country ata time. My philosophy is to be open to multiple destinations, andbe flexible as to when to go. Good times to find the cheapestflights are usually the last weekend in January, and the first fewweeks after Labour Day. But, be forewarned - sales can happenany time, so be prepared and plan ahead.

3. Research on the Cheap (i.e., Use Your Library) If you do itright, you can plan your trip without spending a lot. Many peoplerush out to a book store like Chapters to pick up some travelbooks. But don’t be foolish. Travel books are pricey and it all addsup, taking a bite out of your savings. The more you spend onbooks, the less money you have for travel, and the longer youhave to wait to go.In fact, researching your trip can even be a little staycation if you

visit the libraries in your area. Your local library has areas dedicated to travelbooks, magazines, and even DVDs on many destinations. The UnitedCounties of SD&G (www.sdglibrary.ca) has 18 branches spread out in thecounties, and Cornwall (www.library.cornwall.on.ca) has an amazing facilityon Second Street. If you don’t have a library card, you can sign up for onefree of charge, depending on where you live. All of the libraries have publiccomputers with high speed internet. You can use the computers for initialresearch, and when you have narrowed the field down, you can take outresources on your chosen destinations. The library clerks are an incredibleresource on their own, and if they don’t have what you are looking for, theycan order it from another library or put in a request for purchase.Libraries offer lots of programs, so your kids will often be occupied whileyou do your research. March break in particular is a great time to head toyour local library. So, sign up for a card and not only will you save by notpurchasing expensive travel books, but you can also take out newlyreleased DVDs, magazines, and use the internet for free. Savings add upand you will be travelling to your chosen destination in no time.

4. Harness the Internet Besides the library, I like to search for tripinformation and travel deals on the internet. I check these websitesregularly for good deals: www.flightcentre.ca www.airtransat.cawww.klm.com and www.tripcentral.ca

Then, I will Google the destinations online. If you have selected adestination, try looking at the official website of that county’s main airportfor a wealth of information. You can also look at their airlines, as sometimesit is cheaper to fly to other countries on their planes than on our Canadianairlines.

These are just a few of the websites I use. There are tons of travel sites outthere, but you should be cautious if the deal seems too good to be true.Sometimes, it’s worth it to get travel insurance.

But, doing your research, partaking in some local freebies, and having amini-break at your local library, all for free is...priceless. And you will be onyour way to a great vacation sooner than you think.
